In my opinion: Players who want to enter the draft out of high school or are 18yo have to ‘try out’ and a committee consisting of NBA GMs, coaches, and a few players and scouts vote to make a decision.
Last time HS players were allowed into the NBA we had some horrific players. Don’t want to ruin these kids lives by letting them enter and lose college eligibility and have to do some strange path to make money.
I think a lot of the top HS players know they would be one-and-done and into the lottery.
If they get picked in the lottery, they will make millions. Not necessarily to set them up for life, especially if they squander what should at minimum be around $5 million over a rookie contract. But they should be able to go to college if their career crashes out after their rookie deal.
Now it's up to finding agents and scouts who will give them a realistic assessment of their prospects.
Or maybe say if a HS player doesn't get drafted in the lottery, they're allowed to back out and take an NCAA scholarship, assuming they were offered one. Not sure NCAA would cooperate but these should still be stars capable of making college programs good while they play for them.
