Forget chasing Mr. Achilles Tear with a max deal

Post#1 » by Sid the Squid » Tue Jul 8, 2008 5:36 pm

Let's get Rubio or Holiday to go with Monta-Belinelli-Randolph-Brandan Spelled Wright-Biedrins.

Play the kids big BIG minutes..If we suck? Tank post-All-star break..

Now I can get behind this idea 100% as opposed to all the FA signings being thrown around...

Jax and Al can fetch expirings, maybe some small pieces like late 1sts, early 2nds, cheap useful players... if you get both of them off the books, factor in a 1m bump in the cap and the Foyle buyout being gone, and we could be here:

Monta - 10m
Biedrins - 10m
Wright - 2.6m
Busty - 1.6m
Randolph - 1.5m
Hendrix - 500k

We'd have over 30m to play with - 2 max offers and what will probably be a lotto pick in the West in a draft topheavy in guard talent. The hard part would be getting the expirings - we'd have to find a desperate team that would want to pay Al 10m next year...

:meditate: Patience W's fans... that's as ideal of a scenario as we could hope for.

I agree on passing on Bland, but not on signing no one.

I like the idea of collecting young talent. I would have loved to pick up Rodney Carney (though Calvin Booth is dog sheezy). After the big names sign (Maggette, Brand, Arenas, Fizzle, Iggy, Josh Smith) there will be plenty of bargains out there. Remember there was practically no money available for Barnes and Petey last year. Same same this year.

I say Mulson gets creative and gets us some diamonds in the rough (not Petey, maybe keep Barnes but he is more like a piece of a broken Olde English bottle you find on the street-rough around the edges but has glimmers of something great).

We are making the playoffs. We will probably win a ring.

Boozer will definitely opt out of $12.6M.

Forget Brand.

Just for kicks, lets say that we go for the full on tank job.
Trade Al and S-Jax to Cleveland for Wally, Anderson, their 2009 1st rd pick/2nd rd pick, and cash. Promptly but out Wally for $10M.

Play what would be the most inexperienced rotation in the league...in 2009 we get Rubio.... Rubio/Monta tandem becomes the most promising in the league...we draft a backup guard with the Cleveland pick...We throw a ton of money at Granger...new lineup:

Rubio/Cleveland pick
Monta/Belinelli
Granger/Randolph
Wright/Hendrix
Biedrins/Varejao/Kosta

Kind of a cool looking team.

I like Granger a lot. It's a mistake to throw a ton of money at a wing player, though, unless he's named LeBron or Kobe.

all for it.

I've said it multiple times, you can't try to please the "win now" and "rebuild" fans at the same time. Sure, you can get to the playoffs trying to do both, but you aren't winning a title until your GM realizes the talent is there, and makes the necessary "all in" moves.

While I'm not gonna be upset if we land Brand, I don't think Monta/AB/Wright will be title contender quality by the time Brand starts to really regress due to age. So, in the simplest of terms, whats the point?

Combine this with the fact that I love Rubio and Jrue's game (as well as Tyreke's potential, and Curry's star quality) and i believe next years draft is a great place to find Monta's backcourt mate.

Next year has to be it though, get your team set up by next draft at the latest. From then on, draft role players or trade 1sts for vets to help provide a winning mentality. To many teams get caught up stacking young players while also trying to get vets to win. If we had Rubio, Monta, Randolph, Wright, Biedrins, Hendrix, and Marco, you have to trust them as your core, and start grooming them to contend as soon as possible.

Lastly, I have no problem with Monta playing a year at the PG position, and then sliding over to the SG spot if we got Rubio. I love 2 PG capable guards playing at the same time.

I still say you keep Al so you have a locker room vet who doesn't suck complete ass. We're going to have A LOT of young guys running around East Oakland with several million dollars for the next few years. They're gonna need a chaperone of some sort.

"I love 2 PG capable guards playing at the same time."

It's never been successful. Let's be the first!

It's basically what Kobe, Wade, MJ, Lebron, Ray Allen, etc etc are. All of those guys are non-PG's that are more than capable of bringing the ball up, setting up an offense, and creating for other teammates. Monta already has PG qualities, and a year of playing PG will make him a much better SG.

And there is also the option of taking a player like Hardin or Curry who are more adapt at playing SG, thus leaving Monta as the starting PG.

excellent thread. let's go for it. tank in 08, draft rubio in 09, then try to attract Lebron in 2010. winning 20 games and getting rubio >>>>>>>>>> then winning 38 games and missing the playoffs.

like everything you wrote Poet, but you can give up on the Lebron idea. Dude is going to NY or staying in Cleveland.

I never wanted Brand in the first place. One he only would have blocked Wright's development and two no way do you offer max dollars to someone coming off(a two year injury) an achillies tear.

the reality of it all is...we wont have to try to tank.

inexperience and lack of depth wont produce winning results.
Lets Go Baron Davis...i dont care what jersey you put on. Lets go.
Big Smooth is focused and ready to handle the centers of the league.
Curry and Ellis will be a top 5 back court this season. 6/25/2010
