Should we go after Matt Jones?

Post#1 » by BullHeaded » Thu Jul 9, 2009 5:26 pm

At first blush I know it sounds bad, but there may be very little downside and a lot of potential upside to this.

1. He'd come cheap... face it, he's on his last strike. Also, with all of the signings and the deep draft for WRs... there aren't really that many suitors outside of Chicago.

2. He's still young... he could be the NFL version of the Birdman after his rehab. If so, we have a receiver with the perfect physical qualities to compliment what we have now.

3. He had a pretty decent year last year for only 12 games. 65 receptions? He was starting to break out. He has the size, speed and hands to be a major factor, especially if you have a qb who hits his spots (so he won't have to be the acrobat and catch the uncatchable).

4. I don't think there'd be any crying if he didn't start or if we gave the young receivers their opportunities. He should be happy to get whatever we give him.

All I know is... if we find a couple of gems between FA and the draft where that position isn't a write-off until next year, the sky is the limit for this club this year and next year we can swing for the fences in the offseason instead of patching up a glaring weakness.

I would be willing to give him an opportunity..... as it appears as though our interest in Burress is waning....so why not.

We could use some productive vet experience at the WR position to potentially take us to the next level.
A plea for post scoring is a plausible Bulls plan, but plainly isn't a priority. In response to a post player's dismay about his lack of points in the paint, Paxson said.... "I'm not nearly as concerned about the offensive stuff as he is."

Ehhh, I don't know. I guess giving him a very small contract and hoping he pans out wouldn't be that bad, although I don't really know that it's worth the hassle.

I've been preaching this for a while. I'd snatch him right up - his probation "violation" was drinking a beer on a golf course with friends.

I wouldn't mind him. He did well last year. He kind of rose from the pile of poop that Jacksonville had. After Garrard's bust out season in 07 he was suppose to take Jacksonville into serious contention, but he wasn't exactly up to par in 08, on top of that all his recievers were turds. Matt Jones came out of nowhere and thats with a QB putting up Ortonish numbers. If he has his head on straight he'd look good with Cutler.

Per wiretap:

Titans, Cowboys, Bears In Play For Matt Jones
15th September, 2009 - 4:29 pm

ESPN - Free agent wide receiver Matt Jones spoke with the Titans, Cowboys and Bears last week.

Adam Schefter of ESPN writes that "Jones is better than some receivers on rosters now. But the fact that he remains unsigned is an indication that teams are being ultra-careful about the players they sign and the people they bring in."

Hank Baskett was just released, why not go after him? He's a big receiver, 6'4, 220. Plus he's married to Kendra Wilkinson which is a plus.

Well, Playboy IS still headquartered in Chicago, isn't it ?

I'd still take Matt Jones over HB. I think Jones is still lingering out there as Jack Del Rio is bad-mouthing him to interested teams about his work habits, willingness to block, and locker room influence.

What would Baskett do for us? Some of the things we saw in Green Bay were bad, but that was probably the most un-friendly place to play a season opener for the young guys. Let them get back to Soldier Field with a healthy Aromashodu and see what happens in a friendly environment without the immense pressure of playing in Lambeau in the season opener on primetime TV.

But... Matt Jones wouldn't be a bad addition.
