Round 1 Prediction

Post#1 » by Chewie » Sat Apr 21, 2012 12:28 pm

OK, boys, Round 1 of the 2012 NFL Draft is this Thursday and we've all kicked names around this board but it's time to go on record with your prediction for the Bears. This isn't about who you *want* the pick to be, it's who you think we'll pick.

Up until today, I wanted Courtney Upshaw and also thought he'd be the pick. Even though a lot of teams see him as a 3-4, I think he's better suited for the 4-3 and I just think he's got great awareness for the position. HOWEVER, I'm backing off this pick now. Upshaw came up with weak injury excuses not to work out at the combine and then had a ho-hum pro day and I believe that's going to let other guys with more explosiveness leap frog him.

I don't want Mercilus to be the guy. Every time I watch tape of him I come away unimpressed. I'm tempted to say he's going to be the guy, though, since this isn't about my preference but who I think the Bears will pick.

However, I'm going to say the pick will be Nick Perry, DE (USC). I originally thought he'd just be a 3-4 guy but he clearly prefers to be a 4-3 DE and has stated as much. He's put on the extra weight to get up to 270 lbs and while he doesn't have ideal height the fact he has a 38.5" vertical jump should help negate that. He's probably one of the most explosive DEs in this draft coming off the blocks and looks like he's mastered the skill of getting down low against opposing OTs and using leverage to his advantage. He's going to get swallowed up at times against the big boys but you're going to have to accept that.

Soooo...I'm on record. Nick Perry. Book it.

I agree. I've thought from day one that he is tied for the top DE with Coples and Ingram, if not the top DE. I think he could be a pro-bowler, especially opposite another star DE.

Of course if someone drops to 19 who should not be there (Reiff, Kuechly, Floyd, Cox, DeCastro) they would be the pick. So barring other teams' entire front office suddenly becoming ill, Perry is the pick.

I know you've been telling me to look at Perry for a while but I've always pegged him as a 3-4 guy. The fact that he came in at 270 and said he definitely sees himself as a 4-3 DE sold me. Hopefully he can keep that weight on.

Chewie: Nick Perry, DE (USC)

I feel that Floyd will fall to us at 19. The Bears will proceed to trade out of that pick & choose a defensive player later in the first round.

That player will be..................

........the guy that Heir & Chewie mentioned above :D .

Are you kidding me ? Well, if Floyd fell, I'd think long and hard about just going ahead and pulling the trigger as there's depth at DE this year for sure. And I have seen Perry earlier and much later than 19 in the mock ups I've seen so that's an interesting take....

Chewie: Nick Perry, DE (USC)

Lovie worked out Mercilus, but Maranelli flew out to LA to work out Perry.

Bears trade down, pick up a 4th rounder and take Nick Perry in the 1st round.

I'm not saying that I would personally pass on him if he fell, but I feel the Bears would be concerned that he fell because of character issues. They already have their hands full with Brandon Marshall, regarding potential character issues on the team.

I figure that the Bears would be in prime position to get maximum value from a team desperate for Floyd. They would be in a perfect spot to grab extra picks, while still getting their preferred defensive player.

Right, right - that's what I'm looking for. What the Bears would do, not what Biggie would do.

Just can't believe we're all agreeing here.

That was his weight at the combine. Actually 271 to be exact.

Talks "in depth" on how he got his weight up and how he prefers a 4-3 defense in the combine media session here:

I've always thought Perry was the best DE in this draft i would definitely as long as Floyd is off the board.

Coples has a bigger potential to bust cuz he has no motor. and Perry is better anyway

Wouldn't have a problem with Coples, just don't think he'll last to 19. Hearing a lot of talk about his motor and taking plays off his senior season....the one he should have cared the most about. But - again - this isn't about my preference, it's about Emery's.

Good to have some diversity in our picks...

Chewie: Nick Perry, DE (USC)
heir jordan22: Nick Perry, DE (USC)
BIGGIEsmalls 23: Nick Perry, DE (USC) (after a trade down)
emperorjones: Nick Perry, DE (USC) (after a trade down)
Magilla Gorilla: Quinton Coples, DE (UNC)

And he might be suspended for a quarter of the season or more. If he is then Earl Bennett will be the only legitimate receiver on the roster, and we all know he's a slot. We need another outside receiver even if Marshall isn't suspended.

The only other receiver who could play outside for us this year outside of Blackmon and Floyd are Randle and Hill, and I doubt either one of them will be there in the second. There's more starter quality DEs this year than outside WRs, and Floyd is a better player than Perry.

The only way I can see us trading down is if we can get Cleveland's 22nd pick and their second rounder.
