Grading the Super Bowl game.

Post#1 » by emperorjones » Sun Mar 25, 2012 3:31 pm

So I hope you guys think this is cool, because I do.

In trying to come up with a good way to grade this game, I reached out to an old law school friend who is one of the top sports agents in the country. He represents all-star caliber players in the NBA, a few GMs, coaches & has relationships with all the team presidents.

I had a list of things that I felt were important in evaluating a GMs performance. But what does the emperor know as a fan right? Well, my friend was nice enough to review the list with a big market team president to see what he felt was most important in grading a GM in a market like Chicago off my list and ranked them for us. They are in order:

1. Talent Evaluation
2. Cap Management
3. Team Chemistry (keeping the locker room happy)
4. Winning Now vs Future
5. Keeping the fans & media happy.

So now we have a way to grade this thing.

1. Talent Evaluation
We will look at the ratings of players added and players lost in FA. The overall +\- will be your score for this part

2. Cap Management
This one is more subjective & thus will be puts to a vote from each player grading the others. Did you spend all your money? Are you capped out and unable to sign players to extensions? Have you considered next year's cap?

3. Team Chemistry (keeping the locker room happy)
Also a voting item. Were you loyal to your veterans? Is Briggs holding out on you? Did you sign Forte? Did you cut your long time vets?

4. Winning Now vs Future
Again another voting item. How have you positioned the team moving forward vs winning now. For this one, winning now was more important but Cap management was still more critical.

So at the conclusion of the draft, the participants will evaluate each other with a letter grade A-F. These grades will be weighted against the talent evaluation ranking. The top three scores will be used and then I will post on the Bulls board (hopefully they allow it :) ) asking for posters to come over here and pick from the Final three which will represent:

5. Keeping the fans & media happy

Grading will start after the review threads have been open long enough to get sufficient views/comments - its the offseason and a slow time so it might be a bit.

That's cool.

I will actually try to comment in every "GM's" thread once I get some free time.

Yes, game is over unless you have money you'd like to use on a veteran minimum.
I'm leaving the posts up for a while, then will open voting. First I'm going to have the 6 GMs vote. That will cut the field down to 3. Then I'm going to open the voting for everyone else and hopefully get a post on the Bulls board to see what the more casual fan thinks.

How the hell do you have so much money left after trading for Marshall AND signing Mario!?! :x

You have $1.165 Million left...so the vet minimum is set at $1.17 Million

In reality, it varies based on how many years a player has been in the league, so you can sign players for whatever the vet minimum they sign for in real life regardless of their star rating on Walterfootball.com. For example, you can sign Bears guard Chilo Rachal for $540,000.

Got a quick question. What if they are still unsigned?

I don't have a "real life" number to put on them. So, should I use these figures that were provided on WIKI:

For the 2012 season, minimum NFL base salaries are ...

1) Rookie - $390,000
2) 1 year - $465,000
3) 2 year - $540,000
4) 3 year - $615,000
5) 4-6 year - $700,000
6) 7-9 year - $825,000
7) 10+ year - $925,000

Sorry Biggie, if they are still unsigned you have to stick with the star rating and salary structure from round 2 in free agency. So they need to sign before we start voting. I'd like to start voting soon.

Well, I was just trying a slick move there  .

I was hoping that I could pull a fast one on you (Mr. Goodell) because thats what good GMs do :D .

Just a quick note. Its come to my attention that Matt Forte's decision to report or hold out will have an effect on some votes in this game. Makes sense. So voting will start when camp opens in about 2 weeks.

In another note...CAMP OPENS IN 2 WEEKS! (more or less)
