Brian Urlacher Injury thread.

Honestly im not too worried about it if the Bears treat it carefully. If anyone can afford to miss practices its him.

If they keep him totally inactive for a week to subside the swelling, im ok with that.

I was going to start this same thread but from a different angle.

I think this situation has surgery written all over it. Last week when he disappeared for "personal" reasons, I'm sure he went to see a specialist. My question is how bad will the defense be without him as I'm worried he's going to get scoped to remove scar tissue and will miss 6-8 weeks. I so hope I'm wrong.

You called it correctly, Emp.

BOURBONNAIS – Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday morning but the goal is still for him to play in season opener on Sept. 9 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Urlacher, who injured his PCL and MCL on a collision with safety Major Wright in the season finale, didn’t participate in any of the offseason program. He practiced at the start of training camp. But he hasn’t practiced since July 31 because of swelling in his left knee.

.............................................

Players can recover from scopes in two weeks.

Totally agree. He hurt that knee orginally at the begining of January and basically took the entire offseason off and now after two weeks of training camp he's already going in for a scope, doesn't sound good to me.

I don't fault Urlacher for not having surgery at the end of the season last year when all indications were that rehab would be fine. And he did rehab throughout the summer.

The concern that arises is that the injury was re-aggravated when he made cuts. Sideways movements. Moves that a middle linebacker is required to do to be effective, especially in a cover-2. Will he be back for Week 1? No one can say for certainty. But how effective will a 34-year-old linebacker in a contract year be when he can't make normal MLB plays without worry that his knee will blow up like a balloon?

Everyone's focusing on the short-term aspect of this, which is understandable. I think you can easily question why the team and Urlacher waited a week and shrouded everything in secret before finally getting the scope. But the long-term aspect of this is more concerning to me. How effective will he be in a Week 2 game in Green Bay just four days after Week 1, a vital early season game? This team NEEDS Urlacher to be good at his job to be a good team.

This could very well be the first domino that falls in the end of this Bears defense, even if he plays against the Colts.

The 3/4 defense should be here by next season without BU in top form. Shea will be playing his natural position, hes perfect for it. Don't know how Rod and Lovie feel about it but they can go too if they cant handle the truth. I feel like Phil Emery has brought some stone cold sober perspective to the team. And cutting edge.

Should we give shawne merriman a look? He doesn't really fit the system but Lovie and Rod might be able to work with him. He'll add depth and he might turn out to be good again. If he does turn out to be good this season we could have the best LB corp when Urlacher gets back. Also he shouldn't be very expensive, so we can't really lose on this deal.

No. Ever since he got hurt, he's been pretty terrible. Just like our old friend Tommie Harris.

The 3-4 defense isn't a panacea or anything. Look at the Giant: 4-3 defense and they won the Superbowl. It's all about talent and scheme. Give the Bears' coaching staff some credit for venturing further away from the Cover 2. They played some man last year, plenty of Cover 1 and Cover 3, etc.

*BUMP*

Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher admitted Thursday that he's been somewhat of a spectator during his team's strong start, but he maintained he could return to an All-Pro level despite a knee injury that he said will never heal.

"My PCL is torn," Urlacher said on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "Of course it's never going to be the same when you have a torn PCL. But that's the ligament you don't need, I guess. It feels different in there, but there's no doubt in my mind I'll be able to be an impact player again. I just have to keep getting better, like I said.

Urlacher sprained -- which by definition means stretching or tearing -- his PCL in last season's finale. He had the knee scoped in the offseason, and there were reports he underwent other procedures.

This is all Lovie's fault  .

Good thing Briggs has stepped up this season.

Wouldn't it be better to sit him a few games to help him heal some to at least give him a chance of moving like he used to? The defense can afford it, they've been playing great without his all-star performances so far.

Yea sure, but winning that Vikings game and dropping 6+ spots in the draft made it all worthwhile. :nonono:

That's just frustrating. I don't remember but was it the Vikings game when he first injured himself? Or did he reaggrivate the injury then?

It was the Viking game, which was the final game of the season. We were already eliminated from playoff contention, yet Lovie had all of our stars playing in a meaningless game. Like Emp pointed out, it also screwed our draft position because we won the stinking game.

I don't know if rest will help. Like Urlacher said in the interview, it will never fully heal anyway.

It was hard to lose to he Vikings last year. Urlacher is old and our defense is changing. Hopefully we infuse new talent. Shea's spin move is nice but we need more. Our secondary looks good though.

Rest definitely isn't what he needs. Urlacher has looked better as the season has gone on every week. I think that has to do with the fact that the first 3-4 games were his training camp/pre-season. He's not getting his game legs under him. Rest will only slow that process.

Im ok with Brian not testing his knee between the 40s. There has been a lot made of him not making a tackle on a Jones drew long run. 20 yards.

Basically the Bears run D is coagulated. Middle linebackers are a big part of a stout run d. Id basically trade a few negligible run plays now, for Brians health and longevity towards the end of the season.

Return to Chicago Bears
