He did. I don't know why you're being so hard on the guy. At least he's not like, Dwayne Jarret who was supposed to be the second coming and ended up being a load of nothing.

Now....if we got Eddie Royal....He's a beast. Gotta love hindsight.

Oh, shout out to Kevin Payne. Now that was a good pick up.

Ha! You were supposed to forget about that. I gave him his props in that preseason game thread as I recall so I'll correct myself in saying he was stinking it up in his tryout before that. He didn't seem comfortable at all in that role and a 3rd quarter punt return in the 2nd preseason game isn't going to change my thinking on that point.

I'll lighten up since I'm obviously fighting alone here. My initial point was why go hard at a WR in Rd1 when we just took a shot in Rd3 and we've got bigger problems at DE and probably OL ? Drafting wide receivers are such a crap-shoot, too....ask the Lions.

I also agree with Chewie on the DE 1st round pick. Its where the greatest need is. OL is doing ok and about to get a 1st round pick back (I'd go free agency to beef that up). Our secondary looks good if it stays healthy (the young guys stepped up when it counted). I would never go WR in the 1st round (thats another FA position IMO). RB, TE, QB are set (when's the last time we could say that!)

That leaves DE and LB. I go DE 1st round and LB 2nd.

Oh and as for Anderson? cough cough *roids?* cough cough...

48 points!!!!!!
Most since '86

DE is not a bad option for 1st round
Our Pass D is a serious weakness, but its not just the pass rush
We have very physical starting corners but they are avg to below average man up corners------the young guys are showing flashes

Upgrade the pass rush
Upgrade the man up ability of the D (this is tough b/c so much is invested in Tillman and Vasher; neither of which is a lock down corner----Maybe do some corner play by committee)
Upgrade the interior offensive line so Forte can do his thing

Pass rusher in the first will probably get us the most for what we need
After that I go Guard and lockdown physical Corner
SS/Wideout would be next, but I would look to FA or Trade here

Lloyd, Hester, and Davis are solid, and would be so much more dangerous if we had a Primiere wideout that opposing D's have to really worry about
Payne is a backup

and JA, its ok to trade picks for proven talent

It would be awesome to have a stud WR on the team like Crabtree.

One that doesn't drop for sure TD passes

100% agreement except for that. I really think this guy will be a fixture for a while.

I agree with emperor... Payne is solid, and he's going to get better.

But I think that coaching and scheme is more to blame then Tillman and Vasher for our underwhelming pass defense. Along with the poor pass rush.

Payne is solid. I love him.

He's the reason Mike Brown isn't injured... knock on wood! When MB was MB he would play a lot of run defense and still be able to retreat to center field and still be able to go lateral from sideline to sideline. These days, not so much.

Payne has taken over that roll and is playing the run D help, which allows Mike Brown to play more of a pure safety roll. Reducing his lateral movement, stress on those knees, and decreasing his exposure to big hits.

Nonetheless, Mike Brown still plays more like a traditional strong safety, that being slow in coverage and not that effective unless he's up around the line of scrimmage.

Cliff Levingston was preaching this before the last draft but we really need an impact safety that can cover. The cover 2 is based on guys that can get to the QB and rangy safeties.

Follow up on the Bennet discussion, Berrian was a 3rd round rookie WR who finished with 15 catches in his rookie year, he was behind the stellar WR corps of... David Terell and uh... Justin Gage. Granted that 04 team was horrific passing the ball, but still. Most WRs take time.

And some never pan out at all. If you're following that line of thinking, though, and you think Bennett will mature in time, that's all the more reason to not go into the WR well again in the early rounds of the '09 draft....

I like Kevin Payne a lot. That whole thing where the guy dropped the pass right in front of him and the announcers were like "he's starting to develop a a reputation of being a big hitter" that's nice stuff.

Btw, if we do get a new DE. Let's not bench Alex Brown ever again.

Areas where we can improve -
Interior Offensive Line(Run blocking)
DE(Pass rush)
Impact Wide Reciever(Crabtree?)
Pure coverage safety
Healthy Cornerbacks(and ones that can cover better)
Linebacker(Urlacher's replacement)

While I'm decidedly NOT in Kevin Payne's corner, I do agree with your assessment of our needs. Don't look now, though, but with Tait being 34, you may as well add OT to that list.

Jamar Williams just may be the eventual Urlacher replacement. I've heard cries to slide Urlacher to the outside, too.

Given his decline this year, I say it needs to happen. He's better away from the scrum, than being in it.

great game...bye week for chicago, minny and green bay, so we'll have to share the division for the packers for a few weeks, then we should get to pound on the lions.

Someone should get lovey smith favre's number for when we play the packers.

Well, the information he gave Millen clearly worked for both the team and his career...
