Burks, GRIII, Chriss and WCS are all on effectively 1-year deals with UFA status and no Bird rights. To sign them again either means that they're still willing to take vet min money - so they're in low demand around the league and shouldn't be more then 3rd string - or by using MLE money, limiting what can be spend on others.

Evans and Poole are cheap, young, and currently bad. I wouldn't mind keeping one but having two 3rd string SG options seems like unwanted roster clutter.

IMO the team needs to add four significant players (and get the core guys healthy) to be in a good place next season. One high-quality SF (the toughest option to find), an extra rotation wing, a reserve combo guard, and a center to start or spit time with Looney. Add those 4 to the 8 listed above and it's 12 spots. Perhaps a 13th to Poole or Evans. Then two spots for a some combination of a min salary vet, a 2nd round pick, or open roster spot for midseason addition.

The thing as with last year's team is that when you have 2 more more max or super max players, your roster is going to be top-heavy, rely on 3 or 4 all-stars and fill the rest with minimum players.

KD is gone but Klay got his super Max and Draymond got a big raise and for now, they have DLo. Even if they move DLo, they have an additional 20-29 million committed.

So which significant players are you going to add and at what level? MLE $5 million players? $10 million?

Lacob might have been willing to pay luxury taxes if KD stayed, because they would have been favorites to keep winning. But is he going to pay $50, $100 million or more in luxury taxes for this team?

The competing issue is his new stadium. He will have trouble paying for that if this season is more than an interregnum.

I'd guess that one is added with the 'no hard cap' MLE, so around $5M. One or two in the return of a Russell trade. Maybe someone with the TPE, maybe a 1st round pick (unless traded completely away in a deal). So probably Russell's salary plus $5-20M. Which definitely has the Warriors paying a bunch of luxury tax money - really no way around that while having a competitive team at this point.

It does raise the question of how much the team would ignore luxury tax issues vs being at least somewhat budget conscious. One reason why I think the Russell for Covington based deals are good for GS - they fill the hardest spot to fill (starting SF) with a quality player making $11M (or so). If the team does care about the luxury tax bill it gives more room to add other guys without hitting an internal budget limit (wherever that would be set).

People really gotta let this DLo for Covington idea go. Covington's value is even less this year than it was the previous year. He's been underwhelming. Him being the focal point of any trade that involves DLo would be a travesty. The only way I support any trade that involves DLo going to Minny and Covington coming to GS is if there is another team involved and it facilitates a situation where we get a starting center along with Covington. That's it.

IMO center is a relatively minor need. SF is the big problem. And the number of SF options even close to Covington in quality that could plausibly be obtained by GS is very small. The big problem with a DLo for Covington deal is that Minny is unlikely to have any interest.

Minny definitely has interest. The Wolves are a mediocre team. And they will continue being a mediocre team. Will adding DLo take them to the next level? I don't know. But it at least helps to satiate their only important player. They're not a fa destination. They need players to actually want to play there for whatever reason. So trying to team up KAT with DLo is definitely a goal of theirs. The only problem is, they don't have anything on their roster that warrants such a trade.

Like I said, the only way I would consider such a transaction is if there is a three team trade that facilitates a starting center going back to the Warriors. Let's say something like:

GS Out: DLo+2nd Round Picks
Minny: Covington+2020 1st+Dieng
Memphis: Valanciunas+Fillers

Memphis: Dieng+Minny's 2020 1st+GS 2nd Round Picks
Minny: DLo
GS: Covington+Valanciunas

Minny had some interest in the offseason. Meanwhile they're playing Culver and Wiggins more as combo guards then wings, and are looking ahead to a draft that's full of point/combo guards and little else. Meanwhile Russell isn't exactly raising his trade value playing for the worst team in the league. He just doesn't have the huge trade value some fans hope for.

I agree that we're not getting a super star or even an elite player for DLo, but to think that a DLo/Covington trade isn't possible is inaccurate. It definitely is. I'm willing to bet Minny would take such a deal in a heartbeat. The Warriors would not. Again, Covington has been underwhelming this year. The guy is a role player through and through. And he's been a mediocre one this year. Plus, if Minny doesn't want him, it's no issue to the Warriors. DLo is found money for us. Minny is the organization in a situation where they have to make their main star happy.

I'm not against a Dlo trade. I'm against a Dlo trade where we get Covington as the central piece back but this trade you just proposed is actually really good and one that could make sense for all teams involved.

For Memphis, you're getting Dieng back but he's expiring next year so you're essentially trading Valenciunas for a first and a second round pick as Memphis continues to stockpile future assets.

Minny finally gets Dlo. All of their point guards are free agents so first and foremost they're desperate to get point guards. They also kind of have a serious lack in talent behind Towns and Wiggins and Dlo is by far the best player in the deal so that's another positive for them because you know no big time free agent is coming to Minnesota.

They were our main competitors to get Dlo this summer and reports came out recently that they're still interested in him and they are shopping Covington and Teague.

