Wakefield frustrates Jays again
By Allan Ryan
"Nobody ever wants to face a knuckleballer in a dome," said Thomas, on the matter of Wakefield's sizeable seven-inning contribution to this 4-1 win by the Beaners.

"He threw a couple there tonight and I was, like, `Wow!' I was amazed."

"You can't judge anything on that," added manager John Gibbons. "When Wakefield's on, he can do that to you. Then you go up against (Brendan) Donnelly and (Jonathan) Papelbon after him and it looks like they're throwing 120."

Injuries strike at Jays aura
By Richard Griffin
"I couldn't disagree more," Vernon Wells said prior to the game. "The last couple of years the injury problems that we have had strengthens us (now). It makes it easier to go through it, this time. Now guys are not paying so much attention to the injuries. They're paying more attention to what we need to do to win without those guys.

"Our focus and attitude have changed completely. Guys take it as a chance to prove themselves. Guys are just looking to get in the game and to help the team win at any cost."

Wakefield's career floats along
By Ken Fidlin
Ah, the unappreciated knuckleball. In the hands of a lonely artisan like Tim Wakefield it is a weapon as potent as a Joel Zumaya 102-m.p.h. fastball, as effective as a Johan Santana slider or a Roger Clemens splitter. Over the years there have been many famous knuckleballers but, as far as we can tell, Wakefield is a fraternity of one right now, either in the majors or anywhere near the majors. Is it possible the casual now-you see it, now-you-don't performance Wakefield put on last night at the Rogers Centre is a dying art?

Janssen jacked up
By Mike Rutsey
Janssen, who came on for Gustavo Chacin in the seventh inning in the Jays' 2-1 victory over Boston, pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit. But he admits it wasn't his best outing.

"You tell yourself it's just another game, but in the late innings of a tight game against a divisional opponent with a big crowd, you're more excited than amped up," Janssen said.

Wakefield's knuckler handcuffs Jays
By Robert Macleod
Gibbons tinkered with the lineup that squeezed out a 2-1 American League victory 24 hours earlier over Daisuke Matsuzaka in the first game of the three-game set against the Red Sox.

Knowing the Jays were facing a wily knuckleballer, Gibbons inserted veteran Matt Stairs into left field in place of the rookie Lind, who was 0-4 with three strikeouts in Tuesday's game.
