Apparently there's still interest in St. Clair...prob as a backup now.

Angelo: With Omiyale signed, Bears would still like St. Clair back
ByBrad Biggs

Although they made one of the first signings in free agency when they locked up Frank Omiyale to a four-year contract early Friday morning, the Bears still have interest in bringing back veteran offensive lineman John St. Clair.

At what price is the question.

"Yes, this has nothing to do with how we feel about John St. Clair,'' general manager Jerry Angelo said Friday afternoon in a teleconference discussing the signing of Omiyale, a 26-year-old who the team will likely look to fill the void at right tackle first.

"Really when you go into negotiations you can't tell the timetable of when you're going to get them dpne," Angelo said. "We would have liked to have gotten John St. Clair done first. This doesn't do anything for how we feel about John"

Omiyale is instantly in the mix to be the starting right tackle and putting him there would leave St. Clair without a starting position unless he is allowed to compete for a job inside, perhaps at left guard. St. Clair has made 19 consecutive starts for the Bears but they felt they were getting a younger player with upside in Omiyale.

The Bears made a three-year contract offer to St. Clair two weeks ago on Feb. 13. It hasn't changed. St. Clair's camp responded with a counter offer and the Bears didn't address it, choosing to let the player enter free agency. It is believed St. Clair has drawn interest from some AFC teams but his goal is to return to the Bears.

Omiyale's deal is worth between $11.5 million and $14 million with the player being able to max it out with play-time incentives. The deal also has $5 million guaranteed. It's clear the Bears have made upgrading the offensive line a priority, especially in light of the decision by 10-year veteran John Tait to retire. It's unclear how much of a priority St. Clair is at this point.

It could be St. Clair will shop for a deal and then give the Bears an opportunity to match it or improve on it, but that's not a sure thing at this point. The nice thing about St. Clair is he knows the offense, he has far more experience than Omiyale and he's versatile enough to play anywhere on the line.

Omiyale said St. Clair was the player he knew best on the Bears' roster. When asked if he was concerned he might have taken St. Clair's job, he said that's how it goes.

"That's football," Omiyale said. "I don't have any handle on that."

Stay tuned. We'll have more from the Angelo/Omiyale chat soon.

Well this is news. Apparently they like Omiyale at guard and want St. Clair back at right tackle. Why we'd want to start St. Clair again is beyond me - he should be depth only.

Jerry Angelo wants John St. Clair back; Omiyale at guard
By Vaughn McClure

Bears general manager Jerry Angelo made it clear that the signing of Frank Omiyale did not mean the team will stop pursuing John St. Clair.

"This has nothing to do with how we feel about John St. Clair," Angelo said Friday. "Really, when you go into negotiations, we can't determine the timetable on when we're going to get these deals done. ... We would have certainly liked to have gotten John St. Clair done first because we know John and feel real good about John."

St. Clair was offered a three-year deal but became an unrestricted free agent late Thursday night. With John Tait expected to retire, the Bears want to bring St. Clair back to start at right tackle. Chris Williams, last year's first-round pick, is expected to start at left tackle.

Angelo said Omiyale's immediate future is at guard. The team is not pleased with the performance of right guard Robert Garza, so Omiyale might have a chance to compete for a starting role there. If St. Clair doesn't re-sign, Omiyale could find himself starting at right tackle.

"We told him that we wanted to look at him at guard first,'' Angelo said of Omiyale. "But we're not going to limit him in terms of reps only at guard. ... We'll expose him to tackle, which is where he's been predominately playing. But we want to expose him to guard as well."

Angelo admitted Omiyale is not a household name but was impressed with Omiyale's play at the end of the season with Carolina, especially when lined up at tackle opposite New Orleans defensive end Will Smith.

As far as bringing in any other free agents, Angelo said he plans to monitor the situation, but the team won't jump to spend.

Start looking at every available free safety, Angelo. This should be your top priority right now.

I really like this move if they think this guy can be our starting right guard.Maybe the strategy is to resign St. Clair and draft a RT in the later rounds of day 1? That would be a RT that could be brought along behind St. Clair (continuing JA & Lovie's redshirt policy). I still feel if one of the stud OTs falls to us in the draft we'd grab him (ie Smith)

LT - Willliams (6'6" 312 lbs 23yrs)
LG - Beekman (6'2" 310 lbs 25yrs)
C - Kruetz (31)
RG - Omiyale (6'4" 310 lbs 26yrs)
RT - Smith (6'4" 332 lbs 22yrs) or RT Oher (6'4" 309 lbs 22yrs)

That would be a remarkable turnover in a less than 2 years and would set our line up for years to come. Young, mobile & beefy!

Jason Taylor was released yesterday by the Redskins. Anyone think Angelo will or should take a look at bringing him in? It looks like Taylor has no desire to participate in offseason drills, camps, activities, etc though.

IMO it doesn't seem like JT has any interest in being a football player anymore.

This is getting embarassing....our two best safety options seemed to be Darren Sharper and Jermaine Phillips. Phillips signed with the Bucs yesterday and the Trib's Vaughn McClure is reporting we have no interest in Sharper. WTF are we DOING ?!? Sounds like we're just waiting for the good ones to get snatched up before we go bottom feeding for some desperate unsigned schlub who'll play for the minimum. Or are we really expecting rookies to come in and win starting jobs at all the holes we have ??
