He was so good in the playoffs, but then he started missing his threes, and eventually was never given any minutes.

Why did Barnes suck last season? One might better ask, why was he so good the season before?

I still like what Barnes brings to the team, and would take him back at a reduced salary. I think he's gone though.

He was so good because he was new to the team, and wasn't put into "captain" of the team which made him not worry about not leading the team the right way.

Frank Gore's mom died, and he managed to have a 1k rushing total, under a horrible offensive coordinator.

What salary would he get towards the middle of free agency, just out of curiousity?
But we are up against the lux tax, so it comes down to pure $$ for us Raps

I don't think Barnes will get as much as he did last year and I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up playing for the vet's min.

because barnes sucks? It's not unusual for a scrappy guy to have one breakout season due to optimal conditions, then return to form. Not that he can't be a productive role player, but I'm pretty sure he's upset that no one threw Brian Cardinal/Jason Kapono money at him, and consequently returned to earth.
i mean, yeah he had personal issues last year, so i'm gonna have to give him slack for that. but even when he was kicking ass i never thought it'd last.

If it wont take much to get him, I hope Rap can sign him towards the end of free agency.
He could see significant amunt of time with us, due to our makeup of current wings.

One of the things about Barnes is he'll never make it in this league based on skill, but on guile and attitude, which were really good his frst year. Unfortunately, he was a victim of Nellie (who deserves much of the credit for his success) deciding that he should be a starter (as LF/Squid put it, nice story 2 or something to that effect). What he turned into instead was the American Trainwreck. This was a case where a fringe NBA player was given a chance, produced as a starter due to a series of injuries, but then the expectations became too high, and when thrust into essentially a starters role and being forced to play out of position at the power forward spot (this gimmick worked that one serious in the playoffs against Dallas but failed miserably against Utah), coupled with his mother's illness and eventual passing away, was put in a position to fail, rather than succeed. On top of that, he picked up a bad agent who overvalued him and as a result he never recovered to have a down year.

I'd like to see Barnes be given another chance to stick this coming season, for low pay and as maybe the 12th man on the roster if there's a spot for him. I think that coming off the bench as the 7th or 8th man, he is capable of bringing some energy off the bench for us, particularly as a veteran to relieve and maybe help mentor some of the youngsters that it looks like we're going to have. His versatility is a plus but I would like to see him playing more 3 for us, focusing on defense more and trying to shut down opposing 3s that we may have trouble with and only playing maybe 20 minutes a game max. Plus play him at the 4 infrequently in certain situations where we want to go small (if we think we have an advantage for some reason), but just in spurts.

He needs to play more intelligently (eliminate many of the bonehead fouls he creates), which he's shown hes' capable of doing the past and I think he can definitely be an asset and help to contribute to the depth issuwe that many here are concerned about. Play the youth, but have the vets hanging around who can help them out when they are getting schooled out there (which you can guarantee they will). I hope we bring him back, just at a reduced role.

if the w's use much of their cap space on 1 player (like they've attempted with arenas & now with brand), there'll be plenty of roster spaces that need to be filled. there are 9 contracted players (i included the draft picks) & possibly 10 if azu is re-signed. if barnes is willing to make the team out of training camp again, he'll have a chance to fight for a spot during training camp.

Barnes is good as gone, dude. It's a 95% certainty.
But if that 5% is there, that 5% is there.

We shall see.
