The Monta-Marco Tandem

Assuming Monta's move to PG full-time will be successful, can Marco develops into a real side-kick in the future?

Offensively, they seem to be good fit because both are versatile enough to score and handle the ball with efficiency. They are both pretty unselfish players and could work under a team concept.

Defensively, I guess that is where the question comes in. Monta has the physical tool to become a lock-down defender at the PG position. He can be one next season if he puts more focus on that part of his game, but Marco is a big question mark. There is no reasons to believe he can defend anybody although from the limited playing time he has shown to be an above average help defender and has good instinct.

That said, with Biedrins and Wright defending the post (if they both developed accordingly), Marco's deficiency could become less of an issue. If the Warriors could acquire a strong, defensive-minded SF who could defend the SG ala SJax is now, that will be even better.

So really, is there any reason they can't be our backcourt of future?

gonna say No.. you already have way too many ifs

If Monta can be a full time PG
If Monta learns to play D
IF Marco can defend
If we find a SF who can defend

I just would like to see Ellis actually make the offense work when Baron wasnt on the floor, sometimes didnt even work when SJax was on the floor with Ellis

It is possible, because we've seen so little of Marco, but based solely on the number of #18 picks that go on to become quality starting shooting guards in the NBA, it seems unlikely. The bit we saw of Marco this year probably tilts that more towards the negative than the positive, though it is a small sample size.

Monta > Baron

It's really silly to say the warriors cant play without Baron..Biedrins-Ellis-Jack-Al were all just as key to the warriors success this year as was Baron...

So Monta's a PG...And he's going to be a damn fine scoring PG..The team doesnt need Baron..Biedrins is better off without Baron..The ball moves..Wright will be better off on our future team...We're going to look for quality shots...We're going to focus our offense on BW (54%), Monta (53%) and Andris (62%)..Hopefully Love too...Why the F to we need Baron? He's a frcken brick layer...Let's find new players to surround the young core with..

Belinelli? Maybe..He's got size ..He's gifted..He needs to defend ..I dont know if that's even possible for a Euro SG gaurd..But that's what he's got to do..Get slimmed down and commit to defending.

I think this is key -- will a Monta-Marco combo be a lethal combination that strikes fear into opposing teams? Probably not...

But can that backcourt work with Wright, Biedrins and a strong SG/SF like Jax (minus the chucking)? Maybe.

Marco could spread the defense with his shooting (assuming he gets consistent) so Monta has more space to drive. I also think Marco's ball handling will improve making him an even better fit. I don't have much confidence in his defense improving.

I've had my fun with Bustinelli. I'm ready to forgive him for being a fat prima donna as a rookie if he works and plays well moving forward.

Let me know when it happens.

Ellis seems to grow each season, I have no doubt that his PG skills can continue to improve. The Warriors need Belinelli to step up next season and be part of the rotation or else we're going to see the next line of NBDL guards getting minutes in March and April.

future?

WTF are you talking about?

Jackson a good defensive-minded SF??? Have you seen how bad of a defender he is? He doesn't even put his hand up when he is defending a shot. He does not jump either. He doesn't play defense, because 50% of the time hes on the other side complaining to the refs or catching up after complaining to the refs leaving the Warriors playing 4 on 5.

So no, we don't want what SJax is doing now for our future SF.

Right now I'd take Bukie over him (if we even keep him) and see him as having more of a future with Monta manning the point. Bukie is much further along than Belli thus far in their respective careers. I'd like to see Belli play some of the 3 position. It would good if he could swing between the two positions, especially with Pietrus likely gone. That would give him the opportunity to get more playing time and we could see what his limitations are. He'd have to probably work out hard this offseason to burn off some of that baby fat that Rowell's always talking about.

This would be my future Warriors team as of this moment:

Monta
Bukie
Belli?
Wright
Biedrens.

Don't know if Bellie is capable or if he has the strength but I wouldn't mind seeing that configuration at some point. He should be able to hadle the 3 in Nellieball.

if Bells can take the ball to the rack and not just rely on the jump shot i dont see why not.

im not convinced with Bells size though. Gets punked off screens. Doesnt seem to move without the ball.

havent seen much of the kid...gotta give him the benefit of the doubt. hes better than Rudy Fernandez though
(he was the Portland pick last season??)

Call me naive, but I don't think Marco's defense is as bad as some of you said, or rather that he seems to have some character traits that could make him an above average defender in this league, based again on the limited time I've seen him.

He should load up his computer with Manu Ginobili's games. Manu isn't an all-world athletic either and does not have an imposing figure, but he makes it up with his readiness, headiness, and a general good knowledge of his team's defensive schemes. Plus he gives 110% effort.

Marco needs more experience to reach Ginobili's level, obviously, but he already seem to possess quick hands like Manu and can move relatively well on that end. If he could put in more effort (and strength) then he can at least become above average.

Of course, too many IFs again but this guy is talented and has the chance to grow with right coaching. (Another IF!)

Just let Marco play backup PG. Baron and Monta did not get beotch slap for not playing defense as a pg.... so why should Marco?

It seems like all of those Argentinians are really tough.

The italians lately have appeared to be soft.

Not trying to be to racial, but the teams and leagues they play in might have something to do with it, or maybe the National coaches they played for.

Unless you have Kidd in his prime at PG, it really helps to have one of your wing players be a good secondary ballhandler (such as Prince in Det or Manu in SA). With Baron and Monta playing together this is a moot issue, but with Baron gone in the short or medium term someone will have to fill the role.

Jackson can sort of do this, but he's not as good at it as I'd really like and won't be around forever. Marco has a good enough handle to fill that role for GS, the only question is whether he's ever good enough to get on the court.

This is a big reason why I'm very interested in getting Mayo in a Baron deal (even if it means that the rest of the filler GS gets back isn't very appealing). With Ellis and Mayo together at guard, GS would just need a defense / spot shooting SF, and those guys are fairly easy to find and cheap to fill in.

Hey whussup guys new to the board ... but this tandem could possibly work especially offensively. We know Marco is a shooter, he shouldnt be a volume shooter as Monta will be driving and kicking to an open Belinelli.

We need a SF for the future who will be able to guard the top player on the other team like a Shane Battier to hide Marco's deficiencies on that end. There should be a few of those in this draft (i'm thinking Batum, CDR, somebody with some length). It may even look like Wright may be able to do this, depending on where you want to use him as a 3 or 4. If thats the case then we'd need to draft a big 4 (Speights??) to guard the Amares of the Western Conference as i'm still not sure if Wright will be able to only because i haven't seen it yet.

If the Suns can get away with Steve Nash on Defense, as most teams do not have viable scoring options throughout the 1- 3 positions, Marco should be able to get by.
