Bears make coaching changes

The Bears have fired DL coach Phair and LB coach Tibesar. The remainder of the staff will remain intact.

"We believe Mel is the right person to lead our defensive unit," Trestman said. "He fully understands where we need to improve, has the skill set and leadership to oversee the changes that need to be made and to execute our plan to get the results we know are necessary."

Here's my cynical take...

The decision to let go of Phair and Tibesar may have come down to the personnel people blaming Shea McClellin, Jon Bostic and Khaseem Greene's lack of development on the coaching rather than the players themselves. Keeping Mel Tucker may reflect the personnel opinion that they expect things could get a little worse before they get better on defense and they don't want the next guy to take the hit. I've been a big supporter of the front office until now... but this reeks of them covering their own assets.

Could also be another signal towards a hybrid approach and they'll be looking at DL and LB coaches with a little different background. Plus SOMEBODY had to get the ax, even if it was a position coach.

Really wished we could have grabbed someone else but I will reserve judgement until I actually see how the defense plays.

Obviously something kept him here. If he can't turn it around with another season here and some fresh new faces he's obviously gone.

I said it before the season mel tucker sucks and PhIl messed this all up by being and ego manaic. he didn't bring in depth and short changed people like brian urlacher and others to force them out.

I'm telling ya that he sucks. he sucked in cleveland and with jacksonville and he was officially the worst last year.
I do not care how good our offense is if we skimp on the cash for the defense we are going to miss playoffs yearly.
This is bad real bad.

Captain Green you are right in the money. This is an epic fail on the Bears part. Tucker has no track record of success or players that have blossomed with his defenses.

Paul Pasqualoni as defensive line coach and Reggie Herring as linebackers coach.

Pasqualoni, 64, is a long-time college coach who has six years of NFL experience. He served as Dolphins defensive coordinator in 2008-09 and was promoted by the Cowboys from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator midway through the 2010 season after Wade Phillips was fired.

Pasqualoni served as Syracuse's head coach from 1991-2004, compiling a 107-59-1 record and winning four Big East titles. He entered the NFL as a position coach with the Cowboys, working with tight ends (2005) and linebackers (2006-07).

Pasqualoni spent the last three seasons as head coach at the University of Connecticut, where he amassed a 10-18 mark.

Herring, 54, joins the Bears after spending the last six seasons as a linebackers coach with the Cowboys (2008-10) and Texans (2011-13). He also had a prior stint as linebackers coach with the Texans in 2002-03.

Herring also has 24 years of experience as a college assistant at Oklahoma State (1982-85), Auburn (1986-91), TCU (1992-93), Clemson (1994-2001), North Carolina State (2004) and Arkansas (2005-07).

Pasqualoni and Herring both worked on the same Cowboys staff as Bears special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis and running backs coach Skip Peete in 2010, while Herring served on the same Texans staff as Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke in 2002-03.

So if Tucker fails again, we're just going to go get Wade Phillips and go full 3-4 then right?

Another new hire... this one is a "think different" move. We hired a Tae Kwon Do expert to help teach proper hand techniques for blocking and escaping blocks. I always wondered why we don't see NFL teams importing Sumo wrestlers as offensive linemen or importing the coaches... it seems very transferable. But this is pretty cool. TKD is all about maximizing power which is a nice edge to have in the trenches.
