Bears Consider Taylor Mays

The Chicago Bears tried to trade for San Francisco 49ers safety Taylor Mays, but the deal is now a "dead issue," sources said Friday.
In search of depth at linebacker and on special teams, the Bears likely would have moved Mays (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) from his customary safety spot to linebacker had the 49ers agreed to the transaction.
But because of the time it would take Mays to make the transition, and with the regular season starting in a little more than three weeks, the Bears backed off.
It was not clear what the Bears were willing to give up for Mays.
According to a report by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter on Aug. 4, the 49ers sent out an email to 31 teams informing them that Mays was available in a trade.
A likely scenario would have had the Bears offering the 49ers the 2012 third-round pick they received as compensation from Carolina in the trade involving tight end Greg Olsen.
http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/ ... -mays-deadI think that this would've been a good move. Just imagine the size & speed aspect of pairing him with Urlacher & Briggs.
I always looked at him as a faster version of Urlacher at the college safety position. Their similarities from college to the NFL would've been mirror images.

Very interesting. All the complaints people have with him at safety would disappear with a switch to LB. He'd just need to bulk up 15 pounds or so over time.

Yep. His frame is built to carry 15 or 20 more pounds easily. I hope the Bears re-visit these talks because I can see him being a very good addition to our team.

I would've loved this deal. A third round pick would be well worth it. He could fight for a starting position next year as either a safety or linebacker. He's ridiculously athletic and a big hitter. I too hope the Bears revisit these talks.

NFL.com - The 49ers have traded safety Taylor Mays to the Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick.
Mays flew out of San Francisco on Monday night and is expected at Paul Brown Stadium on Tuesday.
He is the third member of the 49ers to head to the Bengals, after cornerback Nate Clements and linebacker Manny Lawson signed free-agent deals earlier this month

Just read he was traded for a 7th round pick in 2013 so I doubt there was any truth to the story that the Bears had interest. They obviously had no interest whatsoever LOL!
