CSN's John Mullin: Lovie Smith Will Return in 2010

CSNChicago.com has learned, in the strongest terms to date, that Lovie Smith indeed will be back as Bears coach in 2010.

That has been my take of the situation for some weeks before this. Now two highly placed individuals within the organization have separately indicated that there will not be a change at the top of the on-field org chart, due in some measure to the looming prospect of a strike/lockout. The same assurances were not there with respect to changes on the staffs for offense and defense.

Don’t look for any announcement one way or the other, by the way. Organizations typically do not issue statements that nothing is happening. But this is the first time that I’ve been able to find something close to “statement” on Smith’s future, which is now all but certain to be coaching the 2010 Chicago Bears.

In a Tribune article it says the last 3 games could determine his future.

The Bears will get crushed by the Ravens, they'll do okay against a resting Vikings but lose, and beat the Lions. Good enough for the McCheapskeys I guess.

If they keep Lovie and Angelo then the organization will climb the charts of stupidity level.

Bill Cowher is available. You cannot let this great chance slip away.

The Bears aren't cheap. Correct me if I'm wrong but Lovie is the 2nd highest paid coach in the league behind Jeff Fisher isn't he? Our salaries are in the upper 3rd. Problem is our money goes to the wrong places. As disgusted as I have become with Lovie "disco red challenge flag" Smith, I agree with not firing him this season. Why?

1. If you think Lovie should go, then JA needs to go. (I think both should go). I doubt this will happen this year. If you fire Lovie and not JA then JA picks the next coach & staff and nothing is solved.

2. A new coach would have no top draft picks to deal with and a free agent class that could be cut short by the uncapped year & tons of franchise & transitional tags. This would leave a new coach trying to implement a new system with JA & Lovies' Tampa Two crap and nothing to to about it. Leaving them with a sub-500 mess next year to tarnish whatever it is they try to do.

I think bringing in a new OC that doesn't try to fit Jay Cutler in a Kyle Orton hole and then firing Lovie & JA next season lets a new staff come in clean and decide if they want to keep whoever is working the offense with Cutler at that time.

I think a lot of us are underestimating how much money this would cost to rid of both Lovie and Angelo. Buy out both contracts, send assistants packing, then hire a new GM, coach and assistants. That's a helluva lot for any franchise to undergo, not just one that's careful with their money like this one. Especially when you consider how much money Cowher would command.

I think Lovie should return I have far more problems with Angelo than I do with Lovie right now . Lets see if he can right the ship and considering he was the first coach to even give us a sniff of a SB since Ditka we should ride him out one more year .

BUT

If we are still basically allow Angelo to be in charge we are gonna be screwed no matter what Lovie does . I just dont see Lovie having much input on some of the players that are brought in and then taking all the blame when he cant turn them into studs .

And given that there may be a lockout - during which you still have to pay all your coaches with no incoming revenue.

It was estimated at about 20 million bucks to clean house.

When faced with the apathy they're creating right now, it's probably a good business decision. It would take a looooong time to generate a half empty stadium, but it won't take much longer to start affecting the bottom line noticeably I wouldn't think.

Almost correct.

Lovie Smith is actually tied with Jeff Fisher as the highest paid NFL coach. Both are making 5.5 million a year. No idea how long Fisher's contract runs though.
