Re: 2011 Bears Draft Thread
Should've been Sherrod for a LT. Carimi fits the Bears prerequisites, huge body-hard worker-plays in the midwest. Sherrod was the better fit overall. We NEEEEEEED a LT.

Sherrod is Chris Williams 2.0.

Re: 2011 Bears Draft Thread
So there is controversy regarding Aneglo's gaff with the trade up with Ravens which fell through. Baltimore is asking league to make Chicago give them the 4th rounder that was supposed to be a part of the deal. David Haugh says the Bears should give it up to protect their reputation in dealing with other teams.

Re: 2011 Bears Draft Thread
The Ravens were looking for an OL. They spent time with Sherrod and a lot of people had him as their pick. They ended up giong CB so it left the Bears with a decision between Sherrod and Carimi, which is what they wanted. I thought Carimi would end up with GB and become the home town favorite playing for Wisconsin and growing up as a huge huge Packer fan.
Anybody hear the quote Carimi said after the draft. He earned some brownie points from me.

Garbage.
In the end, teams only care about themselves. If we have someone or a pick that a team REALLY wants, they will trade with us. All this means is that we won't be dealing with Baltimore anymore. Big whoop. Besides, we did them a favor. We let them draft the player they want a pick later. They saved money. They can bitch all they want, but hopefully Angelo doesn't give them ****.

Angelo won't give them anything. Angelo loves the late picks and I'm sure he has something good in mind in the 4th round.

Ravens were in a similar situation back in 2003 with the Vikings, so they can quit their yapping.

RT @espn_nfcwest: Bears trade up and take Stephen Paea, DT from Oregon State.

How about a center? I wouldn't mind a backup/future replacement for Olin.

Carimi on being a Packers fan (formerly) :
"I was growing up, but I've had my errors in my way. I've sinned and repented, so I'm good now. I've seen the light."

I'm very happy with the 1st 2 picks, and the one position I trust Lovie & Angelo to spot unknown talent is at Safety (except for Archeleta of course - but he was not unknown). So the first 3 rounds I give the Bears a B+
After that its a crap shoot. I would have liked to see Tice get his hands on a guard in the 5th round, but I guess snagging Webb last year & Carimi this year is enough. Tice has got to find one freakin' guy out of Williams, Louis, Johnson, Asiata & Williams that can step up & play guard.

Al Afalava, Craig Steltz, Kevin Payne, Todd Johnson, and Bobby Gray say hi.

Re: 2011 Bears Draft Thread
Al Afalava - 6th round pick
Craig Steltz - 4th Round pick
Kevin Payne - 5th round pick
Todd Johnson - 4th round pick, played 7 years
Bobby Gray - 5th round pick
I think something was up with Afalava. Something non-football related. He went from 14 game or so starter as a rookie to off the team in one offseason. That's very strange. He's on the Colts now. Still in the league as a 6th round pick.
Steltz is a good backup - which is fine for where he was drafted. Kevin Payne was slotted at free safety and was obviously a SS. They can spot talent but don't always put it in the right spots.
Basically, 4th-7th round picks are backups on average unless you get really lucky IMO. So each of those guys confirms my view. They identified players that gave them more value on average than they should have - or at least equal value.
For Lovie & JA to reach for a Safety this high for the 2nd time? I trust them enough at that position to feel confident that he will be our future FS and Major Wright will be moved to SS.

Re: 2011 Bears Draft Thread
OK - I suppose you can say they were good at finding special teams contributors with their safety picks, how about that? You'd think JA would hit with one of those late round guys, though.
Yeah, I had high hopes for Afalava, too. His release caught me off guard coming off a decent rookie season. Not sure if it was non-football related or if he just flat-out got caught in a numbers game and got beat out by better players. If you're not starting for the Bears, you better be good on special teams and maybe that's what bit Al. He wasn't going to start and other players were better on ST. Had no idea he was on the Colts.
Conte's my one head scratcher of the draft and I base that purely on multiple reports saying it was a reach and the fact he looks like John Mangum and not Troy Polamalu. I would NEVER give Angelo the benefit of the doubt with his record.

Agree on most points, except this. I wouldn't call the position settled when Manning is a free agent. What kind of deal could he get with the cba up in the air? Bears, like a lot of teams, may choose to not dole out any long term deals.
charity stripe is right.
