I've been a fan of Linebrink's for awhile now.

Nice pickup

dan would have liked to hold onto Inman but he's right you have to giveup something to get something. I also like that he is a Type A free agent and we would get great picks if he leaves. We did need pen help in the worst way and really wish he was a lefty but its still a good move.

If he leaves after the season with us not re-signing him we get compensation draft picks.

Since he's a good player, higher rounds. Higher meaning lower.

Linebrink has struggled mightily lately and has much better ERA at pitcher-friendly PETCO than he does on the road. He also has a 9.35 ERA overall this month. And we give up Inman. Not a fan of the trade.

I don't mind getting the bullpen help but not a fan of trading Inman AND Thatcher for a pitcher like Linebrink.

It's a gamble. It's one thing to give up a prospect for a reliever who's playing well, but Linebrink has been struggling on top of that. Historically he's had some good seasons but always with the Padres. Is he any better than Heath Bell?

Inman's put up great numbers in the minors but I've heard he's considered something of a trick pitcher who might not have the stuff for the majors. His PECOTA projections aren't great considering how good his minor league numbers are. We won't know for a while what we gave up, so we can only hope Linebrink can contribute now.

For those who say he bolsters his numbers at pitcher friendly Petco Park really don't know much about Linebrink. Yes, I'm not a fan of dealing Inman and Thatcher for him but he has been stellar on the road the last three seasons (2004-2006). Here's a comparison.

On the Road
7-4, 2.29 era, 2 sv, 114 g, 122.0 IP, 109 so, 35 bb, .188 baa

At Petco
15-4, 2.75 era, 1 sv, 105 g, 111.1 IP, 112 so, 36 bb, .254 baa

At Miller Park
0-0, 1.50 era, 0 sv, 6 g, 6.0 IP, 7 so, 1 bb, .100 baa

So, he doesn't look too bad. Definitely more stable than what we have in our bullpen. Our Pen is now legit with Wise, Turnbow, Linebrink, and Cordero.

Linebrink also has postseason pitching experience...

The type of picks you also acquire are right after round one like 31-40 something depending on the amount of players that left....

He also has a career ERA of 3.19. I'll take my chances on that. What's Inman's ERA been this past month?

To bad he's been stinking up the joint the last month or so.

Keep in mind the Padres are 1.5 games back and they still traded Linebrink. If they thought he was the same top relief pitcher he was in the past, why would they trade him?The answer is they wouldn't have.

They got a great haul in return for a guy they just demoted from the setup role.I'm a big Melvin fan,but not of this trade.

Plus, the Padres must believe in Thatcher more than we do because it looks like he will be joining their big league team.

Wouldn't it be a kick in the face if Thatcher pitches better than Linebrink the rest of the year and they get Inman on top of it.

No picks. In baseball you can't trade draft picks.

Maybe Melvin is thinking Linebrink will come in and turn things back around after a short struggle with just a change of scenery, much like occurred with Cordero last season?
