What a shocker!
The Bears were destined to pick the best safety on the board.

ESPN is to f*cking busy doing the Tebow circle-jerk to even discuss the Bears 1st pick as it happens.
F.U. ESPN. Give me some Major Wright highlights. PRONTO.

Well, if you really want ESPN to rip the Bears for finally having a pick, I guess that's your cup of tea.
The Bears have no secondary, so I guess any bit helps.

Well Kiper liked it if that means anything as he had Wright going early 2nd. 4.44 40yd time and a 37 1/2" vertical.
5'11", 206lbs. From NFL.com :
Wright has good size, strength and toughness for the safety position. He is an instinctive defender that fills the alley quickly versus the run. He is a good open field tackler and can be physical to deliver a big hit. Wright reads route progressions well and is solid leveraging the ball in zone coverage’s. He can be inconsistent to shed blockers and will need to improve in this phase of his game at the next level. Wright doesn’t have great speed or agility which may limit his ability to be effective in zone coverage. Wright is a good football player that wins with toughness, instincts and technique but may lack the pure athleticism to break into a starting roll at the next level.

From NFL Draft Scout :
NFL scouts like his speed and physicality and believe he'll be able to make an immediate impact on special teams. His big hitting and playmaking skills make him a quality free safety prospect. Though he improved his open-field tackling as a junior, he'll need to continue to improve in the league if he is to make his mark as the last line of defense.
Often played a true center field role, showing good instincts and the straight-line speed for coverage. Protects the deep middle. Closes quickly and has good ball skills to make the play. ... Good range to prevent the big play. Has improved his angles to limit the damage. ... Quick to come downhill in run support. ... No hesitancy in taking on the bigger ball carrier.

Scout.com's "most overrated" safety. They have him all the way down as the #17 safety in this year's draft :
17. Major Wright. Florida 5-11, 206 (SS)
A big-time recruit even among Florida’s high standards, he was a tough all-around defender who played at a high level for his entire career. While he’s not all that big, he’s a great hitter who doesn’t have any problems throwing his body around. The 4.48 he tore off at the Combine showed off his range, but he’s not smooth and he’s not a phenomenal athlete for his size. With his style, he might have a short shelf life and might always get banged up, and it would be a big help if he didn’t always go for the kill shot and was able to simply make the routine stop. Some will see him as a possible Bob Sanders type and will overdraft him, but that’s a huge reach for a good but limited player.

We finally addressed the safety position in a somewhat meaningful way. Hooray. Hopefully he doesn't suck.

Dont worry Lovie will coach him up he knows DBs . Im loving the speed and if we can get a pass rush going maybe he can snatch a few and return them to the house ala Mike Brown style .

Really happy about this pick and not worried at all about Scout's Inc report. Check out their report on taylor Mays last year. He was going to be a HOFer acording to them.
I like having Manning at SS and more speed at FS since we switch up the safeties so much. Now all we need to do is sign a FA LG and I'm happy they way we look going into camp

I liked this pick. According to Icness we really wanted Morgan Burnett though but he was snatched up by the Packers like four picks before us.

Would have preferred LSU safety Chad Jones to Wright as I believe Jones is the better coverage safety.
In more ways than one it's disappointing that the Gaines Adams pick could have netted Taylor Mays. I know Adams' passing away hurts that, but really that was an awful deal the instant it happened. Now seeing what the Bears passed on makes that an even worse trade.
EDIT: The Gaines Adams trade is going to be like the Juan Pierre trade to the Cubs: it was bad at the time, it didn't get better over time and no one really talks about it but that trade really hurt your franchise.

100% agree. Not taking into account Adams' death and just looking at the value given up for the player it really hurts. When you see Donavan McNabb going for a 2nd round pick and other established players going for 3rd - 5th round picks we really got robbed. We could have gone Mays there or better yet grabbed a guy like Vladimir Ducasse for the OL and still gotten our safety in round 3.

That was Major Wright that leveled that Oklahoma player? That was just awesome.
