Read between the lines:

Angelo to shuffle Bears staff, has tepid hopes for draft

Change is in the air at Halas Hall -- and not just in ownership.

On the same day Michael McCaskey announced his planned retirement as the Bears' chairman of the board after the 2010 season, general manager Jerry Angelo confirmed he's ready to do some restructuring of his staff...

There is a scenario for change, though. Greg Gabriel, the respected director of college scouting, is thought to be on the hot seat after Angelo declined to give former personnel boss Bobby DePaul a contract extension earlier in the offseason.

''After this draft, I said that we are going to do some restructuring,'' Angelo said. ''I said that at the end of the season. I have some thoughts. I have some scenarios that I have in my mind. ... If and when we have something to announce, we'll announce it.''

Angelo gave almost the same response when he was asked if former Seattle Seahawks boss Tim Ruskell, an old friend from Angelo's days with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, finally was going to be hired. He again declined to speak in specifics, saying only that he has thought through several scenarios.

''I am always trying to be pro-active in my thinking,'' Angelo said. ''So when the dust settles with this draft, I want to give my undivided attention to that. And when that time comes -- and I'll have a window of time -- then I'll act on it.''

Reading between the lines part II

So what's all this? Well at the end of his press conference Angelo was asked what George McCaskey thought of him. His response was along the lines of - I have no idea, ask him when he comes upsatirs - Not exactly the politically correct words you would have for your organizations new leader for the future.

Tim Ruskell was rumored to be coming in some time ago to oversee pro-personnel and rumor has it that he's been helping out on the side. Why wasn't he hired back in February officially? Why is Angelo being so coy about changes to his staff. Every other team is making changes from January-Draft day so the teams are in place in the war room. We are shaking things up AFTER the draft? Makes no sense to me.

On with the drumroll.....

Emperor Jones Predict that Angelo will step down after the draft maybe take a consulting role and Tim Ruskell will take over as GM.

You heard it hear 1st gentlemen. :king:

We shall see, but a change in management certainly wouldn't hurt. It would almost certainly spell the end of Lovie in Chicago after this season.

I think you're onto something. Why else the delay in announcing Ruskell ?

If it means less Dan Bazuin-like draft picks, I'm all for it.

Not at all. Angelo becomes the scape goat (if 2010 goes bad) and Lovie plays out his contract next year (2011). Then the new guy gets to build his team. Or they bring in a completely new regime after the lockout.

Greg Gabriel is out, Tim Ruskell will be coming into that role with expanded power. One of their regional scouts will get bumped up too.

JA clearing the deck so he can get all the credit or take all the blame. Shrewd move because he's a lame duck anyways and now he can go to ownership and say, okay you can keep me and bring others in around me instead of axing him with the rest. Viny Cerrato did the same thing in Washington a few years back and he wound up milking like 5 more years out of it.

Bears Hire Tim Ruskell As Director Of Player Personnel
30th April, 2010 - 4:23 pm
ChicagoBears.com - The Bears on Friday hired Tim Ruskell as director of player personnel.

In 23 NFL seasons, Ruskell has helped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks reach the Super Bowl and the Atlanta Falcons advance to the NFC Championship Game.

Ruskell worked closely with Bears general manager Jerry Angelo with the Buccaneers from 1987-2001. Ruskell served as a regional scout (1987-1991), director of college scouting (1992-2000) and director of player personnel (2001-03). Angelo was Tampa's director of player personnel from 1987-2001.

“First and foremost, Tim brings a wealth of knowledge to the organization, both in personnel and how things are done at every level,” Angelo said. “He’s experienced everything.

“He’s been in three different organizations and had success in all of them. I think he’s going to be a real good addition. We worked together for 14 years, and I think the commonality that we share in terms of how to build a football team will bode well not only for me but for the organization.”
