Up until today, I wanted Courtney Upshaw and also thought he'd be the pick. Even though a lot of teams see him as a 3-4, I think he's better suited for the 4-3 and I just think he's got great awareness for the position. HOWEVER, I'm backing off this pick now. Upshaw came up with weak injury excuses not to work out at the combine and then had a ho-hum pro day and I believe that's going to let other guys with more explosiveness leap frog him.
I don't want Mercilus to be the guy. Every time I watch tape of him I come away unimpressed. I'm tempted to say he's going to be the guy, though, since this isn't about my preference but who I think the Bears will pick.
However, I'm going to say the pick will be Nick Perry, DE (USC). I originally thought he'd just be a 3-4 guy but he clearly prefers to be a 4-3 DE and has stated as much. He's put on the extra weight to get up to 270 lbs and while he doesn't have ideal height the fact he has a 38.5" vertical jump should help negate that. He's probably one of the most explosive DEs in this draft coming off the blocks and looks like he's mastered the skill of getting down low against opposing OTs and using leverage to his advantage. He's going to get swallowed up at times against the big boys but you're going to have to accept that.
Soooo...I'm on record. Nick Perry. Book it.
