Making draft trades...Is it possible for us?
I feel the Kevin Love love from Nellie is real. I've always felt that Love was his kind of big. Versatile offensively and does enough on the defensive and rebounding end to warrant a big gamble. His outlet passing is something Nellie has always stressed from as long as I've been paying attention.
CDR is another guy that I THINK is a Nellie player. Rush may be better in certain areas, but what CDR has over Rush is the mindset to take over and hit the games biggest shots. Rush has a more complete game, but does he have the fire?
Either guy would be a nice pick for us and would definitely help us this next year if no huge deal is possible.
THE TRADES:
MEMPHIS is rumored to be wanting to shed either Cardinal or Collins for their future sale. The 5th pick would be a spot where hopefully Love could be guaranteed. Would the Dubs be willing to deal for Cardinal.
Tough trade to do, because of what we'd have to give up to match salaries. Please figure this possibility out if you could.
MINNESOTA supposedly wants to trade down. They suipposedly would like either Love or Brook Lopez. Supposedly.
Al and #14 for Walker and #3. Walker has huge warts, but the Timberdogs get a more useful player in Al who can play the forward spots with Jefferson. At #14 the Dogs could take Rush or CDR (rumor) to help with their wing position which is the weakest spot on their team.
A sign and trade with Obee might be a possibility to help facilitate something based on their need for a center and his nice fit next to Jeff.
Not likely Al and #14 gets that done.
MINNESOTA with #31 and #34 for the #14
Would you do it? I would only if my guy is gone before our pick.
PORTLAND with #33 and #36. There's a rumor that the Blazers are willing to shed these picks to help them get into position to grab Ben Gordon. Supposedly they see him as a nice fit next to Roy. That leaves Jarret Jack out in the cold presumedly.
Would they consider a trade of Jack, #33, #36 for the rights to Mladen Sekularac. It would save them around 4 mil potentially. Or I could be totally wrong.
No chance this deal happens as they could do better. But would love to get my hands on those 2 picks without giving up the #14. We could do damage with 1 first rounder and 3 second rounders.
Please add any other potential deals you see out there if any.
And cue Reggae to tear these apart, but also he'll be kind enough to give us his options. Of course.
Rip away

It's not possible for us to trade into Kevin Love's draft range without trading Ellis, Wright, or Biedrins.
Simply taking on the salaries of Cardinal or Toine doesn't move you that many slots up the draft.
I would also not trade the 14th pick for two early 2nd round picks.
Take Speights or Rush at 14.

I agree. I also am not as sold on Love as most of this board. Don't get me wrong I think he will be good just not worth targeting in the draft.

See, I dont see us going the Love route unless we move into NYK's spot... which still might not be good enough to get Love.. and even there we would have to take on probably Starbury or something like that...
rather make it around Jeffries and Rose/James with Harrington and Kosta going the other way

I like Love at #14 or perhaps a small trade up to 10-13. I still think that there's a chance (maybe 5-10%) that he falls to #14.
I don't want to give up the value it would take to move up to #3-5 to get him (and I'd want Mayo at #3 anyway).
In short, Love's a very good pick at #14, a solid pick at #10, a reach at #5 and a big reach at #3.

Love might not be in the top 5 this draft, but he fits the Warriors needs. We should target around the #6 pick as i do believe Love will be around there.
Top 4 players in this draft: Rose, Beasley, Mayo, Bayless
Warriors are in position to draft for need...not draft for potential.

Lets Go Baron Davis...i dont care what jersey you put on. Lets go.
Big Smooth is focused and ready to handle the centers of the league.
Curry and Ellis will be a top 5 back court this season. 6/25/2010

Drafting for need is how you end up being the Warriors for most of the last 14 years.
Take the best player or start planning next year's lotto pick.

The Warriors need a some help to the frontline...drafting a man with size versus the player with the most upside (more than likely a guard) would be a mistake

Hoorah for Adonal Foyle, Todd Fuller, Ike Diogu then! Drafting for need rocks!
As for the original thread, both trades wont happen... even if Toine wasn't an expiring, it would still be a tough sell to Minnesota.
My target is to either stay put or refrain from adding any draft picks... we're giving our FO a lot of credit, draft-wise, for picking Brandan Wright at 8 (as if there was any other option
)... remember, they did not draft Belinelli to be a producer 3 - 4 years down the road. They signed Kosta to a multi year deal and cut Lasme.
My primary target is Rush... Love would be great but he wont drop to us and trading up seems unlikely. The 14 can get him most likely, and hopefully will. If anything though, I'd love to add a late 1st to grab the rising Ibaka, leave him in the ACB for one season and then re-evaluate him at 20 in 2009. The best targets to me would be CLE (Harrington) or SEA (take Watson off the books). NJ could be an option as well (Swift + #21 for Al?)...
But basically I don't want to move up in the draft... not after last year.

