Time For A Brand New Stadium

Post#1 » by BIGGIEsmalls 23 » Sun Feb 5, 2012 4:09 am

With the 2014 Super Bowl scheduled to be played outdoors in cold-weather New Jersey, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell fielded a question Friday about Chicago's prospects to host the event.

"Chicago is a great community," Goodell said at his annual Super Bowl press conference. "I hear it from my wife every day, by the way, but as far as football fans are concerned, there is no greater passion in Chicago. There are a number of issues that go into playing a Super Bowl. It’s not just the stadium. It’s clearly the number of hotel rooms, the other infrastructure, all of which I presume that Chicago would meet.

"If they’re interested, we certainly will meet with them and discuss the ability to do that.”

But given the Bears current stadium situation, Chicago's odds to land a Super Bowl might be slim. Soldier Field's seating capacity of 61,500 is the smallest in the NFL. And all of the recent Super Bowls awarded to cold-weather cities (Detroit, Indianapolis, New York/New Jersey) have been or will be played in new, state of the art stadiums.

This is a world-class city with a storied franchise, yet we play in the smallest NFL stadium with the worst field conditions. We're not even worthy of a SuperBowl.

Why can't the Chicago Bears have a new state of the art stadium?

Could have had a retractable roof stadium with 80,000 capacity if Ted Phillips hadn't allowed the Park District to bend him over a table and ram a terrible Soldier Field renovation deal up his ass.

Graphic for emphasis's sake.

I always thought that renovating Soldier Field was a bad idea. I would have preferred that they built something brand new in the same area that they planned out for the Olympic village.

Chicago politics suck.

I second this. We need more people to make it competitive.

Seemed like such a no-brainer to try to fund a retractable roof state of the art stadium with more seating capacity. I would never want to the roof to be used, mind you, for Bears' home games but the plan to renovate Soldier Field was just awful and short-sighted.

What do you expect though? Were we the last stadium to get a Jumbotron? Always fun to live in a major market but be treated like you reside in Podunk, Iowa.
Turn down for what?

Sorry, I couldn't be there. This was the first time in the last 11 or 12 years that I've missed the superbowl. A damn flu is really annoying!

BeKuK, it's a different type of superbowl game.

Click on the link above. It will tell you the rules. Basically, all of the Bears posters are taking over the GM job for the Chicago Bears. We cut, waive, & re-sign our own players. Then we sign free-agents. Then we draft players. Check it out buddy. It's kinda fun :D .

*BUMP*

There was new info today regarding a possible Super Bowl in Chicago.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel spoke Thursday about the possibility of Soldier Field hosting a Super Bowl.

The NFL will hold the Super Bowl in MetLife Stadium, an open-air stadium, in New Jersey in 2014, and could host future games at cold-weather sites.

"We did speak about this earlier," Goodell said during a news conference to honor Soldier Field as the first NFL stadium certified by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). "As you know, we are hosting a Super Bowl in New York in an open-air stadium in 2014, and we're excited about that. We think it's going to be a great thing for our fans, and a great thing for New York.

"I think if we can do it successfully there, I think that opens up doors where we'll be looking at. Obviously, you know how to host great events. ... And you got a great stadium."

Emanuel touted Chicago being the recent host of the NATO Summit as proof of its ability to host a large event like the Super Bowl.

Interesting. I presume wherever the NATO Summit was held there was an appropriate max capacity. Not so with Soldier Field for the Super Bowl, unfortunately.

True.

New York's stadium holds over 80K, while we can only hold a little over 60k.
