This is actually a pretty big hire for us as he's not only the QB coach but the passing game offensive coordinator. Not sure how that's going to work exactly.

Solid move to make Jay comfortable. Also great insurance should Tice leave at the end of the year to be head coach somewhere.

The team was searching for a new quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator after the organization severed ties with veteran offensive coordinator Mike Martz and assistant coach Shane Day immediately following the conclusion of the regular season. But the Bears have decided not to hire a passing game coordinator, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Great! He was my #1 choice, based on his previous very productive success with Cutler in Denver. Denver also did a great job of protecting Cutler, and proving strong run O line play. Good move. Now let's go get some # 1 WRs to help get the offense rolling.

Just a hunch by me, but I wouldn't be surprised if Bates will indeed be the passing coordinator. He simply won't have the title.

It would be bad for Tice's resume if he was thought of as a partial offensive coordinator. In my opinion, there will be a public effort to portray Tice as fully in control of the offense, but behind closed doors, Bates & Cutler will have control of the passing side of things.

Tice was always going to call the pass plays - Tice as the OC was going to call all plays. The 'Pass Coord' has more to do with developing and coaching the blocking/routes for pass plays and working on the week to week passing gameplans.

Its also not unique to the Bears - there are several teams that employ 'pass/run coordinators'.

Bates will work with Cutler on the week to week game-planning, but ultimately Tice will approve and call the plays once the game starts.

Seems to me you'd want to have your OC be "the guy" for developing and calling both running and passing plays, IMO. Too many cooks and everything. It just tells me Tice isn't completely comfortable with gameplanning as a whole if you need a pass coordinator in title. But if it works, fine.

No, I'm not advocating that, I'm more-so trying to update our board on ANY new WR news.

I just try to add something for discussion whenever I log in to the Bears board. I figure that any type of discussion is good discussion with you guys .

Hey you said the dominoes were falling, not me!

Free time today so I've actually just spent the last hour looking at highlights of Kendall Wright and Michael Floyd, trying to figure out who's my guy in Rd1 if we're going WR and both are staring us in the face. I see a lot of sites saying Wright's the better WR but I really think Floyd is the better fit for a team with Cutler at QB. They're calling Wright the next Mike Wallace or Harvin (sans migraines) and Floyd the next Kenny Britt. I suppose the Britt comparison is made because the talent's there but then you've got the character concerns with alcohol/immaturity issues. If you can research and ease those concerns, though, Floyd looks like a #1 WR to me in so many ways. Big target, great hands, good adjustments on bad balls, tough to bring down.

Wright's definitely got Floyd in straight line speed but those other assets Floyd has more than makes up for that. He's my guy. And as an old DePaul grad, I've been taught to HAAAATE ND with a passion so that's saying something.

I haven't studied them like you & others have, but Floyd being our pick sounds about right. I simply don't see us trading away any future first or second round picks, considering the high picks that we've given away for Cutler & Gaines Adams in the past.

I see us making a 12:01 am phone call on the day that free-agency begins to an established WR, then following that up with the best available WR when our # is called in the first rd.

Well, we're getting into a whole new thread topic here but I just don't think there's going to be a 4-3 DE worth the pick otherwise I'd consider it. At this point, I'm looking at Floyd, Kendall Wright, OT Mike Adams, and CB Dre Kirkpatrick.

I agree with what has been said about reuniting Cutler and Bates. I think it will really help Cutler's confidence, and he will be in a much more familiar setup, surrounded by people that he is comfortable with.

Regarding the draft, I'm not quite sure exactly what to hope for. The defense is getting older, but we have four Pro Bowlers among them, so I think they can stand up for another year or so if they need to. On the offensive side, however, we have a weak line, which in my opinion CAN'T stay like it is again. Getting Carimi and Williams back will certainly help, but we still need help. We also have some nice recieving talent in Hester, Bennett and Knox (if he plays this year), but we need more. Adding depth to the offensive line will help in pass protection and adding more talent at WR will both also help Cutler. I guess we just have to put our faith in the hands of the team and hope that they have a good plan come draft/free-agent time.
