I believe this topic deserves it's own thread, patryk. I will provide more info below for you to make a thread buddy, since you broke the news:

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears have released former first-round pick offensive linemen Chris Williams and re-signed cornerback Zack Bowman to a one-year contract, the team announced on Tuesday.

Williams started 38 games over five seasons after the Bears selected him with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Williams bounced around the offensive line where he spent time at left tackle, right tackle and left guard. The veteran began the 2012 preseason in competition for the Bears' starting left tackle position but ultimately lost out to current starter J'Marcus Webb. Williams had been a healthy inactive the last two games versus Dallas and Jacksonville leading up to his release. Bowman left the Bears in free agency after he made 16 starts at cornerback from 2008-'11. A former fifth-round draft choice, Bowman led the team with six interceptions in 2009 but fell out of the starting lineup early the next season. While the Bears appear set at cornerback, Bowman could be insurance on special teams if Sherrick McManis is slowed due to hip strain he suffered before the bye week.

The Bears also terminated the practice squad contract of defensive end Aston Whiteside.

I think they're a little nervous about our back-ups. I think that game Peanut went down kinda exposed our back-up CBs.

Regarding Williams, how bad of a player is he if he was beat out by Webb & Webb's back-up?

I believe Bowman's specific skill is in trailing receivers down the field as they catch the ball behind him. Looking good in uniform. I hope that's not an upgrade.

I do have more hope for James Brown than I did for Williams.

I don't think there's a thread about this yet, but didn't we also sign Brody Eldridge and release Kahlil Bell?

^^^Yes. I posted it in the 'Matt Forte' thread.

It just sucks to see another wasted 1st round pick by Angelo. Well, at least he drafted Forte in the 2nd rd of that draft.

Here's a list of the players taken after Williams in the 1st rd that year:

14. Chicago - Chris Williams, OT Vanderbilt
15. Kansas City - Branden Albert, G Virginia
16. Arizona - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB Tennessee State
17. Detroit - Gosder Cherilus, OT Boston College
18. Baltimore - Joe Flacco, QB Delaware
19. Carolina - Jeff Otah, OT Pittsburgh
20. Tampa Bay - Aqib Talib, CB Kansas
21. Atlanta - Sam Baker, OT USC
22. Dallas - Felix Jones, RB Arkansas
23. Pittsburgh - Rashard Mendenhall, RB Illinois
24. Tennessee - Chris Johnson, RB East Carolina
25. Dallas - Mike Jenkins, CB South Florida
26. Houston - Duane Brown, OT Virginia Tech
27. San Diego - Antoine Cason, CB Arizona
28. Seattle - Lawrence Jackson, DE USC
29. San Francisco - Kentwan Balmer, DT North Carolina
30. NY Jets - Dustin Keller, TE Purdue
31. NY Giants - Kenny Phillips, S Miami (FL)

Hated the pick when it was made, Chris had huge injury red flags coming out of college. Actually thought he had some talent but that neck problem was a big if for me. This move should have come after training camp to be honest.

I liked Williams as a pulling guard against the run last year. Thought before the wrist injury, he had carved a niche for himself. That said, I really think its a non issue. Overall a total bust of a puck. If Tice can't make you an O-Lineman, good luck.

As for Bowman? Was a big fan when drafted, but just didn't like his play the last 2 seasons.

I was hoping he'd be lg. I guess the fact that he can't stay healthy for more than six games a year, and that we've got a cheaper, more athletic, probably more motivated guy in Rachal pretty much ended it for him. And the new swing tackle is also cheaper.

Bowman: ehhh
Bell dropped: no biggie
Random tight end: ehhh

IDK Bowman was playing pretty well as when he was our 5th corner last year. Might be the signing of the year.

Ouch. The silver lining is the guy in charge of that draft is gone. Angelo.

Chris Williams was inactive so hard to be upset. Bowman could be used on punt team as a gunner.
I do remember thinging to myself during a game that our gunners didnt look as strong as the year before. Of course we lost Graham.

Maybe thats what he here for, idk.
But in todays Nfl , one place you dont wanna be shorthanded at is corner.

Leading up to the draft I was hoping for Albert or Baker. I was a better talent evaluator than Angelo at a young age lol

FWIW the other guy the Bears were strongly considering at that spot was Jeff Otah, who has been out of the league with injury and lethargy issues for over a year now.

True, but there's a lot of talent that was picked behind Chris Williams. Luckily, Angelo picked Forte in the 2nd round of that draft.

If the williams debacle had even a little to do with getting angelo out, then it was a smashing sucess, WOULD DO AGAIN.

Waste a 1st round pick and miss on a chance to get a all-star caliber player to remove a GM?

For what it's worth, Otah played pretty well for about a year and looked like a mauler in the making.

Again, Williams had an injury history and the Bears ignored it. Tough to justify such a pick back then and it looks worse now.

Return to Chicago Bears
