Re: College Prospects (Bears Draft)
Id rather not trade down that far. We don't need 6 players as much as we need a few more impact players. FA depth will have to fill the rest. I hope their aggressive to trade up in the second. I think there's a slew of DL who could fall and be great values but well probably have to part with a 4th or 5th. I guess if you still have a few guys on the board at 14 you can trade down a few spots, but let's maximize our chance at impact defenders

Bailey and skov are still on the board. They should be out selections if they are there.

Bears just drafted a punter. Pat O'Donnell, Miami.
For a 6th, he damn well better be better than Podlesh.

I can't believe we went with a punter. With all these 2nd round talent at LB we went with a punter.

Hopefully someone of these guys drop to us in the 7th and go undrafted and we sign them.

Podlesh was so awful, there were times I wished Joe DeCamillis would just go out into the stands and find anybody out there in the crowd to just go out there and put on Podlesh's jersey and punt the football on the next stalled drive.

I don't agree with drafting a punter, but this guy doesn't even sound like a very good one, or the best in this draft. WTF Emery

I really don't understand picking a punter. It can't be that hard to find someone of the street who can kick balls.

Pat is a heck of a punter and an athlete freak. I love this pick a lot and much more after suffering Poddlesh all season long.

Re: College Prospects (Bears Draft)
there were linebackers in these bottom rounds. Punter eh? Well a good punter can really swing the field position battle in your favor often. But dang, there were linebackers...

even that was kind of meh. I didn't like today. I liked the last pick, the O-lineman. Bout it. Seems like he intentionally drafted for floor instead of ceiling today. Nothing but future backups essentially. That may be smart in the short term given the depth problem this year IDK. But it felt like an Angelo draft day for me.
Edit: Guess we got a real punter though. Yay.

The punter would have went un-drafted. Why waste that pick with a P when there were so many round 2 talents including like fifty LBs which we could use. You could probably hold local tryouts and find someone who's just as good. visit some Chicago Fire guys.
The trade up for Vereen was bad because we lost the 5th rounder and there were four safeties (Reynolds, Dixon, Bailey, and Loston) who were at worst on the same level player,
We drafted the lineman which was a need but Richardson was still on the board. To be fair I didn't see to much of Boise, but Richardson can be a beast.
I guess its not that big of a deal since FA and the first three rounds basically filled our roster but I still hope Emery signs a bunch of the guys I wanted as FA. There are some guys that can be day one starters that went un-drafted. Most of them will probably go to the Seahawks.

Re: College Prospects (Bears Draft)
yeah, well, we traded up for Ben Vereen. Maybe he can make a team someday, dance, and backup a starter. Grand.
Seems like Emery didn't use the methodology he used to get Marquis Wilson. Hope he has some UFAs in his hip pocket with some exiting talent. He signed the FSU linebacker Christian Jones which was interesting

I think the bears drafted guys they were targeting. So I think they had a good draft in that respect. However we will see if they have any talent in drafting D players. We'll know pretty darn soon.

Eh, I would they rather take a LB.
But by the looks of it they signed a few undrafted LBs.

Re: College Prospects (Bears Draft)
Personally, I'm pretty happy overall. Fuller is very highly regarded and is a hard hitter and leader, and Vereen is also regarded as a very solid player. On top of that, they're apparently both versatile enough to play all DB spots, which will help strengthen the secondary a lot. It also means that when Peanut is gone, we've got a guy who should be able to step into his spot.
Most of the complaints I read from other fans during the draft were complaining about how it was dumb to take Ferguson in the 2nd round while guys like Sutton were still on the board. Well, in the end, we got both. I wonder if people would be complaining if we'd taken Sutton in the 2nd and Ferguson in the 3rd instead? They'd probably be ok with that, but the end result is exactly the same - we ended up with both guys. Rambling aside, I'm really happy with these two picks. They'll both need experience to hone their games (Ferguson moreso from what I've read), but I love the idea of them in combination for a lot of years to come. With Ferguson's ability to stop the run and tie up blockers, and Sutton's ability to get behind the line and get after the QB, I think they compliment each other really well, and that having such complimentary games will also make things easier for the other.
Carey sounds like an absolute workhorse and the coaches rave about him, which is exactly what we needed behind Forte. I mean Forte still has quite a few years left in him, but adding a guy who has experience in carrying a big load means we should be able to rest Forte more, which should help extend his career even further.
I like the Fales pick as well. He's not a future star by any means, but we didn't draft him to be. Cutler is locked up as the starter for the next 7 years, so all we needed was a backup who could take his time and develop into one day being a really good second-stringer or possibly start at best, and that's what Fales is. He doesn't have an arm like Cutler, but he makes good decisions and is accurate over short and mid-range, which gives us a nice contrast.
The punter... meh. He's a big unit and a freak athlete, but punters are one of the easier positions to find help at, so I understand why people are questioning this pick. Still, I've got a hell of a lot more faith in Emery than I ever had in Angelo, so I'm hoping that Emery sees something special in this guy that others have overlooked. At worst, with his size, he should help on special teams when we have to punt.
The OL guy, also meh. I mean he's a big guy, and we're not exactly loaded with a stud O-Line at the moment, so hopefully he can pan out to be at least a decent role player.
Regarding the LB situation, I'm taking the draft as a positive sign that they feel really good about the LB group we currently have. I mean we all know Briggs is a stud and Williams is good too, so I think this is a sign that we really rate the young guys like Bostic, McClellin, Greene, etc really highly, and are going to let them have first shot at the starting SLB spot and backup minutes. All in all, I think we were one of the bigger winners of this years draft.
