Bears Sign SS Glenn Earl - EDIT: OOPS NOT REALLY

Post#1 » by emperorjones » Sat Mar 21, 2009 7:49 pm

2008 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 59 | Key
Alert: None

Comment: Earl did not play last season after spending the year on injured reserve. He is an aggressive, young safety who has yet to play a full 16 game season over his career. He is a tough, competitive football player. He has good size and strength for the position. He has above-average instincts to diagnose. He is better versus the run than pass. He is a downhill box type player who can be effective versus the run. He has good physical traits as a tackler. He has the speed to run the alleys and does an effective job of maintaining leverage on the ball carrier. However, he does have a tendency to get out of position based on his overaggressive style as a player. He is more comfortable in short zones than deep zones. He has above-average zone awareness and reacts well to underneath throws. He has some functional play speed, but lacks the good top-end speed downfield in deep zones. He struggles to match up in man-to-man situations by allowing too much separation at break points with limited recovery speed. Overall, Earl is best suited to play strong safety, which means he is not suited to cover the deep middle or make plays on the ball.

Of course we all remember his last play...

This might turn out to be another good signing by JA. Two years is a long time to sit out, but the guy was having a good start to a career before being pummeled into submission by the great Cedric Benson

Another guy that's more effective versus the run.

Where are all the rangy ball-hawks this team really needs ?

I'm wondering if the Bears will even draft a safety this draft ??

Everything I have been reading says this is a weak draft for safeties.

The Bears will only keep 5 - 6 players at the position and already have ......

FS: J. Bullocks, D. Manning, Z. Bowman
SS: K. Payne, E. Stelz, G. Earl

Thought ???

Pretty much any of those guys could be cut without much of a cap casualty.

Bears will probably still look to address it, if they can.

Agreed. I think if one of the top 2 FS drops to them in the second round they could take them. I don't see them reaching in this draft for a safety. Next years draft is supposed to be loaded at safety as well. Bullocks, Bowman & Earl are all on one year deals. I would be surprised if all three made the team.

so we have the worst safeties in the nfl and the worst wide receivers in the nfl. we have the 25 ranked QB, a revamped below average offensive line, and a defensive line anchored by a player who is a shell of himself.

im feeling very optimistic about the upcoming season. really a trade for cutler at this point is about the only thing that would give me even a hint of excitement entering the season.
We have Martell Webster. He's called Kyle Korver here, and we shall love him and squeeze him and call him Ashton. -BrooklynBulls

C'mon, Clint....we've got an above average kicker and long snapper.

Focus on what's important for once.

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.
....

I have recently read on multiple Web sites that the Bears have signed safety Glenn Earl. However, I have not seen anything released on the official Web site. Can you confirm if this is correct or not?

I’ve seen the reports, too, but former Houston Texans safety Glenn Earl has not yet officially been signed by the Bears. If and when that occurs, we will post the news on ChicagoBears.com.

I wonder if we're waiting until after the draft?
