Bears sign safety Josh Bullocks
By Brad Biggson March 11, 2009 3:17 PMThe Bears have signed safety Josh Bullocks to a one-year contract, a league source said.

Bullocks gets $525,000 guaranteed, and will add depth to the secondary immediately.

The hope is that he can win the starting free safety job. Bullocks started his first three seasons in New Orelans.

He will be at the veteran minicamp next week and will begin competing with Craig Steltz, a fourth-round pick last year.

Now we've gone and busted the budget.

His lone pick last year was against the Bears so it allll makes sense now.

Can you imagine the discussion?

JA: Hey Lovie...I think we need a safety. Any thoughts.
Lovie: Man that guy on New Orleans who picked KO was just AWESOME. Did you see that pick! Boy I'd love to have a safety like that. Mike Brown didn't get any picks that game. We should cut him.

2008 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 61 | Key
Alert: None

Comment: Has good overall size and speed and adequate movements in coverage. He is usually upright in his pedal and turns but is usually under control. Shows average burst when making his flips, speed turns and transitions. Looks to be under control more than he does explosive. Has adequate foot quickness and balance to gain depth but doesn't consistently show smooth flip and acceleration. Did show good reaction to a crosser when playing halves, and has been making better reads lately and appears to be driving on the ball with more confidence. He does lack some burst from transition. Will often round his angle to the ball coming out of his pedal and will take a lateral step or an extra step before closing to the proper angle. At times he was caught sitting and losing leverage on vertical routes against play-action. Shows limited hand use playing off blocks against the run and looks to avoid contact using quickness. If engaged with TE will have trouble shedding quick. Can be sealed and moved while attempting to escape contact. Is willing to come up quickly in run support but is not always under control when he arrives. He's willing to throw his body around but is inconsistent providing good wrap on tackles. Tends to be a hitter more than a wrap tackler. Has some pop when he arrives, is agile enough to make adjustments in the alley and helps finish off piles. .

Hmmm .....why is your profile so different than the one posted in the Sun-Times blog comments?

Here is what Scouts Inc. had to say about Bullocks:

Bullock is a five-year veteran who has been a starter for all of the previous four seasons. He is a good-sized safety with good top-end speed with above-average quickness and agility in coverage. He is a little stiff in his pedal and tends to play erect, which causes him to miss some tackles in space. He builds to speed more than being explosive or immediate. He is a little stiff in the hips and comes out of his pedal in stages, which causes him to lose speed and relationship to receivers. He is not real direct, when transitioning to close on the pass and tends to round things off, but will show a decent burst to close on the ball, once he gets realigned. He shows good route awareness and can read the quarterback's eyes to get a jump on the ball, but is not a great ball hawk and often gets there after the catch. He is inconsistent wrapping up and often chooses to try and knock the ball carrier down, rather than wrap up and form tackle. He is willing in run support, but is not a real physical player unless he can hit on angles, rather than heads up. He is an adequate starter but does not stand out in any one phase of the game.

Talk about bargain basement.
A plea for post scoring is a plausible Bulls plan, but plainly isn't a priority. In response to a post player's dismay about his lack of points in the paint, Paxson said.... "I'm not nearly as concerned about the offensive stuff as he is."

Bullocks signing a safe call for Bears
Former Saints free safety brings range, size to competition for starting job vacated by Brown

March 12, 2009
BY BRAD BIGGS bbiggs@suntimes.com
The Bears might be without a right tackle when minicamp opens in five days, but they filled a hole in the secondary Wednesday by signing free safety Josh Bullocks.

He receives a one-year deal worth $1.2 million with $525,000 guaranteed, and he's expected to begin competing for the starting job when players take the field Tuesday at Halas Hall.

''I'm looking forward to getting in there and going to work,'' Bullocks said. ''I'm anxious to get out there on the field.''

A second-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2005, Bullocks followed ex-Bear Mike Brown at Nebraska, making a school-record 10 interceptions as a sophomore, and he'll have the chance to do the same thing in Chicago. The Bears needed a player to cover the deep post but faced a free-agent market with one marquee player at the position: 35-year-old Brian Dawkins.

