2021 Standings Prediction Contest

Post#1 » by Chris Porter's Hair » Mon Oct 18, 2021 8:18 pm

Sorry for the delay. I've had a lot going on and had entirely forgotten about it, but was gently reminded by someone recently. I believe I now have the game set up and ready for your entries here:

http://carpediemjuggling.com/dave/warriors/prediction

For those who are new or don't remember, you simply drag and drop to predict the final standings for the Western and/or Eastern conferences. Scoring is determined by checking each team's final position against your prediction, and giving you points for the difference. Consequently, low scores are better; if you got everything perfect, your score would be a zero. Example:

Warriors: predicted 3rd, actually finish 1st => 2 points
Lakers: predicted 1st, actually finish 6th => 5 points
Jazz: predicted 2nd, actually finish 2nd => 0 points
Denver: predicted 4th, actually finish 3rd => 1 point
Clippers: predicted 5th, actually finish 5th => 0 points
Mavs: predicted 6th, actually finish 4th => 2 points
(and assume you got everything else perfect)
This would give you a score of 10. Not too shabby, Hoopstradamus.

If you are a returning player, and can't remember your login, let me know, and I'll try to remember how to reset someone. Please don't get cute and try to find bugs/security problems. You'll probably succeed. I get it. This is a hobby project I threw together quickly. If you find unexpected bugs/problems, you can let me know here. Good luck, all...

My picks are in.

The winning picks are in, I should have stated.

Well, you're correct, since my picks are in.
If I don't have anything funny to say, can I still have a signature?

I forgot to mention - since I got this up so late, I configured it to let us make predictions until one week into the season. So if you didn't see this before now, you have some time. And if you made your predictions on time and learn to hate them, you have a week to fix things.

Giving it a try. Considering how bad I am at predictions, I'm here to make everyone else look good. Every poker game needs one lousy player.

I did this contest once. From what I remember, I ended up around second worst. I think I was at the bottom for a stretch, but then someone’s prediction tanked at the end to push me up a few rungs.
This movie is like the Rocky Horror Picture Show where everyone knows all the lines.

We're underway. As usual, it looks like my script that updates the standings will need some tweaking, so I'll try to get to that sometime soon.

NBA Power Rankings: Bucks, Nets, Suns & Lakers remain in top tier as Warriors creep up with strong first impression
Here are the six tiers that teams can fall into this season.

Rebuilding franchise – Self-explanatory
Tired-of-rebuilding franchise – They’re not trying to keep rebuilding but they’re just not good enough to avoid it.
Play-In Tournament gives them life – Normally, this team would be headed toward Tank-a-palooza, but the Play-In Tournament is keeping them alive.
Playoff hopeful – Too good to be firmly considered a Play-In Tournament team, but not good enough to really make noise in the postseason.
On the brink of contention – A piece away from believing they can win the title.
Contender – Self-explanatory

Tier 2: Brink of Contention...

8. Golden State Warriors (Previously 10th), 3-0, +7.3 net rating
Weekly Slate: Win at Lakers, Win over Clippers, Win at Kings

First-impression from Week 1: A more balanced offense just lifts this team so much. We saw it in the first win over the Lakers, and not so much in Steph Curry’s 45-point outburst in the win over the Clippers. But the potential for this team having weapons to complement Curry exists right now. Jordan Poole’s hype is a little out of control, but we’ve seen him going on brief binges to help steady the offensive ship. Nemanja Bjelica has been a revelation off the bench. It’s not just this team hoping for Steph to go nuclear, even if it is necessary sometimes. Their problem last season was offense, and it looks pretty balanced so far. We’ll see if they can keep that up until Klay Thompson is back.

Author’s Note: The Warriors have been moved up to the Brink of Contention tier on a probationary basis, due to them looking really good against both LA teams this week.

Okay. I *think* I fixed the results. They are accurate for now; let's see if they update each day.

I'm not seeing anything under Open Games, and 2021 is the most recent under Closed Games. I assume this is the correct link?

Yes. It is 2021. It is closed, meaning you can't make your predictions at this time.

I guess I never did figure out how to fix the automatic scoring updates. I'll try to get in there and do one last update so we can see who won.

Out of curiosity, I totaled up my scores.

East - 50
West - 42

I'm sure somebody did better than that. Likely most somebodies.
