When free agency opened in March, there was talk that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were working to trade Kellen Winslow Jr. to the Chicago Bears. Of course, the deal the Bears got done was a much bigger one as they acquired wide receiver Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins.

Now, the Bucs are going to see if they can send the veteran tight end Winslow anywhere in a deal after informing him Saturday they are going in a different direction. Winslow announced the news Monday morning while appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Factor in his age and those knees with his contract -- Winslow is due to earn $3.3 million this season -- and it might be that the Bucs are forced to release him. Winslow is signed through 2014 and none of the remaining money is guaranteed. Keep in mind, the Bears got only a third-round draft pick last summer for a younger and healthier Greg Olsen. So, that gives you an idea of how little the Bucs might get in trade.

There is no question Winslow will find a home this season and it will be interesting to see if the Bears are in play for him if he reaches the open market. They’ve professed ultimate faith in Kellen Davis. Interestingly, Davis shares the same agent as Winslow -- Drew Rosenhaus -- and in order for Davis to finally blossom he will need an opportunity to be the man.

I'm thinking about the Bears situation. Lots of tight ends if Winslow came aboard. I think Spaeth was more of a Martz system guy. They would have to make some moves, or put off using The rookie for now except on special teams. I think with 3.8 million of cap space left, I'd actually rather them focus on aquiring an athletic DT with lead in his pants.

Might have more legs after tryout players are making Evan Rodriguez look bad in rookie minicamp.

Somewhere Matt Forte does a slow burn.

That Rodriguez pick has so much bust potential. I never liked the idea of a 4th rounder for a gadget player.

I think we should go after him. An old man is going to replace him so he wont get paid much. Low risk high reward in my opinion

I wouldn't be opposed to trading a 5th for Winslow and I definitely wouldn't be opposed to signing him if he is cut. He would immediately be our #1 TE and allow Rodriquez to grow into a starter. Davis will just always be our #2 TE.

He's a decent blocker, he's athletic, and he's a damn good receiving TE. Bring him in!

I definitely go after him. if Rodriguez pans out then he can ride the bench for a few years as a backup. Hard to put a "bust" label ona 4th round pick if he doesnt though

He's a Seahawk now.

Moving on.

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Seattle Seahawks for a draft pick on Monday night and signed former Colts star Dallas Clark to replace him.

Tampa Bay received a conditional 2013 draft pick in the deal, which a source told ESPN.com's Mike Sando is a seventh-rounder that can elevate to sixth-round choice.

Didn't want him, didn't need him. It's Kellen Davis' time to shine.

40 catches 600+ yards and 4 TD for kellen davis this year.

pretty much tony scheffler when he was with denver.

it would be interesting to see if the bears oline adapt some of denver's zone blocking scheme that worked so well while shanahan was the head coach over there. i doubt it tho, b/c we got some beefy guys inside at the guard and tackle position.

Davis will do better than that IMO and could be a good sneaky late round fantasy TE pick once the other studs are taken.

If Tice got 71/705/4 in 13 starts out of 29 year Jermaine Wiggins....JERMAINE WIGGINS....I've got to think Kellen Davis can put up better than 40/600/4.

but you also got to remember that tice's 2004 team had no legit running back. they relied on passing too much and their record reflected that.

No love for Onterrio Smith? Haha - yeah I get that point. Not saying Kellen catching 70 balls but he'll be good for more than 4 TDs, IMO.

A fourth rounder? He is a TE and will create mismatches if he developes right. But if he does bust out, it's a fourth rounder, not a second rounder.

4th rounders are very valuable, with lots of good players available that can be expected to have a good shot to make the team.

When players at need positions like Bobby Massie are available, Rodriguez as a gamble can bust. Perhaps we can engage in a semantic discussion about Rodriguez's draft stock and have fun with that. While we can quibble about the semantic definition of bust, if he doesn't pan out it was possibly a foolish choice. He was a lux pick with real needs to fill and higher rated players avail at the need positions.

His own words, guys:

"I'd like to have between 40-60 catches at least," Davis said. "I'm hoping to get out there and put some numbers up.'

"I think (the new offense) is really tailored more to (quarterback) Jay (Cutler). We're going to keep him clean so he can get the ball out of his hands a lot faster. It's tailored more to what he likes to do. That obviously makes him comfortable, so you know the routes are better for us, for me, at the tight end position. I get a lot of first reads on a lot of plays. So it's all looking good for me right now."
