What happens if first thing in the morning the NBA offices open on July 9th and Ellis signs a contract for 5 years $15 million per year (flat rate).

The warriors would instantly lose all their capspace, correct?

Ellis's caphold would go from very little to $15 million.

We would let him go. He doesn't deserve that much.

Name the free agents you expect to be agreeing to sign with the Warrior and name the team you expect to be able to make the max offer to Ellis.

The Warriors have very little to worry about right now. They own free agency now and will renounce Baron Davis if the player(s) they want are ready to sign. They're the busiest phone line in the league at the moment not because teams want Baron Davis but because restricted free agents want to leverage their controlling organizations via supposed Warrior interest.

But realistically, who is worth that kind of trouble?

Memphis isn't in this market. Stefanski in Philly is on record that he wants to take the Detroit approach to cap management. I don't see them doling out a large offer sheet. They'll have a cheaper version of Ellis in Louis Williams. I don't think he and Biedrins will be signed until August whether it be an offer sheet or with GSW.

So no one can answer this?

Do the Warriors lose their capspace, or they get to make an offer to a FA even though Ellis' caphold sky rockets...

It doesn't have to be for the max... Lets say it just starts at $10 or $11 million... but is more than what GS was willing to give so that's why he signed with another team.

18 million will be off the books from Davis plus 10 mil from our tpe.

I'm sure if they're about to sign a free agent they'll tell Monta to hold on for a second. They will match Monta anyways and I think Monta wouldn't mind if another big-time player was here with him as well.

as soon as ellis signs an offersheet then the Warriors lose all that caproom. The Warriors would then have the option of renouncing ellis to reclaim that room of course.

Warriors will lose capspace when they sign Monta and Biedrens anyways so I don't see your point. They're not planning to sign any free agents which is the only reason wht they'd care. It only would become an issue if they decided to do a trade, but since it's likely Baron will be involved if they do, I don't see it being an issue for them. They could have paid Baron (if he didn't opt out), resigned Monta (for whatever he is offered) as well as Biedrens. The only impact it could have is that it would put them over the cap and quite possibly over the lix tax but now with Baron's situation, it's not likely to happen unless he is S & Ted for the equivalent amount.

If Monta has the opportunity to get maxed out, I don't think he is going to pass up that opportunity no matter what the team is telling him.

The larger problem is, how much is Monta talking to Baron about how to negotiate in the NBA?

If I were Philly I would sign Ellis to an offersheet to kick off FA knowing that the Warriors would match it. Golden State and Philly are the only 2 teams with enough caproom to give big offers to FA's but the instant that Ellis gets an offersheet then that becomes his new caphold. They put that offer to Ellis and it pretty much removes them as competition to sign guys.

Ironically the Sixers have a player in Louis Williams where they are vulnerable to this same thing, though with a bigger offer it would hurt far less to let him walk. Any team with the MLE could screw the Sixers through.

But the only time this would work is if the palyers involved think they will get much more from jumping the gun than they will by waiting.

Why would Philadelphia tie up their own cap room in an offer to RFA Ellis if you're proposing they muscle the Warriors off of the Brand market?!

What FA is out there that we would want to sign (other than Baron perhaps) who might want to sign with us? I can't think of too many out there who would (now that Marion has decided to opt in). I think that all that's left are probably S & Ts.

Edit: I see, it's about Brand. I really think that both Phill and LA would have the inside track on him and I don't think we will have more cap space than Philly and I know that LA can match, so what's the worry?

if Monta signs a MAX contract - expect 5 seasons of 28-38 wins on average and lots of ping pong balls. i guess we can never get rid of our old habits...losing and more losing.

i hope another team makes the mistake of signing Monta to a max deal. Id love to see Monta take the QO and cash out next season as an unrestricted free agent. Good work Mullin.

Iguodala already counts as 8.5 or so million against the cap so it would take a bigger offer but yeah- you definitely could do that if he were willing to go along with it.

The offersheet is only good for 7 days- and thats 7 days where EVERY team that is likely to spend big money in FA would be pretty much paralyzed. There just wouldn't be anywhere else for players to go. And which ever team was left standing at the end with caproom intact would be in a much stronger negotiating position.

No risk, sorry. Warriors are in control of free agency this year all of a sudden.
And the smart move may well be to hold the line, invite talented young players to summer camp for one roster spot, consider role player veterans, move Al and Stephen for more help and immediately expiring contracts, and land another great pick with a fun development year in preparation for major play next year.

There's plenty of due diligence to be done first, though. Something may come up.

There won't be a major play next year... after the extensions are given out to Ellis and Biedrins then there just won't be a whole lot left over next offseason.