Nellie's ideal draft last year would have been Yi and Belinelli. He has also traded 3 #1s to grab Webber and then subsequently ran him out of town. Cliff Rozier, Byron Houston, Victor Alexander... theres a ton of Nellie misses. Or are we only going to focus on Tim Hardaway and Brandan Wright (who obviously wasnt expected to be there)?
Its amazing how many people just blindly think Nellie is so amazing... a simple history check paints an extremely accurate picture, and its not like anythings changed.

Love at #9-#10 is just a 4-5 spot trade up. Not that costly. Zooming up to #3 ....that's assuming Love is a can't miss star. He's a safe bet to be a GOOD player but,we'd pretty much need to add a GOOD player to #14 to get him.
Rush isn't a SF....he's a Sg.....so The Wolves already have a SG posing as a F (Brewer) and what they NEED is a C so R Jeff can play more PF. A PG would also make sense. B Rush is kind of a jack of all trades, nothing there is so good he's a starting SG on most teams. He's well suited for 6th man-except we happen to HAVE that.
In this draft-quite a few teams WANT to trade down because after the top 3 the talent drops off....and after the top 7 it drops more. More than usual it's a draft where #8 is not that much more than #18. Trouble is....the teams with those mid-lotto picks want a payoff like it IS a real rich draft crop. "We want #14,and a young player and an expiring cause you get this cancer/chucker we got to dump....." Sound familiar? It's an old tune called the"Suckerfish Blues"

#14 for the 2 high rd 2's the Wolves have won't fly.....unless we get Gomes and they get Belli + POB. Even then I'd try to get a little extra payoff.
Blazers? There may be something. I'm not sending them #14. Got to think about the options.
CENSORED... No comment.

1) We don't know if Rush is a SG or SF, it's still early, but being 6'6" does not disqualify one from playing SF.
2) IF he is a SG, we do not have a 6th man SG on this roster. Belli even with substantial improvement this summer is not going to be the kind of multi-dimensional defensively competent roleplayer you need in that 6th role. Streaky gunners have uses, but farther down the bench. Bukie is less of a SG than Rush is. When you tally up the weak ballhandling and passing, you can't realisticaly pencil Bukie in as a 6th man for a good team in the west either. Are you talking about Pete? Pete ain't here anymore. And would you really prefer to pay 4-5MM per year for what you can get in a 1.45MM 14th pick with a bigger brain?
Rush is a redundant pick if Pete and Bukie are back, and Belli decides he's going to turn into a defensive stalwart. But bringing Pete and Bukie back at F/A money for Rookie/soph level contributions isn't in line with this team's fiscal strategies, and shouldn't be.
If the knock on Rush is that he isn't good enough, fine make that call. But he's not something we already have. That' very superficial analysis.

This draft has a lot of quality. The issue is not that the talent is lacking after 7 or 8, the problem is that there are 20-30 players with solid cases for being drafted that come next.
Most draft classes have very clear tiers. This year, there are three really premier talents with no on-court NBA question marks and really, not very compelling "attitude" arguments against them in the grand scheme of draft history. The worst you're really hearing is that they're gregarious (Beasley) or ridiculously connected (Rose and Mayo). These are not axe-murdering drug addicts.
After that, mock draft boards have a consistent second tier of Lopez, Randolph, Bayless, Gordon, Gallinari. Then it's pretty volatile and even more fit/need-based than the unstable "second" tier. But frankly, there is no reason to put much stock in the supremacy of anyone but perhaps Randolph over anyone not in the top 3. Lots of solid picks, no home runs.
But this is an absolutely wonderful draft year to play in. I know there is talent coming out next year, too, but I think it will be a far more stratified draft class that does not allow the kind of longterm team building this one does. A smart team braintrust would be cashing out to play this round, not putting band-aids on a weak product just to try for another 8 seed.
Ther is absolutely no reason to trade future value (youth or picks) to move up this year unless you can get top 3. But there is every reason to trade very average old-core veterans for additional picks anywhere in the first round and early second round picks will also be very valuable this year.

