Warriors select Guilherme Santos with the 55th pick in 2022 NBA Draft

Post#1 » by GSWFan1994 » Fri Jun 24, 2022 4:48 am

Not sure if we will keep the pick or trade... anyway, here are 2 threads about him on the Draft forum, videos included:

Brief scouting report written by JMan3134 a few days ago

A thread I made about him last year

He just turned 20 years old 2 days ago.

Couldn't join the combine because there were still games going on here (in Brazil).

Wing with great size and wingspan (6'8'', 7'1'' WS), can slash and shoot a bit. Good defensive instincts.

I see some potential there. Hopefully the team can bring him over to get a closer look at the Summer League and/or G-League.

Friendly reminder that Leandro Barbosa is currently part of the Warriors coaching staff. Add 2 plus 2 and you can see the scouting connection there.

Seems like we traded the 51st pick (Tyrese Martin) to Atlanta.

In the NBA.com page there's a link to a tweet by Shams that we traded the 55th to Milwaukee, but when I click on the link there's an empty page: link

Golden State of Mind is reporting that we decided to keep the pick: link

They did not trade this pick, apparently Milwaukee backed out last minute.

Yeah I just noticed the same thing. I was going to post that tweet from Shams.

Looks like draft and stash then. Hopefully he can spend the full year in the G League.

I know essentially nothing about him but I approve. Young international prospect with great measurements who can be stashed – really nothing to complain about here. If he develops nicely or shows out, bring him over. If not, so be it. Prototypical late 2nd if you're not sure you really need another Rookie on the team the next year.

Draft and stash is not the GL, it means leaving him on his current contract.

I had never heard of this guy before he was drafted. I don't think we had room for another player so this makes a ton of sense to try and stash him one more year if possible. I suppose I would have been happy if my two favorites at that point were taken (Bouyea and Alondes), but even they would be 2way at best and we may not even have room for that.

So, overall I love the outside the box approach because he looks pretty good and I saw some crazy metrics that ranked him hilariously high in this draft. Will be fun to see if he ever makes it to the NBA.

I don't see an nba caliber player in those highlights. I think GS was stuck with a pick here that they didn't want.

I wouldn't say "didn't want" but rather "didn't see much value" ... Gui has a good body and can shoot so take the shot.

Hey TB, what's up man. Hope everything's well.

Let me take this opportunity to make a humble write up on Gui for you (& others on this board).

There was/is barely any info on Gui. And I say that by being someone who created a thread on him last year (which you can check in the OP). I strongly advise you to check JMan's thread on him (also in the OP), and most importantly, his blog post which has lots of clips on Gui's strengths and weaknesses.

Gui plays for a somewhat known club here in Brazil, called Minas (as is "Minas Gerais", name of one of the southeast states here). By the videos you can see that there are barely any people watching the games live; that's how it works here, as basketball, despite being a somewhat top 5 popular sport, is miles & miles less popular than soccer. If you can get like, 5k people attending a game, that'd be considered a huge success.

I don't know if the FO/coaching staff will bring him over for Summer League, I believe that's to be decided in the next few days; at the moment I'd say he will not be playing.

By all accounts, Gui seems like a good person and a hard working kid; there's a video of him this week saying he was having his 20th birthday and would love to being drafted as a gift.

Regarding his playing style and potential, just read the threads I put in the OP and most importantly, watch the videos there, I think they are well done and give a good idea on what kind of player he's supposed to be if he reaches his potential.

As much as I am/was pulling for him (for obvious reasons), me and JMan were the only people on the whole board to talk about him. And to tell you the truth, I didn't think he was going to be drafted, I didn't think he was good enough to be a NBA-caliber player.

Still, stranger things have happened. Maybe the Warriors saw something in him that no one did. Maybe the Leandrinho connection & pull was too strong for them to bet on this player. Anyone who follows the NBA knows for a fact that good, serviceable players comes in all shapes and forms. A good environment is a must for them to maximize their life value, and you know we have that here in the org. Let's hope we have hit another one with Gui.

Cheers.

Thanks!

Here's some more news from a link "The Power" posted in the Ryan Rollins thread:

When the Warriors hosted Gui Santos for a workout during their playoff run, Leandro Barbosa posted a picture of the young Brazilian prospect on his Instagram story. The mere mention of Barbosa had Santos smiling from ear to ear his first time meeting Bay Area media members. Santos called Barbosa a mentor more than once, and will continue to learn from him with Barbosa being a player-mentor coach for Steve Kerr's staff.

"I can say he's the biggest idol," Santos said when asked how big Barbosa was for him growing up in Brazil. "Everybody wants to be like him. He's a big idol there."

Santos called it "amazing" to continue to learn from Barbosa and be around him even more. The recently turned 20-year-old forward played with Barbosa for the Brazilian club Minas in the 2019-20 season when Barbosa led the league in scoring at 37 years old. The two quickly formed a big brother, little brother bond with Barbosa taking Santos under his wings.

The draft process can be grueling, both mentally and physically. Santos and countless others have been preparing for this moment for years, and the closer the date to this year's draft became, the more of a job interview everything feels like.

Having Barbosa as someone Santos could turn to was the exact calming presence he needed.

"When I saw him there, I felt more relaxed," Santos said. "If I need something, he's going to help me. So, I know I have somebody here to support me."

Barbosa in his two seasons with the Warriors turned into a fan-favorite in no time. He brought energy to the court and all throughout the building, just as he does now as a coach. When Kerr needed a spark off the bench, he knew he could turn to the trusted veteran. Santos, who stands 6-foot-8, wants to show his versatility once he gets a chance, but he also wants to one day take what made Barbosa so famous.

His lightning-quick first step is legendary in Brazil, The Bay and beyond.

He's called the "Brazilian Blur" for a reason.

"I'm always asking him about his first step," Santos said. "The Brazilian Blur. I'm always asking him about that. 'How did you do it? How did you use your arm like that to cook me easily?'

"He tried to teach me, so now I really want to learn that from him."

The Warriors didn't hide how big of fans they are of Rollins, though he'll have to earn a roster spot. Santos still is under contract with Minas through 2024, so it will be up to Golden State if he stays in Brazil for the time being or comes over stateside.

Either way, from the veterans on the roster to two former veterans who still hold strong voices in the building, the Warriors clearly have the right leaders and mentors for their newest second-rounders to look up to.
