The addition of Michael Bush to the Chicago Bears' backfield seemed to spell the end for Marion Barber. But maybe Barber knew the end was coming long before any personnel decisions were made.

Barber, 28, has decided to retire, the Bears announced Friday. He was due a base salary of $1.9 million for 2012 and had a cap figure of $2.25 million. His decision saves the Bears $2 million in cap space.

The reason behind Barber's decision is unknown, although he dealt with a nagging calf injury all of last season. He finished the year with 422 yards on 114 carries with six touchdowns.

I know we all rip on Barber for going out of bounds on that Denver game but when he was healthy, I've got to be fair and say he looked just fine to me last year. Guess his body couldn't take it anymore.

Whoooaaa. I did not expect that. Aside from one lapse, he was good with us.

Sounds like maybe the rumors were true regarding him costing us that Denver gave because of his selfish goal of reaching a contact incentive :dontknow: .

If it is true, could that have possibly hurt his reputation around the league?

Since M. Barber is retiring,..... if he decided to play later this season or next season would the Bears still hold his rights to trade him ?
