Breaking news: The Bucs have traded DT Brian Price to the Bears for an undisclosed 2013 pick, pending physical. Other roster moves coming.

The 23-year-old Price was a second round draft pick for the Buccaneers in 2010, and has 27 tackles and 3.0 sacks in 20 career games. A pelvic injury forced him to miss the last 11 games of the season his rookie year, but he did appear in all but one game in 2011.

As a senior, Price was named the Pac-10's Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year for UCLA.

TAMPA --
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers shook up their roster on the eve of training camp Thursday, trading defensive tackle Brian Price to the Chicago Bears and releasing wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe, the team announced.

Price was the Bucs second-round draft pick in 2010, but he struggled from the beginning of his career with physical problems and earlier this year with the loss of his sister, who was killed in a car accident in May.

Price, who had to be hospitalized for physical and mental exhaustion following the loss of his sister, also got into a fight during offseason workouts with Bucs first-round draft pick Mark Barron.

The Bucs received an undisclosed draft pick in return for Price, pending a physical. Price's agent, Charles Price, told the Tribune this week that Brian Price would report to camp in the best shape of his career.

Price had two surgical procedures to re-attach his hamstrings to his fractured pelvis more than a year ago, but is believed to be fully recovered.

Holy ouch!

Bucs couldn't get mid-round pick for Brian Price so they dumped him

By Brad Biggs | National Football Post – 5 hours ago

A little more than two years after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers invested the 35th overall pick of the 2010 draft on UCLA defensive tackle Brian Price, he is gone.
The Bucs dumped Price on Thursday, trading him to the Chicago Bears for a seventh-round draft pick in 2013. It was real simple. New coach Greg Schiano didn’t want Price around and the Bucs didn’t want to risk an injury for him in training camp that could put them on the hook for his contract this season.
Tampa had been looking to trade Price for some time and an executive with another club said the Bucs were looking for a mid-round draft pick. No one warmed to that idea, so the Bucs took what they could get and moved on.
Price had failed a conditioning test and he will have to pass a physical with the Bears to make the deal official. He’s been through a tremendous amount of personal struggles off the field.
Was the conditioning test the final thing?
“It’s hard to say that,” Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said, according to PewterReport.com. “He’s had an unfortunate career and an unfortunate personal life. A really tragic personal life. So it’s very difficult to think about all the things he’s gone through, from losing his sister, to the injuries he’s dealt with and the surgeries he’s dealt with. But at some point we have to go out there and win some football games, and part of the plan for us was to be involved in free agency and find guys like Amobi Okoye and Wallace Gilberry who can help out, so it’s a position that we have focused on, knowing this day could come.”
Price has had serious hamstring issues and Dominik defended the pick.

“You don’t go into it and want that to happen obviously as an organization,” Dominik said. “I don’t think anyone in the NFL didn’t think Brian Price wasn’t a second-round talent. When we drafted he there wasn’t anyone saying, ‘Geez he was a fourth-round (talent).’ It just hasn’t worked out. And it is disappointing to us as an organization and I know Brian Price is disappointed it worked out the way it did. But at the same point we have to move and do what we feel as an organization – and me specifically – that are in the best interest of this football team.
“I have a lot of respect for Brian. He has been through a lot of personal drama, and he got a lot of physical drama he has been though too. He got to get everything put together. But we will let the Bears … I’ll will watch from afar, but at the same point I am looking forward to seeing the guys who are here who can practice everyday and play everyday and contribute to this football team.”

exactly. But I think whatever his issue was, was mostly between the ears. That said, Tommie Harris had a gruesome Hamstring injury too and perhaps coincidentally was never the same. I think he hurt his knee after that.

The Bears needed a more natural nose tackle on the roster so they can change things up at times. Price can be that type if healthy and has his mind right. But if he was dumped off so soon in his career, I'm not optimistic it can work out.

^^^^^^Thanks. That's not an investment worth stressing about. Most 7th rd picks are not locks to even make the roster.

Here's what Ourlads said about Price when he came out:

BRIAN PRICE: UCLA, . Junior entry. Three-year starter. Fast twitch disruptive defensive lineman that knows how to use his hands. Explosive gap quickness to penetrate and get up the field. Relentless with a burst to the quarterback. Good fit as an under tackle in a four man front. Explosive hip snap to leverage pad under pad to stack the run. A John Randle type quick penetrator. One of the best interior linemen to rush the passer from the inside in this draft. Functional strength. He has a desire and fire to play this position and takes pride in doing so. A second effort, never quit type of player plays this position. Can adjust on the move. Will face up and wrap tackle. Thick lower body. Career marks include 97 tackles, 44 1/2 tackles for loss, 12 1/2 sacks, and 5 forced fumbles. Edge speed:left 1.98, right 2.05. First/second round.

Clearly a gamble due to the physical and mental/emotional issues, but for a 7th-round pick, it's a low-risk/high-reward decision.

I also heard somewhere that the 7th rounder is conditional on whether Price makes the Bears' final roster. Can't confirm, but if true, it becomes even more of a no-brainer.

Price if healthy is a starter caliber. Btw his surgery was last year. He played all last season with that injury after the surgery. That made me feel a lot better about it.

For the Buccaneers, swapping a former second-rounder for a seventh-round pick can be nothing but disappointing.

But for Brian Price, getting to Chicago may represent the fresh start he needs after a tumultuous year.

In an excellent story by Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Price talks about wanting to pay the Bears back for their faith in him.

“I’m just real thankful for this opportunity. It’s a burning feeling,” he said. “They’re giving me a chance and showing me so much love.

“They believe in me, and I ain’t even played for them yet.”

The 23-year-old defensive tackle’s past (his brothers were murdered in gang-related violence) is recapped in Jensen’s story, but the last few months alone are enough to write a book about. Emotionally crippled by the loss of his sister in a hit-and-run accident in May, Price’s time in Tampa came to an end after a fight with a teammate, allowing the new coaching staff to make a bit of an example of him.

Argh. Super busy @ work so you'll have to excuse the absence on the board but I'll say for a 7th rd pick this was an absolute no-brainer even if he doesn't make the final cut. Living in Tampa-land, I can tell you the new coach here isn't putting up with anything - so I'm sure the fight w/Barron was the final straw. If you're an outlier in the Bucs camp you're gone so good for Emery for taking a chance on Price. There's zero risk at that price (no pun intended).

Same concept with James Brown who moved off some boards due to character concerns and it sounds like he may be working out @ right tackle from early reports.

Admittedly, new Chicago Bears defensive tackle Brian Price experienced somewhat of a difficult time Tuesday in his first real practice with his new team.

Brian Price, who the Bears traded for this past weekend, appears to have his work cut out for him.
The fact the workout served as his first with the team didn’t matter.

“Ain’t no asterisks next to your name when you’re out there on the field,” Price said. “I’m a competitor. I’m always hard on myself. So I know I didn’t do that good. I’ve just got to come back with a vengeance.”

Acquired by the Bears through a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on July 26, Price missed two workouts after passing his physical on July 27, and wasn’t eligible to join teammates on the field for practice until Tuesday.

The Bears distributed Price’s repetitions sparingly in his practice debut. But the few snaps in which Price participated indicated there’s still plenty of work for the veteran defensive tackle to do before he’s ready to contribute extensively.

Not a good beginning for him.
