I really think that we need to start planning for the future, and this is my proposal:
Golden State Trade Breakdown
Change in Team Outlook: -7.2 ppg, +3.4 rpg, and -2.7 apg.
Incoming Players
Stephon Marbury
6-2 PG from Georgia Tech
13.9 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 4.7 apg in 33.5 minutes
Malik Rose
6-7 PF from Drexel
3.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 0.6 apg in 10.1 minutes
David Lee
6-9 PF from Florida
10.8 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 1.2 apg in 29.1 minutes
Knicks 2008 Draft Pick at #4
Outgoing Players
Baron Davis
6-3 PG from UCLA
21.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 7.6 apg in 39.0 minutes
Al Harrington
6-9 PF / SF from St. Patrick's (HS)
13.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.6 apg in 27.0 minutes
Warriors 2nd Rounder 2008
So, I know that we are getting robbed with crappy players coming back, but just wait.
Trade our #14 and #4 pick to the sonics for #2 and #31. This allows us to nab Derrick Rose. Marbury and Malik expire next year, and will maybe give some sort of veteran leadership. The Knicks will acutaly be good with a core of:
Davis/Nate
Crawford/Chandler
Harrington/Balkman
Randolph/
Curry/
Our lineup could be the future of the NBA:
Rose/Marbury
Monta/Bellinelli
Jackson/Azu
Lee/Wright
Biedrins/(Sign Diop)

Did Isiah just get hired by the sonics?
I missed the news.

having two lottery picks might be more important to a team that is still very young and raw...but what about the rest? there are some holes, but they could be patched

I imagine Donnie Walsh is not a big fan of BoomDizzle/Fizzle..I think they'd might do a Baron for Poisonbury swap, but I dont seen them sacrficing anything close to what you're are bringing up.

We need to keep Baron. He is really good.

Among other flaws, the Knicks can end up with the #1,2,3,5,6,or7 pick in the draft. They cannot end up with the #4 pick.
And in general trades based on the top 6-7 picks remaining in order seem a bit premature.

When Donnie Walsh took the job as Knick's GM, he was probably attracted to at last running a high-profile, big market team. In addition, the GM whose shoes he would fill had done such a horrible job that Walsh knew that it would be almost impossible for him not to do better than the last guy did.
However, by doing this proposed trade with the Warriors, Walsh would be making the same mistakes as his predecessor:
1. Trading expiring contracts instead of letting them expire. The Knick payroll will remain in the stratosphere until this happens and in this trade the expiring contracts of Marbury and Rose are sent away.
It is true that Baron's also expires, but it is 65% of Marbury and Rose's so the long road to some sort of fiscal responsibility is further delayed.
Also, the Knicks would have no intention of resigning Marbury or Rose, but will probably want to keep Baron a year from now. While it isn't a wrong thing to try and retain a very good player, Baron already makes $17 mil per year and probably isn't going to accept less than that to be across the country from his beloved LA. In addition he'll be entering his "middle age years" as a basketball player and may not be worth the long-term deal that he will ask for.
2. Trading what young talent there is on the team. Isaiah once traded Ariza in a deal to get an over-the-hill Steve Francis. Here, the young, highly-sought David Lee, the Knicks only reliable rebounder, goes away.
3. Trading away draft picks. How many hundred picks was it that Isaiah gave up in the Eddie Curry deal? Now another - a top 7 one no less. Yes, Baron would improve the Knicks next year, but you can't keep giving up draft picks and expect improvement over the long haul.
If Isaiah was still in charge, this trade might happen. But there a new sheriff in the Big Apple, and he's smarter than the last one.

Veteran leadership from Marbury and Malik. Uh...why not pay Barnes + Pietrus $10 mill each for a year, get more leadership and save $8 mill.
Compare the stats for D Rose to Sean Singletary of U Va. Singletary...higher scoring ( 5 pt a game) higher asst avg, higher 3pt % higher FT%,more steals. Singletary can be had as a middle rd 2.
Lee is nice...a poor man's Tyler Hansborough. So...why not just draft Hansborough and stay CANCER FREE.
We even give up a rd 2 and Al in this nightmare?
Okay....if we want to blow up the joint and see want can be done with the scrap metal....I guess we pay Marbury/M Rose to just go away...like spending $25 million for a handjob...then we buy out Nellie and trade Jackson for 2 good young players,we trade down #4..get a good solid player and a pick in the 20's and maybe a pick 2 yrs down the line.
We get in line behind Portland, the Wolves,Sonics as a young team building toward being where we were a year ago....barely in the playoffs.
Someday we do it right ( Law Of Averages)

Donnie Walsh wants nothing to do with Warriors after that last beating he took. He did his one favor for Mullin, no more for at least another 5 years unless he's giving it to us this time around.

Baron has until June 30 to opt out
In order for pick to be included, trade must be done before June 26
NO WAY ARE KNICKS TRADING THEIR PICK & HAVE THE PLAYER OPT OUT, leaving them with nothing.

Tommy U, is that Richard Widmark on your avatar or someone from a Batman flick?
It seems like the NBA should change something so that the Opt Out doesn't come after the draft. That way, teams could draft knowing whether or not they would be replacing an opted-out player.
Since NBA contracts are from July 1 through June 30, the draft would have to be moved until July 1 or after but that probably wouldn't be popular with the fans. Already Warriors fans are ready to know who next season's rookies will be.

i don't think the knicks want to trade marbury because they want that contract to expire...even if it means gluing him to the bench.

Singletary is a senior playing on a mediocre team, Rose is a freshman on one of the best teams in the nation...you really can't compare the two.

uh.....that's just what draft speculation is all about. Okay...Augustin also compares quite well to Rose and Lseter Hudson had remarkable numbers.
Look at the NFL..were Walter Payton and Jerry Rice second rate goods as seniors from a low level team? My point is that you can trade DOWN the top pick...get a pair of rd 1's,a player and a rd 2 to grab Singletary. Next time you buy a car..are you paying $400,000 for a Ferrarri or Would a vintage Vette at $20,000 make more sense? In this case.....what you REALLY get ain't the Vette-or the Ferrarri, but a raffle ticket on a player who can be anything from great to no big deal.
This franchise has spent top 5 picks on Joe Smith,Chris Washburn and Mike Dunleavy. Monta Ellis and Arenas were rd 2....which are the keepers?
