OT: Raiders finally ready to self-implode

Post#1 » by Twinkie defense » Fri Jan 25, 2008 11:17 pm

Raiders owner Al Davis is locked in a nasty standoff with Lane Kiffin after informing the second-year head coach in a letter received by Kiffin early last week that he no longer has any control of coaching or personnel moves within the organization.

Ummm... Raiders were in the SuperBowl in 2003. How many other teams can say as much?

Granted they have slumped mightily since (and during) that game. But most people have thought they were on the right track this season with Kiffin. And if Kiffin is gone, this would be the most surprising, quick hook yet.

You forget? This is a business. It is always... what have you done for me lately.... not when we used to be good.

Otherwise, 49ers would be in great condition.... which they are not either.

You mean they weren't self imploding when they benched Marcus Allen for boning somebody's wife or daughter (details are sketchy...bad memory)?

How do you root for both? Niner and Raider fans hate each other's guts, there's no in between.

This same "source" said that Kiffin was throwing things and slamming doors when he didn't get the Arkansas job. I don't know the man personally, but he doesn't seem like the type to behave in this manner. I don't believe these reports one bit.

My friend called me this morning to tell me about it, saw it on ESPN, my first reaction was it's BS. People think they know what's going on with the Raiders, but they don't know. Yeah you saw Breach, so what?

Then when I saw Nancy Gay's report (I think it was) I thought uh oh, it's true.

Raiders are denying it all, so far as I can tell Kiffin and Ryan are still coaching the Raiders and at the Senior Bowl... so in the end I guess I want to see what happens next. I'm not sold that Kiffin is gone. Whatever is happening, it's a bad situation for the Raiders. But I'm not sold that Kiffin is gone.

I don't mind the 'Niners - and loved watching them with Steve Young - but Raiders are my team.

Just for balance, I'd hope the Steinbrenner's buy the A's so we could have 3 old men all completely stomping on the chances of us being a title-contending team, now or in the future... itd just be more convenient to lump ineffective, out of date people in one place, kinda like the retirement communities in Florida...

Nolan is alright, he just got the short end of the stick when Norv Turner bolted at the last minute.

Washington just fired Al Saunders. Rob Ryan, Head Coach, Al Saunders, Offensive Coordinator?

I like Kiffin, too. I hope he stays. I also REALLY hope Tom Cable stays. The line has improved a lot this season, solid line play is KEY to any team's success, and the Raiders just can't have a revolving door with Gallery and the rest of the guys.

To a lesser degree, I hope Knapp stays.

The whole thing could have gone down like this: Kiffin is flirting with the Arkansas job, maybe other college jobs. Al Davis is ticked about this, and calls his bluff: "you done here already Kiff, want to coach college ball? Fine, here's a resignation letter for you to sign."

Yes, only one other team in the entire NFL was in the SuperBowl in 2003. Raiders rule!

"As much," as having participated in any SuperBowl since then.

The Raiders were on a great run there, winning the AFC West and only getting eliminated from the playoffs by the eventual Champion (Ravens, Patriots, Bucs) THREE YEARS RUNNING.

Yes they have sucked horribly since January 2003. But I try to appreciate how good they were for those three years, despite the misery now, because I know the majority of teams in the League haven't even been able to enjoy the level of success the Raiders had just a few years back.

I bet that if 'Niners fans got an opportunity to win the NFC West and contend for the Championship the next three years straight, they probably wouldn't concern themselves too much about the aftermath... and double so since they're experiencing a similar "aftermath," without the SuperBowl appearance to blunt the despair.

hester is also a Raiders fan and defends the team with references to past success. Which is a tricky diversion from using the standard Warrior defense of how terrible they were before now.

This information should have been obvious.
Egg on my face for not predicting it to be the case.
