Marinelli accepts Bears offer

Never thought I would be thrilled with a coach who went 0-16 the previous year coming here but this was a great signing.

According to NFL sources, Rod Marinelli has agreed to join the Bears as assistant head coach/defensive line.

Marinelli, fired as the Detroit Lions head coach after a historic 0-16 season, reunites with close friend Lovie Smith. The two were position coaches together with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Marinelli interviewed with both the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks before choosing the Bears. He initially met with Smith on Jan. 2 and walked out of Halas Hall with a contract offer. His agent, Frank Bauer, indicated at the time that Marinelli wanted to look at other opportunities.

Former defensive line coach Brick Haley has left Chicago to pursue the same position at LSU.

Marinelli's hiring could lead ex-Lions defensive coordinator Joe Barry to the Bears as the linebackers coach. Barry is Marinelli's son-in-law. The Bears have an opening at the position after firing Lloyd Lee.

Bob Babich is expected to remain the Bears defensive coordinator.

Let's turn this defense around. After watching the Ravens/Titans game today, I'm more starved for defense like that from the Bears than ever.

Here is hoping we can get this defense turned around .I wont hold the Lions against him as coordinator simply because there are plenty of great coordinators around the league that failed as head coaches . I cant believe we didnt fire Babich but I get the feeling he has been demoted internally and that Marinelli will take over the coordinator duties by camp and Babich is back working with the linebackers .

One thing is for sure after all the offensive talk and now watching these playoffs I didnt realize just how badly our defense was this year until now . These playoffs defenses are playing at the line of scrimmage into the offensive backfield while it seemed the Bears played 5 yards off the line out to 20 yards downfield .We have got to do some major work on the D-line .

^Agree, I can see Babich getting fired midway through the season and then making Marinelli the DC. Why not just do it now? Lovie seems afraid to hurt his best friend's feelings.

Isn't it true that Marinelli isn't really interested in being a coordinator though? For as good of a defensive line coach as he proved to be in Tampa, Cliff Levingston is thinking that's right where he should be. Our defensive line needs a lot of help.

It happens all the time. Coordinators take a head coach job and simply don't have the chops for it. Cliff Levingston wouldn't even put a whole lot of blame on Marinelli for Detroit; his talent level outside of Calvin Johnson was absolute crap and that whole organization is just poor. Rod proved that he's an exceptional defensive line coach and that's where we'll put him which is outstanding news.

Another good example would be Cam Cameron. He was an outstanding offensive coordinator before getting his break in Miami last year. He sucked at being a head coach and went to Baltimore to be an offensive coordinator once again and is a big reason for their offensive success.

Lovie and Marinelli both tutored under Dungy at the same time .Lovie was the LB coach and Rod was the line coach . Dont forget the Bucs had Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator during this time as well. Babich joined Lovie when he went to the Rams as DC and Lovie taught him the scheme . Marinelli knows the cover 2 as well as Lovie so having Marinelli somehow under Babich would be a joke. Thats why Lovie takes over playcalling and Marinelli exerts his influence as the season goes on ultimately taking over completely.

Lovie left for the rams in 2000 and Dungy went to the Colts

Marinelli stayed as asst HC/Dline coach under Gruber and Kiffen and helped develop that crazy defense with that Sapp,Rice,Lynch,Nickerson,Brooks etc lol .

I just cant believe that Lovie would have him under Babich for any reason lol

So far all intensive purposes are we going into the season with Lovie being head coach AND defensive coordinator, Babich as LB coach and Marinelli as D-Line coach? Seems a bit strange to me.
