This is just a thought after reading Icness' "Rules of Thumb" in the wiretap. It definitely seems like the Panthers are writing off this year so it makes Cliff Levingston wonder if acquiring Steve Smith would be possible. He plugs a big hole we've got in a big way. Even though we don't have a whole lot to offer (maybe our 3rd this year and 2nd next year?) it might we worth looking into.
Thoughts? Is Cliff Levingston just spinning his wheels here?

Re: Steve Smith?
While he would be an upgrade I don't think he's the ideal #1 guy we're looking for. He'll be 31 come the season and is 5'9. We already have so many speedy small guys it just seems a bit redundant to add another one who is on the downside of his career as it is already. If we could get him for peanuts it would certainly be an upgrade but I just don't see it happening.

Steve Smith had a pretty good year last year with Jake Delhomme having an awful season. I still think he has a year or two left.

I'd be all for it if the price is right. He plays so much bigger than his height.
Turn down for what?

I'd give him a shot. But def not worth a future first or second.
Call me silly but I really like Owens. Here's hoping nobody signs him and we give him a 1 year filled with incentives contract. Hey if it doesn't work, at least it would be fun to watch!

I agree with your post and would give Smith a chance also. I still remember when he was a one man wrecking crew against us in the playoffs a few years back.
In terms of sacrificing 1st or 2nd round pick, I would say no also, but yes to Brandon Marshall.
I would not mind bringing in TO either. He would bring some fun, excitement and pizazz.
Since this regime is in a win now mode, a bold move to bring in a legit seasoned #1 WR would seal the deal for me.
A plea for post scoring is a plausible Bulls plan, but plainly isn't a priority. In response to a post player's dismay about his lack of points in the paint, Paxson said.... "I'm not nearly as concerned about the offensive stuff as he is."

Re: Steve Smith?
Antonio Bryant is probably the most feasible right now after all the money we've spent but Cincy is looking hard at him and he might be asking for more than were willing to pony up after the spending spree we just went on. While he isn't in the same league as Marshall or Smith I just don't see us trading any top draft picks in the top 3-4 rounds which would certainly need to be included to get either of those players.

Re: Steve Smith?
Bryant just signed with Cincinnati. As far as Steve Smith goes, maybe a 2nd next year is pushing it, but Cliff Levingston would do our 3rd this year and maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder next year. Just because he's 31 doesn't mean he can't play. We've got to find guys who can play right now regardless of their age.

I would do that in a heart beat. Our 3rd rounders always crap out anyways.
But back to my point on T.O. not only would he give us a legit #1 WR, he'll also distract alot of media attention away from Cutler and our young receiving core. Which I think may be helpful. IF he doesn't pan out and is a complete locker room headcase.. then cut him.
Has anyone heard if the Bears are still spending? Been awfully quiet since the big 2.5

Ditto.
Personally I like Shug's idea of T.O.
