Will the TPE expire?

Post#1 » by turk3d » Tue Jun 24, 2008 1:00 pm

How many of you here think the Warriors will use their TPE before it expires and if you think it will, what do you think the chances are? Seems to be a bit of controversy surrounding this.

I would have participated in this poll, but there was no option for exactly 12% chance.

Take a tip from Abyss and be more consistant. You've said from the moment we got the TE that the Dubs wouldn't use it.

So vote slim to none like I did. I've watched last year and am convinced that by the way the season was handled, that they're not gonna use it.

I still see the TPE being used. The Mavs are barely a playoff team and the Cuban is an aggessive owner. Somehow I see it being traded to Dallas in order for them to acquire players.

Of course the TPE will expire.... there's a stickied thread about this..

We're nowhere near a ring and the TPE will only bring us undesirable / expiring contracts back, so what would be the point? Kiss it goodbye.

i voted for slim and none but leaning towards more slim than none. hey i am sure they are exploring the opportunities to use a portion of the TPE. will they use the majority of it? no chance, but they could potentially spend about couple of millions to take back some body's junk(s) for extra picks if they opted to go that route.

slim chance, though.

All of it or part of it? Doesn't have to be all. Just wondering if any of it will be used.

As for the sticked thread, there's a lot of stuff in it, mainly on salaries and prospective capspace. This thread is a poll specifically about whether or not the Warior fans think that theTPE will be used at all even if you think there's only a slim chance. So far, it's 50/50.

Because there's a limit on the number of choices you can have (10) AI. I guess you're like Floppy (he chose 12%). I guess he and Pietrus are your heroes. It never ceases to amaze me how much man-love we have on this forum.

There's scenarios where we might trade someone (Al?) and part of the return is an expiring and we trim a bit on a 2 yr basis-then get a nice deal on a low $ usable guy spending $3-4 mill of the TPE rather than spending equal $ on Barnes or some MLE. So...I said 20%. I REALLY doubt we spend anywhere near the full $10 mill, but on a small scale its no different than a low $ MLE/LLE. If both Pietrus + Barnes depart then that's an option.

Simple. The TPE sum is basically payroll trimmed..money saved...$10 mill, off the J Rich deal. The $$ saved is in itself one goal. That lets us give someone a contract ( Pietrus??) and not go to Lux Tax hell.

Who can you GET on a pure TPE deal? Basically....some teams salary dump. There ARE complex deals where we might get a very favorable trade-Part A but part B we use some TPE to swallow a horseturd sandwich. Lets say we give A Harrington + S+ T Pietrus for Marion but the poison pill is we use TPE to take Blount. Without the Blount part...Miami hangs up the phone. We take a big hit $$$$ wise but we replaced Al with Marion..and don't lose our #14 pick to do that.

Another case...Earl Watson or Ridenour to us for TPE but its linked to we deal Belli for their low rd 1,a couple of rd 2's and ?

Maybe some team offers Azu a Cardinal size deal...and we already let Pietrus-Barnes-Cro-POB escape...then Kosta P gets a nice deal to be a superstar in Kahzakistan or wherever....and we use a few $ of TPE to trade for Joe Stiff just to save face and seem to have a backup big man.

Many possibilities.

What WON'T happen is we flat out excercise the whole $10 mill on some guy or in some package that's not just awesome.

Figure we only give up some of that 'saved" money if there's a deal that TOTALLY rocks. The odds we spend even half of the TPE are slim and it gets progressively less likely we spend more.

^^
The problem with most of those deals is that the TPE expires June 30th, so we won't know who exactly is staying and how much they'll cost since we can't negotiate with any of those guys until July.

The way that some are talking, the may not need it, which would be all the better. It's a nice chip to have though if you need it to sweeten a good deal.

Either they'll use it or they won't... that's 50%, right? (credit to Steve Martin).

You left off a very popular option - zero percent!

I voted for 10% chance (maybe would have said 15%)... I think there is definitely a chance that it is used, not zero percent chance that some have championed. It will take the right opportunity though, no using it just to use it.

Yeah don't forget guys, Warriors could go all in at $9.9 mil... they could use it to sign two $4 mil/year guys... they could use a couple mil of it. It's not all or nothing (though even a little of it could put us into the tax... depending on Monta and Andris' deals).

its possible to use it and not add alot payroll.

here's an example, just an example!
AL for Varajao+Pavlovic...
trade is within 125%+100K

breakdown:
TE for Varajao($5.3M) + Pavs($4.2M).. yes, you can split the TE for two players
AL($8.4M) for nothing...

-this creates a brand new traded player exception in the amount of AL's salary($8.4M)

in fact, if AL is traded before the TE expires, its highly likely that our TE was used and a new one was created.
