On the realgm ticker thing...So about a week after Montgomery accepts to become Cal's coach Trent Johnson leaves Stanford. Is there any doubt Monty would have been Stanford coach once again? I just really hope Montgomery isnt regretting going to CAL now that the Stanford job is open. I mean Montgomery lives in Menlo Park which is miles away from Stanford Campus. What a commute though, from menlo park to berkely everyday. I'm a fan of both schools and would love to see Monty take Cal back to the tournament and flip that program around.

monty was asked about the commute in his introductory press conference. he said he briefly tried it when he came to the warriors but it really sucked so he rented a place in the east bay. he said for the cal job he and his wife will be moving to the east bay and becoming a part of that community.

monty was working in the athletic department at furd before taking the cal job. trent johnson was one of the people monty tried to talk to about the cal opportunity before it became public. trent was a monty assistant back in the day. its entirely possible monty knew that trent was leaving. also, the furd ad kind of pushed trent johnson out and monty worked for the furd ad so he probably knew what was up there.

trent johnson's contract was nearing its end and johnson wanted an extension. furd wasn't exactly in a huge rush to give him one.

i think monty may prefer the cal job. it has a higher upside. its also a new challenge rather than trying to match himself. cal also probably pays better.

oh, and what is lsu doing firing a guy who took them to the final 4 a few years ago to hire trent johnson?

Hey thanks for the info...i didnt catch monty's press conference. But what stanford ad are u talking about ?

Yeah and i would think the Cal job has more upside than stanfords program. Cal can attract more athletic players than stanfords shooters.

the entirety of the press conf is up online on the cal athletics site if you're interested.

ad is short for athletic director or athletic department, depending on context. i think his name is bob bowlesby. none of his comments about trent johnson talking to lsu had much of a "we really want to keep him, we're going to do whatever we can to see that he stays" tone. basically when asked about johnson's potential departure the ad said something like "we know he's talking to them and we haven't heard that he's leaving yet". the ad also dragged his feet with giving johnson an extension, either that or he had no real intention of actually giving one and quietly told johnson to look elsewhere. monty was working for the athletic department at furd in one of those half-time jobs where he basically checks in on the basketball program and schmoozes with donors. he's known trent johnson for a long while, was at least partially responsible for trent johnson's professional development, and worked for the ad. its entirely possible and maybe even likely that monty knew or at least suspected what was about to go down there.

I'm not sure why LSU would hire Trent Johnson either. He had a good year on the backs of the Lopez twins, but he's been a terrible recruiter at Stanford, runs a boring, ineffective offense, and would've probably missed the tournament next year at Stanford.

Plus this way Monty does not appear complicit in taking Trent's job. That may matter to him if he feels loyalty to Trent.
