Anyone noticing that Monta is modeling his on court demeanor after Calbert Cheaney?

Calbert spent a lot of time with Monta his rookie year, and I think it shows. How many high schoolers have that kind of even keel on the court in the nba?

I'm sure Calbert helped, but I think most of Monta's focus and self posessed discipline comes from seeing the mistakes of his older brother. In a couple of interview pieces, he's talked about the impact that his brother's failed life has had on him.

Monta doesn't need to fly off the handle - if something happens Baron, Jack, and Matt will take care of it very quickly.

sorry - i don't have a link, but i do remember hearing monta once mention calbert by name in an interview & stated that he was one of his mentors when he came into the league... for what it's worth.

I remember that interview too. Jason Richardson has also said the same thing.

Key mentors for Monta have included Derek Fisher, Adonal Foyle, and Keith Smart, but by far his most important mentor at present is Sidney Moncrief.

Fitz mentioned last night that Monta's never gotten a T in organized ball (HS + NBA). I would say his demeanor has more to do with his upbringing and brother. I think Calbert taught him how to be a Pro, i think his calm on-court nature is rooted deeper.

I don't think Monta has the wit to earn a T.

Well I did find this:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... HSONR1.DTL

Rookie Monta Ellis said players can't help but listen when Cheaney speaks. Jason Richardson and Troy Murphy call him a veteran's vet. Even coach Mike Montgomery, who understandably has chosen getting his youngsters experience over using the dependable Cheaney, describes him as a class act.

"If people would watch him and see how he handles himself in practice, how he's there on time, how he prepares himself mentally, he understands his role," Montgomery said. "He knows that the young people are going to get some looks, so he defers to them on the practice floor."

He was good for the young guys, ther's no doubt about it.

Calbert Cheany FTW.

It's great how he was able to put up with our suckiness back then when he could have been on a more experienced team, playing for a championship to end his career.

Here's another one:

Warriors' little-used Cheaney still on mark
By Geoff Lepper, STAFF WRITER

With the basket cranked up about 25 feet into the air and hanging nearly perpendicular to the floor, the degree of difficulty was significantly higher than normal for the group of Warriors engaging in a shooting competition after practice earlier this week.

Not that it made a difference to Calbert Cheaney. The team's oldest player nailed it on the very first try.

The 13th-year swingman hasn't had much chance to show off his wares on the floor this season, but his swish on the court of New York's Reebok Sports Club was right in keeping with his dual roles: one, to be the elder statesman for the fifth-youngest team in the NBA, and two, to provide some clutch shooting in a hurry off the bench.

So far this season, it's been a lot more of former. Cheaney has played just 19 minutes in the Warriors' first five games, collecting four rebounds and one assist and taking not one solitary shot.

But he's provided invaluable wisdom to guys like Monta Ellis, the 19-year-old rookie.

"He'll just tell you what to expect, what not to do when you first come in, the ins and the outs, the on-the-court and off-the-court stuff," Ellis said. "He keeps you lifted. He knows what to do and how to do it, and what not to do. You just do nothing but respect a guy like that and take in all that he says."

There's plenty of stories that Cheaney could relate, if he so chose. Only two other Warriors were even in high school when Cheaney was selected sixth in the 1993 NBA draft by the Washington franchise then known as the Bullets.

He's a nice Southern kid.

Hopefully $50 mil doesn't go to his head.

No Monta quotes in that one. ^^^

I've heard Monta credit Calbert multiple times, but haven't heard him mention Adonal.

Adonal has a good head on his shoulders.

I'd love to hear if anyone knows if Monta still talks to Calbert.
I know he talks to Adonal and Fisher now and then.

But mostly Sidney Moncrief.

Everyone in the league talks to Adonal and Fisher now and then. I've never heard Monta mention either as a mentor, though.
