Terms of Baron's New Deal

Baron and his agent are doing what every player and agent do, for the most part. But in this case, the agent is actually a friend of the player, more a charity case/ward, and his negotiating style is laughable at best. He has a very underdeveloped relationship with the proper Warrior decision-makers, mostly due to his own social habits and location, and he seems to be totally clueless, taboot.

So there's your context for the actual negotiations, Baron's playoff run last year and post-All Star break tank this year aside. We won't even get into age and injuries or coaching styles and retirement parties.

Ramasar said he was insulted. Boohoo, let's see how many more press releases he gets out of this. He's insulted alright, but mostly because the Warriors did everything but laugh at his initial numbers while offering something decidedly shorter and less lucrative than anyone on this board has outlined thus far, with the possible guestimate exception of Option 2 above.

This idiot and his tempermental client cannot hold their $hit together and returning to a franchise committed to Monta Ellis as star point guard for the future is unlikely.

They'll go through the motions of negotiating, hit an impasse, and then he'll agree to play out the year, recognizing he can't make this money elsewhere.

I would hope the Warriors choose to just trade him for younger talent before things get contentious... but that's another discussion...

There is no market until he opts out. If the Warriors stonewall on an extention (which they should) then the market value will be established in 09 when he expires. What he wants becomes irrelevant the moment he opts out or expires, and is kind of irrelevant now since we're not going to offer an extension. I'm dealing with the realistic givens that Baron won't walk away from 17 million and that the Warriors money will be just as green as anyone else (other than the Lakers or Clips) come June 2009.

Whoopsy and Ramsmar are pretty much the only ones who believe an extension is in the cards.

See . . . the thing is, all the things Baron could do to eff up our lives over the next 12 months would all eff up his life worse. He still can't afford a hostile divorce here. He needs to leave Golden State on better terms than we need him to leave on.

For us, it's impending cap space one way or another. We will not be paying no matter what, 17million + for Baron Davis in 2009, so every option is potentially a move in a positive direction.

There's no emergency on our end.

It's certainly no emergency. But if we accept that Baron is temperamental...the fact that he shouldn't create a hostile divorce, doesn't mean he won't and make our lives difficult as he effs up his own.

There are lots of good reasons for Baron and his agent to shut up immediately and sign what Marcus Thompson and Baron's camp are calling a "lowball" offer before THAT is off the table, too. We can talk about good reasons for Baron and Ramasar to get over themselves until we're blue in the face. Those reasons have been the same for two years and it hasn't stopped either from being tools in inappropriate situations to this point.

Contract year Baron did not impress me at all, I'm sorry to say, and he maxed out in the Nelson FreeBall system before quitting. Before he returned from (another) surgery last year, folks were counting the days until we could be rid of him. He was a one man show for a very small number of games in the playoffs after playing great in a dedicated team system running far better than anything from this season, at 30 minutes per game and as one part of a smooth 8-9 man rotation.

We're signing on for what figures to be LESS than that under HIS terms as a one man show who needs the ball all the time and doesn't guard or set up offense when he does not want to and banking on THAT body heading into THAT age bracket?

We really are a desperate and deluded faithful flock.

With Nelson likely on his way out, I'm not at all interested in having Baron Davis around beyond this season and with Ellis the heir apparent and Baron Davis making it clear time and again he does not share well, his departure cannot come soon enough. Despite what Baron Lovers and Homers will try to make up about Ellis needing Baron around or not being a point guard.

The diehard Baron apologists do not give nearly enough credit to what Don Nelson's arrival and the contract years have meant to Baron actually trying, both in the games and on the treadmill.

Miller seems unlikely to be headed this way but there was some cause to expect the Sixers to continue shedding salary. Miller is not overpriced if he plays the way he did this year (but perhaps they don't trust him) and not signed for very long at all but Williams is very good and close to ready.

Baron Davis would not help Williams develop and would be dead set on two things: All Star appearance and contract via stats.

Philadelphia is not desperate. Cleveland is.
