Backup QB

Post#1 » by What » Tue Aug 17, 2010 4:02 pm

As you know, Caleb Haine sprained his shoulder against the Chargers last week. He will be out for the rest of the preseason. The Bears have been looking for a cheap free agent. They first reached out to Trent Green (again) and he said no, then Damon Huard, another no, and now we offered a contract and thought about it for a day and said no. Josh McCown played for Martz in Detroit but

Do not believe Josh McCown is in play at this point.

So who's left? JaMarcus Russell? I sure wish Bulger was still around.

Honestly, it makes all the sense in the world to go after Kurt Warner. Throw some money his way and he becomes more of a coach/mentor than anything else. For the most part, he has no pressure, pretty much stays retired, but can still work in football in an advisory role.

Todd Collins rejected:

And forget about Kurt Warner. If he really wanted a job, he'd go back to a good situation in Arizona.

also:
The Bears also made overtures to Trent Green and Damon Huard that were rejected. It will be tough to sign an experienced quarterback if the belief is that Hanie is ensured of being the No. 2 behind Cutler.

I hadn't heard that Hanie was injured, but even if he wasn't, I don't think that many Bears fans were really comfortable going into the season with Hanie as the #2 anyway. With the problems that two of my teams (Bears and Redskins) have, I have plenty to talk about on message boards. I don't know how my other team (Jets) are going now, and at the moment I'm too worried to check.

Hanie wasn't injured that bad. The Bears just need another QB for scrimmages and drills (you can't have practice with only 1 QB). Hanie will be out for a couple weeks so they're bringing Gutierrez for practice. I'm pretty sure he'll be cut before the season starts, and Hanie will be the #2 for the season.

If that is true, then it is good to hear that Hanie wasn't that badly injured. My other question remains though - do you really want to go through a season with Caleb Hanie as your fallback if Cutler goes down with an injury?

Pretty sure the Bears expect him back for the regular season. This is for practices and stuff since LeFevour is just God awful so far.

I'd like to keep LeFevour on the roster though. Not for this year but for the future. I liked him coming out of Central Michigan and think he has some potential.

Supposedly, he put in a lot of time this off-season and has been working hard with Martz. He's had a couple moments where he looked really good and a couple where he looked really bad.

It would be ncie to bring in a vet, but I doubt the Bears will pay that kind of money. Hanie will be the fallback whether we like it or not. I think he's got talent though. I'm not extremely worried about it. If J-Cut goes down, our season is probably sunk anyways.