I dunno... that Nowitzki fella was a decent pick. And he was nearly laughed out of town for picking Sprewell until it turned out Spree was pretty damned good. At least until it also turned out he was a lunatic.
Nelly follows his draft hunches with reckless abandon. Sometimes he misses badly, sometimes he finds a diamond in the rough. I'd expect that approach to resonate with a lot of this board.

Nelson has other moves that brought in good draft talent.
He traded a Mitch Richmond drafted roughly coincidental with Nelson's hiring (at #5) for Billy Owens right before Richmond became a perennial All Star. Keith Smart was their second rounder that year, in case you'd forgotten. Drafted TimBug. He drafted Tyrone Hill and shipped him for the right to draft Clifford Rozier. Second rounders were Les Jepsen and one of the NBAers of the last 20 years, Kevin Pritchard (finish that degree, kids - Pritch was at Kansas under Larry Brown and Pops and it seems to have done him some good). And when he had extra picks, look out! Gatling-Alexander-Shaun Vandiver-Lamont Strothers! Then when he takes great wings in the first, he also makes those Euro scout jobs count! Sprewell-Predrag Danilovic-Matt Fish. He was there for the Penny/Webber swap. Worked out well. Danell Mee in the second was a wise choice. Tyrone Hill, future All Star, netted Rozier and Nelson's keen eye for talent nabbed Anthony Miller and Dwayne Morton to follow up. Then, when the relationships were effectively shattered, he was off to screw with Ewing for a year while Chris Cohan sued him as Joe Smith, Andre DeClerq, and three nobodies effectively killed our hopes and dreams for the next decade +
Now, in 1992, the Knicks had already traded their 1995 first round pick to - anyone? Anyone? That's right, Dallas. They got Rolando Blackman, not so bad. Nelson was not in the draft for 1995, so a nice break before the Dallas draft days.
OK, first up, 1996
Samaki Walker, Shawn Harvey, Darnell Robinson.
Then Kelvin Cato and Bubba Wells.
1998 was pretty good, Traylor for Dirk, then Ansu Sesay, Bruno Sundov, and Greg Buckner.
1999 Leon Smith, OH MY, Wang Zhizhi. Gordan Giricek, career roster filler, followed. Nelson and the international scouting once again very strong.
2000 Etan Thomas, Courtney Alexander, Donnell Harvey, and a foreign gem! Eddie Najera (via U Oklahoma).
2001 Kyle Hill, Kenny Satterfield.
2002 Current Warrior international hot topic, Mladen Sekularac (that's right, we've got those rights - thanks Sarunas Marciulonis!)
2003 HUGE late first find Josh Howard and another Chinese home run, Xue Yuyang
2004 You've got to hand it to Nellie's European draft work, and his kid's, Vassilis Spanoulis would become one of the most important contract filler players of the last year and a half.
I know there were more trades in there. And I know the draft was not as rich then as it seems to be becoming now. And I know draft hits are rare. But the Nelson draft prowess is 100% myth. He has not valued picks more than anyone else, he has taken more blind dives on bad international prospects than Chad Ford - only his actually count, and he has tended toward expediency in all ways since he began running NBA franchises. He's still an innovator and a savvy guy, but he is one of the most notorious draft day gamblers out there and most of his risks don't pay off. Other draft strategies work better and longer.
Not the man I want running too many drafts for me. When Patrick O'Bryant is still playing center in the league 5 years from now and Marco has finished up his rookie deal and returned to Jasikevicius-level cash in a Europe that will pay him what the NBA won't, some of the diehards may finally have to admit it. Until then, drink up.

Clifford Rozier was clearly a miss.
Byron Houston was not a great pick, but he had some real good Warrior moments.
As much crap as Victor Alwxander took from Nellie he had his moments, but i'll give you that one. but give Nellie some credit because he also grabbed Gatling that year and though he only mustered up one All Star year for the Heat, he was productive.
I believe Nellie used a draft guru by the name of Fitzgerald. (not Bob). Or maybe it was Ed Gregory. Sid will know. But Gregory was the drafting genius.
