Devin Hester

What should we do with him?

Personally I want to keep him, but as a return man only. This experiment as a receiver has failed. He will never be good. Let him get all the punt returns, and kick returns. He clearly can't do all three things, so let him do what made him special in the first place. If he doesn't want to be a return specialist anymore, trade him.

This appears to be the problem with Hester. There were reports earlier this season that he was complaining because of his lack of involvement in the offense. I truly believe this led to him having a sub-par year as a returner.

I believe Hester's agents are in his ear telling him that the money is at WR. Considering he's coming to the end of his current contract, I believe Devin played selfish ball this season. If he doesn't come to the realization that he's not cut out to be an every down WR, I would trade his ass in a heartbeat.

Hopefully, we can get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him.

I agree that he should just be a return specialist. He's had down years before - his 3rd-4th years in the league - but he was at least contributing on offense then (with 50+ receptions each year).

Now that we actually have what's shaping up to be a good receiving core, we don't need him there. I love what the guy has done, but he should stay as a returner.

He really should be a returner only, but I think we all know that's not going to happen. In the offseason and throughout the season, he wanted to be more involved with the offense, and he doesn't just want to be a returner anymore, because he'll obviously be earning more money as a WR.

I'd trade him in a heartbeat if we could get a 2nd or 3rd round pick out of him, but I think he's untradeable at this point. He botches returns by going horizontal rather than just going straight ahead and reading the blocking on them move as he used to do, and he's overzealous returning kickoffs from halfway in the endzone. His contract is too big for any time to want him simply as a returner, and he has no skills as a WR to speak of. We're stuck with him until his contract expires.

I say trade him at this point especially if he doesnt want to be a full time KR anymore . Our goal right now should be for Bennett to be our 4th wideout and for Hester to be our 5th wideout and full time kick returner if he doesnt want to do it we see where Knox is and we address it in the late rounds of the draft.

Trade him for draft picks to anyone willing to part with them. We need to load up on young talent from anywhere in the draft. The higher the pick(s), the better. His performance this season really didn't help his value though.

He is shot, I can't believe the people that want him to return still.

He consistently runs backwards/walks out of the endzone/runs sideline to sideline.

He consistently runs backwards/sideline to sideline, when we throw him a screen or quick pass to the outside or when he comes in for a reverse. He plays like he is playing Madden, and consistently makes the wrong decisions, and either he wont change for the good of the team, or he cannot learn how to do things (obvious when you look at his routes).

Lucky to get a 4th for him, probably not even that.

Word. The truth hurts. His cap hit next season is like 3-4 million. I dont know the ins and outs of NFL contracts, but you drop that off fast like the girl you shouldnt have slept with last night

Devastated Hester considering retirement

Record-setting Chicago Bears wide receiver and returner Devin Hester was devastated by the news Monday morning that Lovie Smith was fired as coach, and said he is contemplating retirement from the game.

Hester, who blamed media and fans for Smith’s removal after nine seasons, was visibly crushed by the news as he cleaned out his locker at Halas Hall following a brief team meeting in which Smith addressed his players.

“We already knew what the news was,” Hester said. “Just hearing it from him. The media, the false fans, you all got what you all wanted. Majority of you all wanted him out. As players, we wanted him in. I guess the false fans outruled us. I thought he was a great coach, probably one of the best coaches I have ever been around. He brought me in.”

Hester, 30, said he is going to return home and isn’t interested in tracking a coaching search general manager Phil Emery has already launched.

“I don’t even know if I want to play again, man,” Hester said. “You know, that’s been on my mind for two years now.

“It’s not (as much fun anymore). It ain’t. So, I have my workers’ comp papers in my pocket. See how I feel, go home and talk to my wife, my family. See where we go from there. I’ve got two beautiful kids, man, young. Two boys. A lot of stress has been on my mind lately.”

Asked to clarify the workers’ comp issue, Hester said, he is “not (injured) physically, but mentally. I have had injuries here or there. That is part of football. Who walks away from this game without being injured.”

I don't want him back at any capacity and I'm his biggest fan. He isn't a game breaker in the return the game anymore.

Hester says he is interested in going wherever Smith is hired. I can't understand why Hester likes Lovie so much, Lovie did slowly take away his WR spot and didn't exactly promote his cause.

Restructure his contract or cut him. We can easily find a nice return man in the draft (Robert Woods and tyrann mathieu are just two examples). We can't afford him with his current contract.

Lovie is like a true father figure to Devin. I wouldn't be surprised if Urlacher & Jennings follow Lovie, as well.

If Urlacher and Jennings follow, that won't be good. I don't know if Emery's plan accounted for all the players die-hard loyal to Lovie. If enough players are upset, this could remove some key pieces from our roster. For the league leader in interceptions and face of our franchise to leave the team though, that really can't be good.

From a sentimental aspect, I want Urlacher to remain & eventually retire as a Bear. From a talent aspect, like others have already posted, Urlacher is about done physically. The thing that separated him in the past was his speed, which from my visual eye has decreased tremendously this season.

More than just from sentimentality or skill, if any players leave, it sets a bad atmosphere in the lockerroom with people uncommitted to the team and not happy with the current organization. If one or two players leave, it encourages more players to leave. Lovie kept the lockerroom always under control and he had a big connection with players, and with him gone, that could all fall apart.

Urlacher's no more than an average linebacker anymore. I've enjoyed him, but if he leaves it won't be all that troubling.
