What will it cost to get the #1 pick?

Post#1 » by rcg » Sat Feb 14, 2009 12:11 am

I'd like to see the Warriors stand pat at the trading deadline and wait for the lottery to pick up the PF we need, Blake Griffin, at an affordable rookie salary. Let's assume the W's play pretty well from here on out and end up with the #10-12 pick in the 09 draft. Now package that pick with some combination of current players to get the #1 pick. I'd personally consider moving some combination of Crawford, Bellinelli or Wright along with our pick to get the #1. What do you think it will take?

This is a very specific question, moving from #10-12 to #1, hence the new thread.

The #1 pick in the draft has never been traded in the history of the NBA...

Really, what about Webber? But that took the #3 pick and three future first rounders, so I don't think we can trade for it.

Teams don't trade the #1 pick because fans go goofy for them...season ticket sales go thru the roof as soon as a team secures the #1 pick...Webber was traded for Penny who came in with the same amount of hype...JBC was traded for Parrish and McHale but that's when the NBA was full of cocaine addicts...

Only team I can see trading away the num 1 pick is Minnesota since they have Al and Love at pf already. But it would take Biedrins + more, and by more, not the Crawford, Bellinelli or Wright crap you posted.

Really expensive to move up to #1. If the Warriors were set to get say a top five, and lets say we traded AR to the Knicks to get a top five from them, that could get you a #1 perhaps. But if the #1 is a Shaq or TD it won't happen regardless... and if he's a Joe Smith it would be a stupid waste.

I'm happy with the young bigs, with time, though. Wouldn't mind a solid vet PF to round out the rotation in the meantime, and it's hard to say no when you're getting an All Star in return, but I'm set on PG in the draft this summer... is Ricky coming out and can we get him? I'm not a big draft follower this early, but he won't be number one right? If we can't get him at our spot maybe we can get him by sending our pick and Wright? They're not ready yet but we have two young PFs... but not a SINGLE pg on the roster - that is mission #1.

W R O N G.....

Maybe it was before your time BUT......SOME dumbass team DID trade Robert Parrish and the 3 rd pick ( McHale) to get the #1 (JB Carroll)...then since that went so well...rades rhe #3 ()Penny Hardaway and 3 more #1 picks dor a # 1 (Webber)

That team -was GSW.

The lesson perhaps is that you pay a LOT to get THE #1...a LOT...and if you don't nail it, you are SO screwed. Usually....there is a Value Pick in the pick 15-35 zone. If Old Rem sees a Magic Johnson or Olajuwon available #1 Old Rem will be just ANNOYING in his insistance that we pay whatever. Blake G is good-but not a guy so astounding and rare I give crazy value to get him. I'd "keep on touch" but not expect anything.

Only once in 5+ years is it really worth the high cost to move up to a top 3. Most years a trade DOWN has the best payoff IF (not GSW) the scouts-GM-Coach-staff are a solid team.

If- our wretched start and luck in the lotto gets us the #1..who-Hoo, but reality is we can get a lot without sacrificing anyone we have.

Chloroform, a steamer trunk, some cinderblocks....SOP......

Even then, Thabeet is a real reach-and probably is gone when we pick. I'd say he HAS improved in terms of focus + effort. He could add some reliability and skills and be special or could be POB minus the shooter's touch. With MOST coaches-worth a shot. Nellie would have Thabeet thinking retirement in a couple of years.

Every year college hoops fans think the next Jordan/Hakeem is coming out but most of the time the top 2-3 players are great players but not something you can build an entire franchise around. I don't think Griffin is someone that's gonna make a club a contender by his lonesome.

As of December, no.

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Ricky-Rubio-1155/

Griffin will be very good, no doubt. He's 6'10" and not skinny, could go on and on about what he does well...would love to have him but will never happen. He will be a very good, if not a great NBA player...and he's not a dumbass like amare. IMHO haha!

I say we can get the first pick just doing what we are doing.
You don't have to tank to be the last team to land the first pick.
Like the previous darfts, the 3rd - 6th worst teams got the #1 pick.
So, I say we keep doing what we do and we might have a chance.

We're about to take ourselves further down the Lottery chart Fung. We're gonna win enough games to take us out of the 6th spot. We're probably looking between 9-12 soon.
