Jimmy Raye didn't get a lot of love from JD because the Chargers great drafts slowed down after another Charger personnel guy (sorry, forgot the name) left the organization. Whispers out of San Diego say that the other guy had the golden touch, not Raye.

Licht left the Cardinals & jumped shipped to the Patriots because Arizona was slow in giving him a contract. The only real knock that JD has heard is that Licht wasn't in the room during Drafting because Bellichik only trusts a couple of guys around him. JD didn't like that he reportedly hasn't had to make any final decisions, which IMO, is no big deal.

JD is high on Ross because he's in Coughlin's close circle & supposedly he's a work-a-holic. I missed some of JD's opinion on Ross & Emery.

Only part that I was able to catch about Emery was that he's crossed paths with Russert.

Sorry, but my cell kept ringing during some of the discussion.

Thanks, Biggie.

The more I read, the more I get the vibe that Ross could be the guy.

Is it possible that the Bears are aiming to make multiple personnel hires?

Maybe hire Ross as the GM & bring Licht in as his #2 or some other combination.

Getting a GM in place before Senior Bowl week (next week) is imperative. That unofficially serves as the coaching clearing house and scouting mecca; every unemployed coach is there begging for jobs, and it's the one place where scouts and coaches from opposign teams intermingle and (mostly) freely share opinions. It's also where a lot of trade talks get thrown around, not seriously but more of the "what are you planning on doing with player X" talks.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

Emery & Licht made it to the next round.
The Chicago Bears will conduct a second round of interviews this week with two candidates for general manager, the team announced.

Kansas City Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery and New England Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht will return for second interviews.

The Bears denied multiple reports on Monday that a decision has been made to hire Emery as GM.

"A decision has not been made," a team source said Monday afternoon.

Emery, however, is believed to be a strong candidate for the job, given his previous role as an area scout for the Bears from 1998-2004, plus a solid overall college scouting background.

Hey probably my bottom two candidates. Licht might be okay, but I think they'd need to make another hire to give him a strong draft guy to help him run the college side seeing as Licht hasn't even been in the draft room with the Pats.

My hope is that Licht was a "silent" draft genius that gave great ideas which were adopted by Belichek, yet Belichek's ego wanted all the credit for himself & blocked Licht from the Patriots draft room :D .

Really thought Ross would be the guy and I never gave Raye a shot.

One would think Emery is the guy at this point based on everything I've read. Would be nice to get this done and move on. We are nothing if not plodding and methodical compared to other teams.

The REAL good news here is Ruskell is out of the running.

Those who understand the power structure in New England are adamant that Licht is a valued member of the front office who is involved in New England's personnel decisions, to an extent. That's because it's widely known Belichick has final say in all matters, and on draft day, only wants a select few bodies in the war room to limit distractions. Besides, according to sources, Licht's input on the draft is given before the event actually begins, so his actual presence in the Patriots’ war room during the draft isn't required by Belichick, who again, makes all the calls in New England.

For those advocating for Licht - just how good have the NE drafts been the last few years?

Sure they have gotten a crap load of picks - but what have they done with them? I don't know the NE draft all that well - but aside from striking TE gold in 2010 - what have they gotten out of all of those picks?

No they haven't, they have dreadful in picking defensive players and wide receivers in general. I'm not sure what level of influence Belichick has on personnel decisions but I assume a great deal. Still no excuse for the picks.

Yes - and they win in spite of their drafting.

If the Bears had the best coach and the best QB in the NFL - then maybe we wouldn't need to be too concerned with our GM's performance in the draft - NE has no problem overlooking it because Belichick is in charge of everything there. No such luck in Chicago.

Hey, you could be right. Maybe I'm hoping that some of their magic rubs off on us. I admittedly don't know too much about neither of the finalists, except what I've read.

It's between two candidates now & it's up to the Bears brain-trust to choose correctly.

Well, heck, just looking at the last 3 years I think the Pats have drafted just fine. They're always drafting late but they still make good picks. Just scanning the list over the last 3 years: Solder - a solid starting LT, McCourty whose 9 picks in 2 years would be tops on the Bears, Pat Chung who's better than any safety on our roster, and the 2 aforementioned TEs (Gronk + Hernandez) that are top 5 players at their position.

I'm not an expert on the Pats roster but those are the names that stick out. It's still a mystery as to what Licht had to do with any of these guys, though, so it's hard to be firmly in his corner. The only thing I've read definitively is he was responsible for bringing in Danny Woodhead. Okaaayyyy....he's a decent piece to an already Super Bowl ready team but I need to hear more than that. I guess if you really want to be fair, you'd want to see what the Cards and Eagles did while he was with them.

After looking over the last 3 years of Chiefs drafts, a better question might be what the hell has Phil Emery done? He apparently runs all the draft meetings so I assume he's actually allowed in the draft room but the drafts aren't pretty at all outside of maybe Eric Berry. How's Tyson Jackson - the 3rd pick in the entire 2009 draft - been working out for them? 2 sacks in 31 starts. Yuck.

Don't look at me - I voted for Ross.

-- The Chicago Bears and director of player personnel Tim Ruskell have "mutually agreed to part ways," the team announced on Monday.
