Lots of baggage on him. Surprise the Bears are willing to take a chance.

1 Year $900,000 contract.
$1.75 million with incentives.

if he stays away from banned substances, and mind altering substances, we improved our MLB position for less money.

He's a good to great linebacker who's had major character issues, especially lately. Had a couple DUI's in previous season. Last year violated drug policy and ended up missing 9 games. Quite a roll of the dice by Emery. Low risk in that his contract is heavily performance-based. Ended up getting him for less than they offered Urlacher.

Eve if D.J. hits all his incentives as well. That's sweet.

Nice signing. DJ has talent and we could use plenty of that after losing both Urlacher and Roach.

Don't know much about the guy, but hopefully he doesn't become a trainwreck of off the field issues. At least we addressed the position so we don't have to use a first rounder on teo or ogletree.

I like the signing. It's cheap, he's had pretty good years (most tackles in 07), and it helps our LB core.

I'm hoping that last year was just a very down year for him, and that he's hoping to re-establish himself this year.

There has to be something he said to Emery to make him believe that he's a changed man from the substance abuse he was suffering last year.

And he'll be playing for a longer contract, so that's always a plus. If his mindset is to play for a bigger contract, he could easily replace the production that Urlacher/Roach was giving us and probably more.

This also gives us time to get a young rookie LB and give him the time he needs to develop.

Good pickup. Hopefully he doesnt do anything stupid tbis year. I still anticipate the Bears using one of their top three picks on a LB. This probably makes it more likely we trade down unless an absolute steal is there at 20.

This is a downgrade from urlacher. and we lose continuity in the process.

4 years ago this would be true, since this is 2013, no, it really isn't.

No risk signing with really good upside. No risk as $ isn't due until Sept and a lot of it is incentives.

So he can be cut before september to no or little cap hit? In that case it is a worthwhile signing.

I loved this guy coming out of Miami... long time ago and pretty irrelevant now, but figured I'd mention it anyway. I wonder how close he was with Jay and Marshall... maybe they'll help keep him on track a bit.

It's a downgrade from prime Urlacher. Prime Urlacher doesn't exist any more.