Bullocks, whose twin, Daniel, plays for the Detroit Lions, turned 26 last month and has the size (6-1, 207) and range to make plays. He's expected to compete with Craig Steltz, who is probably best suited for strong safety, and perhaps a draft pick for the starting job.

The Bears have changed starting free safeties 16 times in five seasons under coach Lovie Smith, much of it a function of Brown's inability to stay healthy. The turnover at strong safety has been nearly as glaring with 14 changes.

Bullocks made an impact as a rookie with the Saints when he started 13 games under coach Jim Haslett, but he didn't progress as much under Sean Payton and was replaced by Kevin Kaesviharn last season on what was one of the league's worst pass defenses. A change of scenery and a move to the cover-2 scheme could help.

''If you've got a great defense and the guys up front are applying pressure to the quarterback like the Bears have been doing, and you've got good corners, it allows the free safety to go in and make plays and get interceptions,'' Bullocks said.

Bullocks has proved his durability, missing only two games in his four-year career and making 49 starts. After starting only six games last season, he views the one-year deal as the best way to work toward a more lucrative future.

''It gives me the opportunity to show what I can do and come back to the bargaining table the following year,'' he said.

To solve the issue at right tackle, the Bears remain in discussions about bringing back John St. Clair, who is believed to have interest from two other teams. With minicamp fast approaching, the situation is expected to be resolved soon.

One veteran lineman definitely won't be back as guard Terrence Metcalf requested and was granted his release. A third-round pick in 2002, Metcalf made 25 starts for the Bears. He signed a six-year, $12.2 million contract in 2006 and was expected to start at left guard last season before arthroscopic knee surgery in training camp opened the door for Josh Beekman.

Newly signed free agent Frank Omiyale is expected to take over at left guard. The Bears had hoped to carry Metcalf at least through training camp and the preseason, but they have more depth with veteran Dan Buenning and starting right guard Roberto Garza, so they allowed Metcalf to depart now to find a new team.

Well, look at it this way. It's a cheap, 1yr deal. We didn't have a free safety on the roster and free agency was full of strong safeties. We'll still draft a free safety next month regardless. This lets Steltz move back to strong safety and if Bullocks pans out he can get a raise next year. If he doesn't work out, the rookie slides in and we didn't lose that much.

I love this guy. He comes off the bus talking total utter nonsense. He's completely delusional. That's what you need in a safety I guess.

Chewie, I think my Bullocks profile is from a different year. I think its the profile heading into the 2008 season where the other one is post season. I got it off the insider report on ESPN.

Pretty good signing simply because we really needed another guy. I don't see him as a big play maker or a difference maker, more of a guy who will be there and hopefully not get beat deep. So, help me out, what is safety position looking like heading into the draft?

FS - Bullocks, Manning (more of a nickel player)
SS - Payne, Stelz

Am I missing anyone? Wow, we really need to draft a safety early.

There was no one else. They had to sign someone going into next week . I'm sure we will be drafting a Safety on day one.

I'm still hoping this guy does well in Lovie's cover two. At least better than Adam Archusucka

Don't be so sure - you and I want the Bears to go safety on Day 1 (hellooo Delmas!) but Angelo has a knack for holding off on the DBs until Day 2.

And those clips were tough to watch. Thomas Jones with the stiff arm! Taking some bad angles there...

If we go WR in the first round, I think we should go safety (Delmas/Moore please be there!) in the second round. However, it'll be hard to pass up a WR if we go OL in the first round so...should be interesting.

Bullocks < Cedric Benson/Thomas Jones. Kind of sad..

I agree NoSkyy, but after looking at the roster and recent draft picks, we are kind of crowded at CB with Tillman, Graham as starters Manning as the Nickle & Vasher trying for time as a starter. Just signed Marcus Hamilton (who may not stick). Add to that Trumain McBride & Zack Bowman (coming back from injury) and I wouldn't be surprised if JA & Lovie tried to convert someone like Bowman into a Safety.

As an aside....I'm ready to lose this sig.

You ready to end our wager, emp ?

We could either end it straight up or lay a wager on the Bulls/Sixers game. Winner gets to choose their own sig/avatar. Loser keeps their lousy sig/avatar.
