I love the NBA game...But, the corruption in officiating needs to end once and for all.

Scott Foster. You shouldn't know this name. None of us should know the name of an NBA referee. An NBA referee should never be the focus of post game discussion to the point that you can't help but reflect on that referee's impact on the game. That said, here we are, contemplating the complete butchering of Game 4 of the NBA Finals at the hands of NBA referee Scott Foster. 53 personal fouls. 2 flagrant fouls. 2 technical fouls. 71 total free throws. Make no mistake about it. Someone took charge of Game 4. But, unfortunately, that take charge guy wasn't anyone who suited up for either of the two teams actually playing the game.

Lest anyone forget, Scott Foster isn't just any NBA referee. He's the same NBA referee who received 134 phone calls between October 2006 and April 2007 from fellow NBA referee Tim Donaghy. All of these calls were made shortly before or after games Donaghy officiated and gambled on and all of these calls were less than two minutes long. Donaghy would later plead guilty to two federal charges for match fixing in August 2007. Investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a possible co-conspirator, Foster magically - with the intervention of NBA Commissioner David Stern - skated any charges AND went on to remain an NBA referee for another 18 years and counting.

Nicknamed "The Extender" for his uncanny knack of extending playoff series, Foster has done just that this playoffs - particularly so in the case of the Thunder. Over their last three playoff series against Denver, Minnesota and now Indiana, the Thunder are 4-0 in games officiated by Scott Foster (3-0 in games coming off a loss). In all playoff games NOT officiated by Foster, the Thunder are 6-6 this year. Make of all this what you will. Personally, I'm sick of it. The game deserves better than a cloud of doubt that anyone, let alone a referee, drapes over the game, polluting the outcome to the point that we wonder whether what we just witnessed was the equivalent of a professional wrestling match.

foster is the tip of the iceberg. yeah, he should be terminated, but everything starts with that human gargoyle disguised as league commissioner. until he's there, expect the worst.

Agreed. When is the last time you tuned in for a regular season marquee matchup? They don’t exist anymore because everyone sits their players. The decision to take the weekend off in a championship series is pretty crazy too.

Father's day weekend, at that.

The foster thing is a joke. I am not with Blue on the entire conspiracy but I there's no doubt that foster has, at the very least, the appearance of corruption about him. The fact that he's not only still in the league, but also refereeing the Finals, is a tone deaf move, at best. At worst, Foster has the league by the short and curlies and gets to call the shots. Really not sure what the 3rd option is.

I think the league probably does things behind the scenes to influence outcomes they think will raise the profile i.e. help push trades through, etc. but I really doubt they get near anything that directly affects the outcomes of games. There’s just too much risk involved. Especially when you’re openly embracing gambling. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze, so to speak. I actually think they’re terrified of it.

As for Foster, I just think he’s a hard head that lets things get personal too quickly. It wouldn’t surprise me if the league wanted to get rid of him but between the optics of doing so and the fact that he’s unionized it’s easier to just pretend he’s not a problem. I doubt anyone actually on the take would be as blatant as he is with his agendas.

Then why give him assignments like game 4 of the finals? That's the part I don't get despite agreeing with everything else you said.

He’s unionized. Unless you’re going to go down the path of progressive discipline, you can’t deny him assignments that he would otherwise qualify for. Just not the hill to die on for an employer.

Yeah. It's like when you find that one of your employees has been embezzling company funds. You can't just reassign that guy somewhere where he doesn't have access to money - because he's part of a union! Do you really want to be THAT employer? :noway:  :banghead:
