I see KC is mulling over whether to put in a claim on Orton. Orton reportedly threatening not to report if they do.

Per Shefter tweet Orton has been claimed by a team that is not Chicago

Unfortunate, but hopefully it won't matter in the end.

Still better than backing up Tebow though right? He gets paid and doesn't have a media tool taking away his snaps.

I'm happy that we didn't pick up Orton. As others have pointed out, Martz system is too complex for a QB with no familiarity to that system to come in and make a big difference right now. Hanie is our best option right now & McCown is a good pickup because of his familiarity with the system. Our Defense & running game will make the difference for the remainder of this regular season. If those two elements step up, we'll make the playoffs.

In his time under Martz, McCown registered just two stats = he caught two balls.

Ooooook

McCown is such a bum. I'll be hoping Hanie stays healthy.

I'm not sure what else you guys want from a back-up QB. He sure as hell beats our other option of Nathan Enderle, IMHO.

McCown's experience appealed to Martz.

"The value for us that I saw is that he's very familiar with what we do," Martz said. "He's not a guy that has to come in and learn the system, learn the numbers, learn the system, learn the route trees and stuff. He's been through that, so he gives us a guy who can go right in there and play."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 47 games with 31 starts in the NFL, McCown passed for 6,584 yards with 35 touchdowns and 40 interceptions, in addition to a career passer rating of 71.3.

Furthermore, Orton/McCown/Hanie is a good debate for next off-season's back-up QB. I'm looking at the present QB situation. All that concerns me is a QB that gives the Bears their best chance to make the playoffs, then Cutler (hopefully without being too rusty) returns as the QB that leads us to a Superbowl victory THIS season.

Return to Chicago Bears
