Warriors part ways with PA announcer Matthew Hurwitz

Post#1 » by cdubbz » Wed Aug 1, 2018 12:36 am

Per SF Chronicke. Loved this guy. Thought he was one of the best PA announcers in the league. Read it was mutual and team is going in a different direction. Great voice and going to be difficult to get used to a new guy announcing

If you read Hurwitz's account, it doesn't sound mutual. I think it's a 'soft firing' -- you didn't do anything wrong, but we're going in a different direction. I don't get it. Continuity is something that modern sports struggles with more, things like familiar sportscasters, PA announcers give some semblance of continuity. Oh well. The Warriors will probably will switch to someone with a much more flamboyant style.

E40 is the only logical option

I would pay large amounts of cash to have E40 Fonzarelli as our PA announcer. THAT would be solid gold. Mayne.

First law of thermodynamics: As I get older, PA announcers only get worse. The next one will probably shout D FENCE again and again like that terrible Mavs announcer.

Oh, I imagine you'd HATE having E40 as our announcer. I'd get over your discomfort quickly and love it

What is a new direction you can take when hiring new PA announcer? Somebody with more hype and pizzazz?

This nothing but a salary cut. Why pay someone 6 figures when you can probably pay them high 5 figures.

Maybe a female PA announcer? The SF Giants are the trailblazers in baseball with the first female PA announcer (Sherry Davis from 93-99) and Renel Brooks-Moon (2000-present). The Dubs wouldn't be the trailblazer in the NBA (I believe Sacramento is) but female PA announcers are still very rare and long under-represented.

Hurwitz was awesome and I think I saw an interview with him at SFSU saying he wanted to be with the Warriors for the next few years (as he specifically mentioned the move to SF). Really sad to see him go, he knew when to hype the crowd and when to keep it lowkey. I also doubt this was a money move, I dont think you earn crazy money doing that job, since he also worked with loads of Colleges around the Bay Area over the years (aside from working with the Dubs). Just doesnt make much sense, replacing people that dont need to be replaced?

Fitz could use a little "soft firing"...

Although honestly, since hearing of Fitz's wife passing away, my heart isn't into hating him like it used to be. That's a heartbreaking situation I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Fitz is a blatant "homer", but after hearing about losing his wife and now raising 3 kids, I would absolutely NOT want him to lose his job.

I can tolerate Fitz during the game broadcast but he’s a complete jackass on KNBR.
