There may be an attractive piece who’s bought out.

I'm pretty sure they're not going to use the DPE right now, for this very reason. They want to have the option to get a difference-maker around the trade deadline / buyout period, should that opportunity arise. I don't think they'll use it for a cheap, $2-3M/year guy. (That's "if" they use it at all, of course.)

I think they're going to be challenged on roster spots this year, and may ultimately have to move or waive Smailagic or Lee in order to create a spot later in the year.

Or have they signed enough players that they really don't need to add more?

I will be highly annoyed if these guys go to other teams and get key minutes.

Batum isn't even available yet.
Who knows what is going on with GR3. Maybe they offered him a cheap contract and he turned them down.

They may want to try and fit either into a vet min. Which would mean allowing them to find better deals first, before them excepting a min deal.

They still have about $3.4M left of the MLE (not counting luxury tax penalties, which basically are something like 4x the actual amount), but if they want one of them, they can offer more than the minimum. All depends on how much contribution / value they expect them to make.

Adding a minimum contract at this point will put them into a 575% tax bracket. So it will effectively cost $11M.

Ouch. I hadn't looked at the specific number recently, but..... ouch.

I'm wondering if they basically set an upper limit, went to GR3 and said "will you take it", got a "no", and then moved on to Bazemore.....

I'm not sure where you get those numbers or what you mean by 575%. A minimum contract, no matter how many years the player has, is counted at the 2 year level for team salary. The league pays the rest (to prevent teams from dumping older players and signing cheaper min salaries.) That means the cost will be about $1.6M which, by my reckoning, translates to about $7.6M in tax, not cheap but better than 11.

There's a scaled tax bracket for every 5M over the luxury tax. They are right up against the the 5.75x threshold right now and would go over that threshold with another minimum.

According to the scale, which is the same as last year, assuming their team salary at the moment is about $166M they are about $34M over the tax line. As I read it they are up against the $5.25 line, which would means an additional $1.6M would cost $1M at $4.75=$4.75M, and $600k at $5.25=$3.1M. Anyway, I don't think we can estimate now what the team salary will be at the end of the year - they calculate it on the last day of the season.

I have them at $172M hence your discrepancy.

Hmm, OK. That's the problem trying to figure out what the cost will be, since the team salary will change a lot over the next 6 months.

Teams can offer GR3 more money but will they?

If he only gets minimum deals, he may prefer a contender like the Lakers.

I'd be happy if we offered him more money with our remaining MLE and he returned to the Bay. Then again, I'm not the one that has to pay the tax on that. But if he can shoot 40% from deep again like he did for us before, we could definitely use that kind of wing depth.

Hornets officially waived Batum. If Warriors can’t get GR3 then maybe Batum is the next best option.

They said 5 other teams are after him, including the Nets and Clippers so Batum is getting his money and may prefer a minimum deal to ring chase.

Also as a Euro, he may prefer to be on the East Coast.

Wonder if he would prioritize playing time, since he'll be playing for his next contract.

This is a case where the money REALLY doesn't matter since he's getting paid. I would think he'd want to play in a system and for a team that can maximize his skills and impact which the Warriors would fit. But of course PT is a factor too.

This is one of those cases where the Warriors good reputation for the front office/coaching/and locker room could pay off.