The only issue is I'm not sure they'd be willing to give up their first to get Dlo. I know it isn't the best draft but they'll still probably be in the lottery.

Then for us, you know Dlo for Covington and fillers isn't cutting it. Here you still get Covington but you also get Valenciunas who's a starting caliber center as the two main pieces.

So in that hypothetical trade we're giving up the best player in the deal but we get two solid role players back at position of needs who fit our roster better. Then we'll get some marginal players to make the salaries work but there's no need to expand on it.

The deal breaker in this trade might strangely enough come from Minnesota if they don't want to give up their first round pick. I don't see Memphis trading Valenciunas for two second round picks. They have no reason to do so. They are going to want a first round pick back for Valenciunas.

I would actually be even willing to give up a future 1st to make this trade happen. It would go to Minny, but their 2020 1st has to go to Memphis. Plus, we get to keep our 2020 pick. Either team can have whatever second round picks we have for the foreseeable future.

I'd give up a future second or even multiple seconds but I wouldn't give up a first. Anyways really interesting trade you posted out there. A lot of people post trade ideas but a lot of them aren't that realistic because they only think of what's best for us. They don't consider all the parties involved.

I'd rather keep that first and just start Wiseman (if we get him), Jonas isn't worth a late lotto pick if you are drafting Wiseman IMO.

In my scenario, we're trading a future 1st. There' s no way I'd do this transaction if it involved getting rid of our 2020 1st. If we're getting rid of DLo, then drafting a combo guard like Edwards, if we have the ability to, is what I'd do. Giving up a future 1st, which will most likely be a late first round as usual, is definitely worth a starter like Jonas.

Wait what? Trade says Minny has an outgoing 2020 1rst (13th) and Memphis gets it, but now you say a future first from us in place of that pick? So, do we keep 13 or not?

EDIT: I said 13 beacuse that's where NBA draft has Minny but it could be different, point is Minny lotto pick

In the original scenario I posted, it would be Minny's 2020 1st going out to Memphis. Our second round pick/s going out to either Memphis or Minny. I just replied to another poster who said we might not be sending out enough to facilitate the trade. That's when I said, I would be willing to add a future 1st to Memphis to make the trade happen since they're the team in this deal that really has no incentive to get rid of Valanciunas.

So in this scenario, we get rid of DLo and second round picks. If we have to, we also get rid of a future 1st. The good part, we get to keep our 2020 1st and 17m TPE.

I have proposed a similar trade to your's as well before killmongrel, but I always envisioned it as a two part trade for DLo where we trade him to Minnesota for Covington + pick, then trade the pick or a future to Memphis to use our MLE on Valanciunas. I like your idea even better though, as it means we do not have to use our MLE.

I think we really do need to trade Russell fast. This draft class is full of guards. How many teams who want guards will even want Russell after they get one through the draft.

GR3 is having a career year, with best in points and rebounds.

He's having one of his best years shooting, though he's taking a lot more shot attempts, including from 3, than in his previous years.

Some team will likely offer him more than the minimum because he has defended the best players all season long and has shot well.

Warriors still need more wings but they could do worse than to have a roster spot for GR3 next year. Worst case, they play him at 3 for like 20 minutes which lets Klay stay at 2.

We know there is no 3 out there who could replace KD. But by committee, maybe GR3 and another guy could replace the production of Harris Barnes.

Say Iggy comes back, though he may want more money than the Warriors are willing to pay him next year, Iggy will play at most 10-15 minutes in the regular season.

They could use a guy who's bigger, maybe just enough to play some 4 in the small lineups. Or maybe they can rely on Paschall though he's also undersized and would have to really help rebound.

Replacing Barnes would be the easy part. Replacing 2015 Iggy is far harder. There just aren't many players near his quality that are even sort-of available. Obviously current Iggy is no longer at that level.

answer hasn't changed

Steph
Klay
Dray
Loon
Smiley
Bowman

the rest we should be looking to package and move ASAP, even Paschall who i like but if we include him in a trade we might get something nice back.

These guys plus Criss, Bowman, Evans, Lewis, Spellman
Continuity matters if you want to contend.
Iggy, MLE and TPE will be vets.
Whatever we get for DLo. Young Vet and Pick

1st Rd pick or picks.

WCS, Burks, GR3 will all be traded at the deadline for picks

We only need one of Chriss or Spellman back. They're too similar. Don't forget we still have Draymond, Paschall and Looney too. I like Criss and Spellman personally but they're too redundant and play the same position.

They're already starting to get near DNP's and the team isn't even fully healthy yet. Now imagine next year. There just isn't that many minutes around in a game to go to power forwards/big men.

We need to keep Bowman. Damion Lee has been a surprise but we have to see if his body can hold up. That's the concern with him and what's his role on next year's team?

Burks would be nice to have next year but he almost certainly is going to be out of our price range. GR3 has been exactly what we could ask from him and beyond but at this point it may take the mid level to keep him.
