Bears release Vasher

So much for the Bears taking veteran Nathan Vasher to training camp to see if they finally could get a return on the rich contract they gave him in the summer of 2007.

Less than 24 hours after signing veteran cornerback Tim Jennings to a two-year contract, the Bears bid goodbye Wednesday to the player coach Lovie Smith dubbed "The Interceptor" when he burst onto the scene with 13 interceptions in his first two seasons.

The former fourth-round draft pick from Texas became a starter midway through his rookie season in 2004 and was a Pro Bowler the next year when he made a team-high eight interceptions for one of the best defenses in the NFL. But after the 2006 Super Bowl season, Vasher's play dipped dramatically. Not before the popular teammate had cashed in with a $28 million, five-year extension.

Vasher, 28, earned the bulk of that money in 2007 and 2008 when injuries limited him to only 12 games. A groin muscle tear in 2007 in Week 3 vs. Dallas ruined that season. He required wrist surgery the next season. Vasher had bulked up to play the run better and lost some of his quickness. Later, he lost his confidence.

God Speed Vash. I enjoyed watching you play your first few years in the league but you've been pretty worthless since the Super Bowl. I was sad to see how dramatically his play dipped these past few years, albeit, he wasn't healthy the entire time. I don't really see how this 5'8 guy from Indy we just signed is going to be any better than Nate but he is certainly millions cheaper and hopefully will allow us to fill another gap elsewhere as paying Nate the big bucks to be a backup makes no sense. I'm sure he'll get picked up elsewhere in no time to be a nickel or dime back.

This is kind of bitter sweet for me. He was such a good DB with so much potential but he just fell off the map.

The NFL is all about what you've done for me lately, and Nate simply has done sh*t lately. Good luck Nate, but good move by the bears.

Again?

Great example of a guy not handling a new contract. Put on weight right after the deal. Lost his quickness and that was all she wrote.

I got his jersey for Christmas a few years back. He then proceeded to fall off the planet.

So you don't want my Jalen Rose or Kendall Gill (Seattle, to be fair--so better days) jerseys?

I also had a Curtis Conway jersey, but I tore the nameplate off of it so I could just wear it as a generic Bears jersey.
